It's how you feel as the years advance that truly matters. It is as if the ageing process is some sort of test? Like some sort of reminder of mortality? Some sort of preparation? Which enables us to enjoy the present moment more and more...

I get it ...I am 68 and have never looked better in all my life because of working out constantly, and the way I dress I constantly get compliments~I do see the dissolution of the body happening; the decaying form, as Eckhart says; the sagging skin on my face, the sagging skin all over is actually making me become more present. When I first realized this after retiring two years ago, I panicked to the point of constant suffering. Now I believe I understand.

    • @CitrusSimon

Thank you for that. Sounds like a fearful thought will arise that will desire to be controlled, just to attempt to get rid of the fear, but if this thought is witnessed, then the choice to be calm, focused, and centred becomes more attractive! However...
Inner peace is not the absence of conflict, nor the absence of challenge, but rather the capacity to be with what is, in each moment, without prejudice or judgement.

@@obscurum6 It is the ego you are talking about. And yes, it does all those things you mentioned. This is just one reason, if not the best reason to practice being aware of the present moment, and witnessing thoughts, thus with experience, gaining inner awareness of oneself, and even though thoughts may still arise, they are not identified with, which means they do not get projected onto oneself or others.
Most of us, myself included, are still in recovery from identifying with the ego. It is the recovery that unites us.

Definitely. I was surprised he didn’t mention social media and the role that plays with identity and ego; another extension of form identity, just like clothing but even stronger.. “look at me, over here. This is me.” Right down the memes people share; not just selfies and rants.
I tried to keep my Facebook up after my ego death but I noticed how much social media fanned the embers that were left, even with minimal posting. Every Like that people receive on there is fuel to the hungry fire that is the ego.

Life is just an internal mental story 99% of the time, its possible to stop the stories by staying in the present moment and that is a good place to visit sometimes but a pretty boring place to live on a permanent basis in my opinion. Reality is what is happening right here right now and while of course there are facts about the past but when we think of the past it seldom stops at that one fact of what actually genuinely happened at that one moment in time, before we realise it our mind is off creating a story about that one moment and taking our attention and happiness with it. If we accept that 99% of our mental awareness and attention is just a story then we have a choice and decision to make, we either listen to our minds stories which tend to be negative fearful and anxious or we use our imagination ourselves to create stories we enjoy and makes us happy 😊. Its absolutely irrelevant whether we listen to our minds stories or create our own as either way its just a story and none of it is real, and as long as we remember none of its real we are free to choose a mind made horror story or our very own happy fictional fantasy story of our own choosing? People say your wasting your life living in a fantasy world and prefer to be more grounded, but in truth are they themselves not living in a fantasy horror story of worry fear and anxiety produced by their minds rather than themselves? Our worries about the future aren't real they are just the mind imagining the worse case scenario and are no more real than us deliberately imagining ourselves in a wonderful place having a wonderful time. Enjoy your mind and use it for happiness, rather than be used by it for unhappiness, fear, worry and misery 🙏😊👍❤️

I admire Eckhart and consider him the most important spiritual teacher alive today. But this is the only point on which I disagree with him. All beliefs are relative and aging is one of them. We cannot necessarily enjoy having a pleasant physical appearance due to the egoic fact of comparing ourselves with others to feel superior. Personally, I've been practicing bodybuilding for more than 30 years and I can't even imagine that situation.
I do it for the pleasure of creating and inspired purely from the connection with aesthetics. This enthusiasm inspires me to keep moving forward, and continue to increase my level of consciousness.
By the way, I am fully aware that I am not a body, (nor what I think or feel).

What if your body is making you miserable not because you identify with it but because it is suffering from a chronic condition which influences all parts of your life and you are suffering from its consequences in the present moment, every second of the day. What would you recommend in this case? I mean, to simply dis-identify with the body doesn't make the pain go away. Helpful advice on chronic illness / pain seems hard to find in the spiritual quarter. Any recommendations would be very welcome ☺️

@@essiees3151 i Could say that starting with Abrahm hicks made Eckhart tolle's teachings simpler to understand.
I find his to be much more practical and provides a readily available method (withdrawing from thinking at any time). Abraham teaches the law of attraction and also encourages creation and "being one with the universe", both through accepting what is and having positive thoughts.
Personally, it can be difficult, frustrating and mentally draining to constantly look for positive aspects on the various areas of life.. Finanances, relationships, possession etc. Just feels like lying to oneself.
So having no thought and blending in makes more sense. The feeling is profound.
Abraham does often say though that, "having no thought is better than negative thought" and that "You attract what you think whether you like it or not" or "You are the creator of your own reality".
Too bad i cant whittle down all of it in these comments but yeah. These teachings do converge at some points. For example, that we are one with all that is or that we vibrate at certain frequences.
Do delve deeper in to Abraham Hicks' Teaching. 'They' Present some really intersting concepts/truths that are truly worth the time in my opinion.

