    These are some ridiculous books. Words cannot express how crazy some of this all is, but I gave it a shot.
    To answer what I'm sure people will be asking in the comments, yes, the art in these books is terrible. Matt Walsh's book in particular is bad, though that may be, in part, because the pdf version is shoddily put together. The hard copy isn't much better though, and I couldn't be bothered tracking down a physical copy of the thing.

      A Chikd could never claim to be Trans, cause no sane Parent would take there Child seriously. The Parents decide for the Child, the Child has no integrity.
      The Idea of the Childrensbook was, how Parents, or Activists push an Agenda on others, and force Children into Roles they not signed up whit.
      His Book whit his own Words is for the Parents, not the Child. Cause he doesnt think a Parent would respect there Child, and let them decide on there own.

    I've been part of a writer's circle for children's authors for many years. Fun fact: the most common piece of advice that's passed around is "the child protagonist must resolve the conflict." Kids usually identify with the protagonist of a story (that's what a protagonist is for), and child protagonists can model effective problem-solving and positive behavior. We spend a lot of time looking at our stories from a child's perspective and considering how a developing mind would receive certain story elements.
    I can't help but notice that each of these examples features passive child characters whose conflicts are resolved by doing exactly what author-insert adults tell them. The kids don't solve problems; they obey orders.
    Not only have these "authors" not bothered to learn how kids' fiction works, I'm pretty sure they've never test-read these books to actual children (a thing we also do). Almost like they don't consider the possibility that kids are people...🙄

      Johnny the Walrus sadly was read to younger kids in FL tho only after release but naturally their parents agreed/wanted this so the kids were primed to lean Conservative already. Even so tho, they barely listened as the lesson isn't for them and the one who was the most vocal started wrestling some other kid, pure chaos lol.
      Also thank you for the work you do. Children's books really are an important aspect of their lives and it's such a shame going from a wholesome classic of "Goodnight Moon" that I still have fond memories of to "Why everyone needs an AR-15".

      That's what it comes down to. Conservatives don't think children are capable of independent thought. They believe children are little automatons, and the job of adults is to insert the "correct ideas" into their brains.

    • @antoinetteherrera9026
      @antoinetteherrera9026 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's because, to conservatives, especially those on the Religious Right, kids are property that must be subdued and dominated until they are old enough to pass their trauma onto the next generation. I don't know if Matt Walsh ever read the work of Michael Pearl, but his view of children is not so far from Pearl's view: that they're sinful little rebels, not to be trusted at all. (Seriously, Google To Train Up a Child if you have a strong stomach. It's a horror show of a read.)

      You can't be serious... this is obviously not a kids book, no one with even half a mind thinks that. The protagonist is the mother, she is the one learning the lesson in the end. It's political satire, even the crappy drawings are part of the satirization. How can this fly over so many peoples' heads. The message is something along the lines of "don't throw your kid from a skyscraper only because it pretends to be superman, disregard others that try to tell you that you are a bigot for not confusing pretend play for an identity". I'm not religious, but Jesus help us if people are this oblivious...

    I just had a seriously great idea.
    Re-write Johnny the Walrus to be about a literal walrus who lives in a human society, and how he has to adapt to a world not built for him. I think it would really help kids understand how to see things from different perspectives.
    "Johnny wants to go shopping, but there is just one BIG issue! Johnny can't fit through the front door anymore! He just grew too big to fit. The shopkeeper and Johnny are great friends! The shopkeeper tries many ways to help Johnny get into the store. He tried pushing and pulling, but no matter how hard he tried, he just wouldn't fit. Sadly, Johnny had to go home with nothing to buy. That night, the shopkeeper had an idea. He built a new door. It was big enough for Johnny to fit. The next day, Johnny visited the store once again, surprised about the new door. Other customers complained that the door was too big. Some demanded that the store goes back to using the old door. But there was nothing wrong with the new door. It can fit everyone."
    "Many people seem scared of change, it's a problem in our modern world. But don't worry! Their fear will calm eventually, they just need to hear what's good about the change from the right voice. Maybe that voice is yours?"
    Please note that I am really exhausted as of writing this, I can barely keep my eyes open. Please don't be too critical of my work if there are any mistakes, I wrote this with good intentions.

      However, I don't really like it when books make it seem out of the ordinary or make an effort to pint it out. The series called "The Popularity Papers" for example does it perfectly, one of the twom protagonists is adopted and has gay dads, however it's never mentioned that they are gay or even married if I recall correctly. The girl calls hem Dad and Daddy and that's about it. It's not shown as something out of the ordinary. I took a class on writing children's books, and Matt Walsh's book does everything that class told me not to do. The biggest lesson we learned is that the main character should have agency. The problem should always be solved by them. Not by their parents, not by some outside force, not by the author's self-insert, but by the character themselves. This encourages the children to make their own decisions, and trust their own feelings. The fact that his book doesn't do that tells you a lot about how he views children.

