    I have lost track of the number of videos that I've watched on tomato trellising. This one makes the most sense for my set up. Thank you so much for this video. I can't wait to get it done!

    Around 06:30 you make a very good point - the plants that grow higher than this trellsi will not have enough time to produce edible fruits - I think you mean that. I do not live in an all year round warm area. I will not feel bad about chopping off the plants that get too big anymore.

      Depending on the size of your bed(s). 4 or 5 conduit pipes, 2 elbows, a PVC "T" if needed, and some nylon cord. $20 - $30?

    • @keithwilkes7629

      If you don't use those wood pieces to support the posts, the weight of the plants will pull them down into the ground, lowering the rack and defeating the purpose. Thanks for watching.

    I set up the same way, Only thing I do different is I don't cut the 10ft horizontal pipe. I slip the PVC T over it, slide to 5ft the drive a tex screw through the PVC into the pipe from the side and another on the vertical section. Keeps the pipe and PVC T moving side to side.

    I can tell by the beautiful trees you have there you're in the north but I'm in the Southwest my problem is my plants will grow probably 10 or 12 ft long by the time the first Frost comes in October what do I do with the excess 6 or so feet after the plant reaches the top of the trellis thanks ahead for responding

    • @keithwilkes7629
      @keithwilkes7629  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A longer growing season. What a problem to have. Maybe make the trellis taller (8' ?) and use a step stool. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

    • @rachellewaddle8744
      @rachellewaddle8744 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people have two rows of these trellises next to each other, then they use tomato hooks. When the tomatoes get to the top of the trellis, unwind some of the string on the tomato hook and move it over about 1 foot in a clockwise direction (you'll have to move all the other plants also to make room). You can also prune all the leaves below the last fruiting set. Then, towards the end of the growing season, you have a bunch of tomato plants leaning clockwise diagonally around your trellises.

    Beautiful yard you have there. I was wondering how you would address all the extra growth from indeterminates but you answered that quite well. Which state are you growing in . . . Michigan? Have you ever tried the plastic clips on your string to support your plants?

  • @tamboliyatamboliya2815
    @tamboliyatamboliya2815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm worried the twine would be too abrasive and would scratch my plants as the slide up it when growing or when brushing against it when windy. This I fear would cause wounds/damage from the scratches. This in turn would make it more susceptible to diseases and pests. Cotton string would be softer but fear it'd become mildewy/moldy from retaining water and be too heavy from the water weight. What would be the safest string/twine/tape, etc. to use then? Help!

    • @keithwilkes7629
      @keithwilkes7629  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't have a problem with damage from the twine or cord. The twine only lasted 1 season though. The cord holds up much better. I've gone 3 years so far with cord. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, Keith, great video. I followed your idea and already bought all the material. Just before building the trellis, I came across some warning that concrete rebar can contain small amount of lead or other heavy metal, which is not great for veggie garden. Do you have any comments on this?
    I'm considering avoiding the rebar, and just hammering the 1/2" electric conduit into soil, say 1-2 ft deep, and secure it at the ground level (strap it to garden bed frame). Would that work? As I understood, these conduits are galvanized steel, so won't rust in soil, and perhaps an alternative to rebar.
    Many thanks.

    • @keithwilkes7629
      @keithwilkes7629  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haven't heard that about rebar. I'm not concerned. As for attaching the posts to the bed, that would work. Just make sure they are tight enough that the posts don't slide down into the ground from the weight of the plants. Thanks for watching.
