- This is the first lecture in Common Grace and the Antithesis, taught by Dr. Lane G. Tipton.
This course is produced by Reformed Forum for Reformed Academy, and it is the fourth course in the Fellowship in Reformed Apologetics.
This course is designed to enable students to understand and express the reformed doctrine of common grace and the antithesis between the believer and the unbeliever in light of the theology of Cornelius Van Til. Topics include the historical background of the doctrine of common grace, the nature of sin in relation to common grace, the general witness of the Spirit to the truth of natural revelation, the concrete line of positive thinking, the Reformed philosophy of history, and fearless anthropomorphism.

Thank you I am listening to this and this is really good. I am not a Calvinist but I am learning about it and I think it is true. Thank you for your clarity and devotion to truth.
WOW! Very well presented...
This is really excellent, I am sensing a trend in Reformed Circles to emphasize common grace in such a way that it almost endorses a form of enabling or prevenient grace (for the sake of a tactical scholastic approach to taking on the culture war)
Yes! Good study.
This was so wonderful!
This was an excellent presentation. Thank you.
One quibble - I think it's an error to imply that eternity can be partitioned. You do this when you say "all of eternity," as if there can be a portion of eternity. Though not said here, it's a similar, common error of those who say "eternity past" or "eternity future,'" effectively asserting that eternity can be subdivided into time segments.
Related to this, there appears a stated concern regarding a wrong view of the antithesis between believers and unbelievers. Or a “neo-Calvinist notion of antithesis without the doctrine of common grace”….
Wyatt Graham of TGC references Grace in Common podcast when he notes (regarding Common Grace), “Connected to the doctrine of antithesis is the idea of common grace. Common grace corresponds to the doctrines of Providence and restraining grace. While an antithesis between believers and unbelievers exists, God commonly gives grace to the world by restraining evil and allowing for genuine virtue to exist.” - Antithesis without Common Grace Makes a Devil out of Our Neighbors
I think this may be a flaw in emphasis but conceived in response to TheoRecons.
I think Pastor Tipton prioritizes and highlights the main and most important features of common Grace as far as it’s limitations relating to the salvation of the soul.
This. Is. Wonderful! I love this explanation of common grace, it really gives ALL the glory to God for everything good.
Not to get controversial on this forum, but given how crazy the west is these days, I have come to realize that an extension of common grace is the gender binary, and heterosexual marriage. We see that with people abandoning God in the west, that they are turning to deviance in both these areas.
Why talk about Calvin's theology in one matter that came to be proposed with Kuyper and Bavinck? Are not this 2 theologians enough credible to substantiate the argument or it is needed the name of Calvin to seal a theory that is not developed by him?
Also related. I think this is an excellent point.
Natural Law and the Public Square
“ I believe this aspect of the Natural Law theory in view--that people can reason their way to actionable truths apart from God's special revelation--is too optimistic about the powers of unaided reason after the fall. The general revelation of God in nature and beneath conscience must be "carefully distinguished from the reaction that sinful man makes to this revelation" (Van Til). The apostle Paul says that unbelievers "suppress the truth" that they know (including the truth of their moral obligation to God), that they are, at root, "hostile to God" (Rom 8:7); that they have become "futile in their thinking" (Rom 1:21). They are, Paul says elsewhere, "darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart" (Eph 4:18).
These are hard words, no doubt. But they point to one side of what has been called the "antithesis" between belief and unbelief, a moral and spiritual conflict of basic commitments that touch all that Christians and non-Christians think about and discuss. According to this Scriptural principle, fallen man is slavishly committed to his own moral autonomy, while Christians are to view all things under the Lordship of Christ and the light of His Word. This means that, at the deepest level, there is no mutually acknowledged common ground between Christian and non-Christian. And this, it seems to me, leaves NL proponents calling for peace when there is no peace.
This is not to deny that by God's common grace, many unbelievers are immensely gifted and do morally upright things--often outstripping many Christians in good deeds. But such acts do not spring from an essentially unfallen rational ability, in principle, to discern and apply precepts of natural law. Rather, it is God who mercifully restrains the unbeliever's hostility against Him, so that the unbeliever is led, to some degree, to live inconsistently with his moral depravity. So common grace may facilitate a kind of formal agreement between the Christian and non-Christian. But common grace remains just that--grace. God gives it when and where He wills. You can't count on it as a foundation for public policy. This is a second reason why, I think, the NL theory I have in mind is a non-starter for programmatically advancing public morality.” - Carlton Wynne
This is not necessarily a critique but I can’t help but be reminded of Sproul’s Ligonier lectures except this format doesn’t have a visible audience.
Jesus Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and he raised from the dead on the third day(1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Jesus Christ, Delivers Us From The Wrath To Come(1 Thessalonians 1:10).
I think common grace is a myth. To me it seems like this is a doctrine invented out of necessity in order for a 2 kingdom structure to be maintained. Neither the scriptures nor the Westminster Confession know anything of another “non gracious“ covenant of grace. The testimony of the bible is that man is sold under sin a slave and all are condemned in Adam. It would be better understood as “common wrath” upon unregenerate who man is suppressing the truth about God in unrighteousness and storing up for himself wrath for the day of judgment cleverly disguised by God in what brother Tipton expresses to be “common blessings”. I love you brothers but your wrong and this should be resisted.