  • @liimlsan3
    @liimlsan3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    Inside perspective: "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories" isn't really in this category. James Finn Garner has been on the left all his life.
    He was making fun, not of political correctness, but of the early-1990s spate of shallow politically correct language pasted in stories whose tropes weren't substantially deconstructed. "If you were really politically correct, you wouldn't say 'womyn' but still have the huntsman rescue the grandma from the wolf. She would jump out and call out the tropes."
    It's not a bitter right-wing critique against overreaching wokeness. It's a playful left-wing critique-ad-absurdum against underreaching fauxkeness.
    Several times, he was invited to right-wing news shows to interview on this totally right-wing bestselling book, and he'd be so sarcastic the host would break composure and laugh, until they didn't notice he wasn't actually agreeing with them. It was a delicate dance, but it may not have made the bestseller list without that plausible deniability for a right wing audience. A later book, "Recut Madness: Favorite Movies Retold For Your Partisan Pleasure" ("He is Spartacus! And we've got the birth certificate to prove it!") whose centerpiece was a scathing "Wizard of Dubya" sold like six hundred copies. Even the Cowardly Donkey singing "If I Only Had A Spine" didn't fool anyone; his critique came from left-of-Dem.
    So yeah. P.C.B.S. (yes, the acronym was part of the joke) was responding to a cultural milieu that no longer exists. It's still popular in the parts of Europe where the right wing still dodges Poe's law; his latest works (the "Rex Koko, Private Clown" series) are in circus-themed noir detective fiction. It has a longer shelf life, and no competition.
    I just can't lump him with all the authors who don't believe in trans kids. Since one of his daughters is trans, and he's been nothing but supportive of us both.
    Source: I'm his daughter.

      @@KangMinseok I know this wasn’t intended for me, but I just wanted to clarify some stuff. While a lot of people may say gender is a social construct, that’s not exactly true. Gender roles and how gender fits into a broader society and culture is a social construct. However gender itself is neurobiological. Gender is determined by the brain. For example, cisgender men and women have different neurological pathways in their brains. Trans individuals have the neurological pathways of the gender they identify with, and not the ones corresponding to their sex assigned at birth. One study (of many) that demonstrates this is called “Male-to-female transsexuals have female neuron numbers in a limbic nucleus”
      This also explains the existence of non binary individuals as well as neurological pathways are on a spectrum and don’t neatly fit into a binary.

    • @KangMinseok
      @KangMinseok ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IntoTheForest No. Gender IS all the social aspects, sex IS all the biological aspects - that's how these terms have been defined, that's how we should use them, else communication isn't even possible between us - You even state it yourself, these neurobiological findings are sex, not gender. Trans sex is the correct terminology here, you are using it yourself. If it were just a question of trans sex, the whole matter could be much more scientifically streamlined - anyone claiming to be trans would need to get a proper brain scan and diagnosis, like with any other medical condition - but that's not the problem here now, is it? It's that the World Health Organization etc. are promoting the idea that trans gender is a non-medical disorder social trans which is determined by an individual's self-conviction (as if gender and gender identity are the same thing). It's simply nonsense. What you describe is clearly a medical condition and therefore not based in a social construct - ergo it is not that which the WHO talks about when they use the word "trans gender", and it's also not what the large majority of gender studies papers talks about (there the definition of "gender' is in actuality just a spectrum of socially constructed femininity and masculinity, which has little to do with biology).

Library day was my favorite day of the week at school, I loved visiting the public library (where I now work), the scholastic book fair was a highlight of the year, going to a book store was as exciting as going to a toy store. I got to devour Calvin & Hobbes comics, Roald Dahl classics, guides to monsters & fantasy creatures around the world, and nonfiction books about my favorite animals all in one fell swoop. The parents who force these kinds of books onto their kids don’t want that for their kids. They don’t really want them to be curious and explorative. @@galacticrainestorm8546 which is not a shitty analogy at all since in nature we do not find a definitive definition for "species" - it's an imperfect concept we humans use to make talking about the variety of life easier. In reality though, what separates a man from a woman and a human from a walrus is the same - genetic differences. The only real difference is in the total number, not in the nature of the differences. That's what makes the analogy valid - if we can make an excuse for the differences between male and female, there is no logical barrier for us not to make an excuse for the differences between humans and other animals. 1 + 2 = 5 is not more or less wrong than 3 + 6 = 20, only because the latter has higher numbers in it, if you understand this less-than-ideal analogy. Obviously I expect any reader to now jump up and shout "but male and female are not the same as man and woman", to which my reply is: "man" and "woman" are not considered genders by the modern definition of "gender" anymore, read the gender definition of the World Health Organization, it may open your eyes (if not, feel free to come back and I'll explain it).

    I dispute that “gay parents” kids books are left wing. The “A is for Activist”, sure, we can call that left wing (haven’t read it - activism obviously isn’t inherently left wing but ngl, it looks pretty leftist). But the right wing kids books are clearly ideological whereas the ones that are just like “these people exist and that’s okay” I don’t agree with the premise that they’re left wing and I think the notion that they are is just an excuse for propagandists to write books that say “these people exist, but they shouldn’t, and it’s not okay” which to me is a much more ideological point to start from.

But that's a moral story for the parent so the kid learns nothing and not just that the parent learns nothing, as the only reason you would buy this book is that you agree with the moral of the story. My suggestion for an over-the-top right-wing book: The story of a town fighting big government. And it goes like this:
      There was a town of Statesville, a town of industry and wealth. The people of Statesville worked hard in their farms and their factories, and the town grew and grew.
      One day a little man, a petty spiteful man came to visit. "I'm from the Government," he said, "And we have found a rare species on your land. The lesser dotted sparkle-warbler."
      The people of Statesville were proud to have this rare bird, and they welcomed the bird-spotters - but then man from the government returned.
      "You cannot build more factories," he said. "For that land is home to the sparkle-warbler."
      "You cannot farm that land," he said, "For the trees there are food for the warbler."
      "In fact," he said, "I am going to need to close some of your factories down, because their waste is poisoning the warblers."
      The people of Statesville saw the ruin this would bring, and so they formed a great plan. While the man was away, they assembled, and they searched the land around with guns and nets.
      They shot and they splatted, they poisoned and they crushed, they set fire to the forests, and in a week every single lesser-spotted sparkle-warbler lay shot and and burned and dead.
      And the man from the government left, and was never seen again.