When it comes to identity and gender with transgender people - Embodying consciously our gender for the first time can feel like dying of the false self that wants to defend itself, as that would probably make life easier, but inauthentic. Gender stands for the true feeling and self expression and recognition of one's body. It's an unblocking of the intereference from the mind, to be free to be ourselves the way we are. Gender is not an identity in an of itsel at that pointf, it is the way in which we are free of an identity in the mind to hide behind. It becomes an identity when we cling to it, then it can become a form identity again, perpetuating a vicious cycle. I want Mr.Eckhart Tolle to understand the subtle difference in what is actually happening in the consciousness of many trans gender people.Gender is a free pass to be true to our higher selves.

The body is a flux, like a river - continuously changing, moving. It has nothing of the eternal in it. Each moment the body is changing. In fact, the body is dying every moment. It is not that after seventy years suddenly one day you die. The body dies every day. Death continues for seventy years; it is a process.
Death is not an event; it is a long process. By and by, by and by, the body comes to a point where it cannot hold itself. It disintegrates. If you are identified with the body, of course the fear will be constantly there that death is approaching. You can live, but you can live only in fear. And what type of life is possible when one’s foundations are constantly shaking and one is sitting on a volcano and death is possible any moment?
    The second layer: the mind
Then there is a second layer within you: that of the mind - which is even more temporal and more fleeting than the body. Mind is also continuously disintegrating. Mind is the inner part of the body and the body is the outer part of the mind. These are not two things. Mind and body is not a right expression. The right expression is mind-body. You are psychosomatic. Not that the body exists and the mind exists. The body is the gross mind, and the mind is the subtle body… aspects of the same coin - one outer, the second inner.
…Real life is beyond both body and mind. You are in the body, you are in the mind, but you are neither. The body is your outer shell, the mind is your inner shell, but you are beyond both. This insight is the beginning of real life. How to start this insight? That’s what meditation is all about.
    Moving beyond sickness and health….
Start witnessing. Sometimes the body is healthy; sometimes the body is ill. Watch, just watch, and suddenly you will have a sense of a totally different quality of being. You are not the body. The body is ill, of course, but you are not ill. The body is healthy, but it has nothing to do with you. You are a witness, a watcher on the hills… far beyond. Of course, tethered to the body, but not identified with the body; rooted in the body, but always beyond and transcending.
The first meditation is to separate yourself from the body. And by and by, when you become more acute in your observation of the body, start observing the thoughts that continuously go on within your mind. But first watch the body; because it is gross it can be observed more easily and will not need much awareness. Once you become attuned, then start watching the mind. Whatsoever can be watched becomes separate from you. Whatsoever you can witness, you are not it. You are the witnessing consciousness. The witnessed is the object; you are the subjectivity.
The body, and the mind also, remain far away when you become a witness. Suddenly you are there - with no body and no mind… a pure consciousness, just simple sheer purity, innocence, a mirror. In this innocence, for the first time you know who you are. In this purity, for the first time existence becomes life. For the first time you are. Before it, you were simply asleep, dreaming; now you are. And when you are, then there is no death. Then you know that you will be witnessing your death also.
One who has become capable of witnessing life has become capable of witnessing death…because death is not the end of life; it is the very culmination of it. It is the very pinnacle of it. Life comes to its peak in death."

If the 'I' thought is a severe and enduring mental illness, it is easy for the ego to hide this by just saying the word 'ego'
The word 'ego' does not really sound that bad, a person can live with that. But a severe and enduring mental illness, well, that is something serious, and a person would desire to make a recovery from that. So, maybe we are all in recovery in various degrees?

    • @CitrusSimon

@Pharisee Spotter Profound! You did not use the word 'I' Thats beautiful. Thank you xx
Yes, Recovery. The medicine is being present, and with practice (application) we feel a relief that we no longer identify with the constant thought stream that results in the unconscious severe and enduring mental illness, that is considered normal.
Our recovery's unite us. Eckhart is a wonderful guide xx

      Very painful condition.
Maybe you can keep looking on different videos by him and others , I think Rupert Spira has some good meditations etc that may suit you, or help you out.
Also some excellent physios and chiropractors on youtube who offer movement excersises that at least keep the rest of the body going a bit.
The pain you are talking about can be debilitating to the body, as I imagine you know all too well ...I hope you can find something that can suit you that will recover spinal health. I truly wish you well. Truly.
I believe Ekhart here is simply explaining that we can all get caught up in ' conditions' of the body, thinking that they are 'Us', when we all are the beingness prior to form.
      Take care, and good luck.😊

i suffer from a weird form of form-identity: but then, so, obviously do many, many other people and some are not so obvious at-first-glance..
not only do we feel special in many instances, but we might sound that way too, but it's all very subjective and transit'ry, isn't it...
but when it's-all-done, then perhaps we can have a good laugh, or maybe even better than that, yeah? no, it may not be very laughable yet, but even this is a very good sign, it means we're now gettin' somewhere, or somethin' like that, yeah? we've certainly got time, even now

Ha! The ego is amusing when it is witnessed. The concepts and ideas it thinks up can be quite astonishing. To have moments when we witness this happening within ourselves is hilarious! The ego may try to get in the back door when this happens and say "You are mad Citrus Simon" in a tone of voice that is attempting to sound real and authentic, which can cause infectious laughter in esoteric circles of people doing inner work!