GRACE FOR WHO??
(Exodus 33:13-17) Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found GRACE in thy sight, shew me and consider that this NATION is THY PEOPLE and that I and thy people have found GRACE in thy sight so shall WE be SEPARATED, I and thy people, from ALL the people that are upon the face of the EARTH and the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found GRACE in my sight, and I know thee by name
(Zechariah 12:10) And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the SPIRIT of "GRACE" and of supplications

Yes - it doesn't change who the bible says "grace" is for - it's definitely for Israelites ONLY

Why would I entertain what tipton says?? the scriptures make it clear that any heathen attempting to teach or preach the word of God is a blasphemer

(Romans 3:1-2) What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto THEM were committed the oracles of God
(Amos 2:11) And I raised up of YOUR SONS for PROPHETS, and of YOUR young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye CHILDREN OF ISRAEL? saith the Lord
(Amos 3:7) Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his SERVANTS the prophets
(Deuteronomy 29:29) The SECRET things belong unto the Lord OUR God: but those things which are revealed belong UNTO US and to OUR children FOREVER
@@hadeswhereisyourvictory
Why attempt to divert from the topic - which is who "Grace" is for - as well as your recommendation that I believe some heathens twisting of scripture - I'll entertain your question anyway - all heathen that survive the return get new tight fitting ankle bracelets as it's written

CHRIST SPEAKING
(Revelation 2:26-27) And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power OVER THE NATIONS and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father
(Psalm 2:8-9) Ask of me, and I shall give thee the "HEATHEN" for thine INHERITANCE, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel
(Daniel 2:44) And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall NOT be left to OTHER PEOPLE but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
(Isaiah 54:3) ; and thy seed shall inherit the "GENTILES"
(ISAIAH 14:1-2) for the LORD will have mercy on Jacob and will yet choose ISRAEL and set them in their own land: and the "STRANGERS" shall be joined with them and the house of ISRAEL shall POSSESS them in the land of the Lord for "SERVANTS" and "HANDMAIDS" and they shall take them CAPTIVITIES whose CAPTIVES they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors
(Isaiah 60:11-12) 11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the "GENTILES" and that their kings may be brought For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted

@@_JazmynB Do the reprobate wicked become more or less guilty each new day they experience life and receive good gifts from God? There's your answer. A farmer may temporarily prolong the life of an animal by taking care of it's physical needs, separating it from other animals, calling the vet and making sure it has enough to eat. The purpose of the farmer is not to show "love" for the animal, but to fatten it up for the day of slaughter. Is there a reason why Satan is present in this world at this very moment, instead of being condemned to his eternal doom in hell?
The triune sovereign Calvinist potter God is so puny he can’t give *“saving grace”* to everybody so he only gives *“common grace”* to those he hated prior to Creation and intends to barbecue in Hell for his own good selfish glory and his own good sadistic pleasure; which doesn’t really do them much good, its kind of like sheltering and feeding a pig you intend to slaughter and eat, no love intended or given.
You are a immature man who denies clear bibical teaching. I will pray that you believe God's word, not your your own opinion.
Are you an atheist?

The entire doctrine of modern day Christianity regardless of denomination is the word "gentile" these "future" prophecies prove the doctrine false
