- Thinking about starting (or adding to) a collection of vintage Apple Macintosh computers? In this video I talk about some of the things to look for when evaluating a machine for purchase, what to expect after you get it home, and give a quick demo of the most basic maintenance that is required to keep your new Mac running for many years!

Great video, new sub - i dig this topic that many retro tubers miss. Thanks!
Definitely useful, even if we aren't starting a collection. Good for anyone who might be replacing capacitors on even non-mac items and some safety measures that go with it.
Is there are reason you didn't use tantalum caps?
Sure, easy question! That's what I had on hand! The more difficult question is should a person use electrolytics or tantalums when doing a recap - and depending on who you ask you are likely to get a different answer. Some people will say the boards were designed for electrolytic caps and that's what you should use, while others will note that in 20-25 years replacements might start leaking (or maybe they are made better now and won't?). When tantalums fail (and they do fail), they will typically fail short - which is usually not a problem as the power supplies typically have short detection and will turn off - but there is still risk of shorting some IC somewhere and damaging it - so maybe this isn't a good choice either.
So what do I do? I mix it up, I've used tantalums and eletrolytics randomly on my recaps, even mixing them together sometimes (which some people will also tell you not to do) - but I would say mostly I have been sticking with the electrolytics and I don't really have a good reason one way or the other for doing that.
