I’m not a military pilot but I’ve been flying 49 years. Mostly corporate jets. Boss just said it really well, you can read manuals, listen to instructors all day long but pilots are visual spacial individuals. The more we do it and see it, the better we become.
Wonderful interview! Great to hear this “exit” interview and also see the entry onto the team with the documentary. Additionally, the San Diego Air and Space Museum is an awesome place to visit and a nice backdrop of the interview. Thank you for all involved with putting this together.
It's impossible for me to express how much I like this interview! Thanks. (My story in another universe. Extremely poor eyesight kept me out of military aviation.)
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are great and always good to see in a performance on the ground and in the air and one of my favorite parts is meeting and taking photos of the pilots and the maintenance crews,I remember a few airshows during a private event,I had the opportunity to actually talk with the Blue Angel pilots and the rest of the team,There was so much information I learned, They are totally kool,Thanks for sharing this with the audience and I enjoyed this very much 🇺🇸.
Amazing, just amazing. I’ve been going to see the Angels every summer for the last,,,,25 years or so? I’m a huge fan! Jones Beach, NY, Quonset Point, Rhode Island and at their home base in Pensacola, Florida. Thunderbirds too.
That was a fantastic interview!!!! Bravo for the poignant and insightful questions that revealed information I didn't expect to hear. Seriously, well done sir!!! This interview demonstrates how humble Blue Angel pilots must be and Boss Armatas epitomizes that trait. As a Pensacola local that watches practically every local practice and listens in on the radio calls, this interview cemented my opinion of the exemplary professionalism of Boss Armatas. Thanks for doing this interview. Semper Fi Captain!!
I got to meet him in one of my local towns of vidalia Ga in his final year and got an autograph from him and hes a great person and he was an amazing boss! Thank you for the interview with him, i loved listening to it
I first saw the Blues at age 12 at Cherry Pt. MCAS, now 72 years old, I must admit the thrill is still there thanks to aviators like Captain Armatas. A lineage of excellence!
Aww dang! Great BOSS! I miss each and every one of them when they leave. What great interview questions and answers! Thank you! Edit: I will miss his voice! Awesome leader as they all were!
@ Absolutely agree! Each and EVERY BLUE ANGEL is and, was a blessing. I’m old and watched both the Thunderbirds AND Blue Angels fly TOGETHER. BOTH TEAMS ARE AWESOME PERIOD.
Great interview! I got to meet Boss Armatas last spring at El Centro. He’s a great guy and flight leader! I wish the best to all of them in their future endeavors!
Fantastic Interview Evan!! I absolutely loved watching him during the two years he was Boss for the Blue Angels. I will definitely miss him and I look forward to what CDR Bryan has in store for the 2025 team!!!! 👍🏻
Boss is ready, T-Bar, Dog, Ziggy, Red Bush will forever be embedded in my brain as a Frontman. Hands down the best Navy experience in my 30 years on active duty.
I'm a retired Naval Aviator, was never good enough to be a Blue Angel, but I've had friends, two specifically who became Blues. From all I've heard, this former BA Skipper was a rock solid leader.
As always, great interview, Ryan. I have one question and I figure you’d be the guy to ask: Does the incoming Boss have any input on the selection of team members they’ll be flying with or are they all selected at the same time? Keep up the excellent work.
I’ll show all these guys how to fly these jets . . . . . :) Then I woke up ! A complete dream for most of us but some are born to live their wildest dreams ! The Blue Angels . . . It is so much more than just the incredible shows and the jets. Their service in just inspiring others alone can not even be measured . God bless our United States of America ! God bless our Blue Angels and may his Angels always keep watch
This was great and I would like to know if you have a chance to interview Amanda Lee. Being a woman and one of the first few In the Merchant Marines, it made me happy to see the videos I saw with Amanda in them.

What an amazing interview! I have been a massive admirer of Boss Armatas! Btw what's Boss Armatas' new billet posting post command of the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron?
Yes Boss mentions this towards the end of the interview in response to the question about his favorite jet. All of the Blue jets have passed their functional fleet life.
"She was the first woman jet demo pilot" makes it sound as if she was the first ever across services or militaries. She may be the first Blue Angel, but the Thunderbirds and Snowbirds have had female pilots before in purely the North American context. Not sure of the European teams, but it wouldn't surprise me there either.
Yes. In an effort to keep the question straightforward, I left out that context by mistake. It happens. There was a lot going on. :) Hopefully the viewers can fill in the gaps. Thanks for calling this out.
No one is saying women can't do it or are not capable. Amanda graciously proved that. But there is NO WAY IN HELL one can tell me that 6 men, in a 70-year fraternity, unanimously voted in a female without pressure from the higher-up Brass.
Boss has been the best Commanding Officer I've ever had. He made my time on the team extremely fun!

Oh my, just the usual EXCELLENT level of both journalism and video craft we have come to expect. Great work Evan!
TWO tries to get into the Naval Academy and here he was Blue Angels boss! This should encourage every kid!

It's impossible for me to express how much I like this interview! Thanks. (My story in another universe. Extremely poor eyesight kept me out of military aviation.)
Thanks for watching!
That was a fun listen. I’m grateful to live in the cradle of naval aviation and to experience the Blues regularly with my kids.

Great question about Alex’s favorite jet. I think he had a very solid career experience as “The Boss”
Thanks for watching! El Diablo is a great nickname for that jet!

Great interview and you asked questions I think we all wanted to know about. What is boss doing now?
Like Top Gun… It’s classified… 😂
No mention of Boss Armatas plans or next assignment? Did he retire?
Are the Super Hornets used by the Blue Angels throw aways from active service?
Yes Boss mentions this towards the end of the interview in response to the question about his favorite jet.
All of the Blue jets have passed their functional fleet life.
Last flight............................. a tough day.
I think he was on that PBS Carrier documentary from 2005 no ?
Oh was he? Would love to see that
He’s not old enough……
Do you get to keep your jumpsuit once you are finished?
They’re custom fit for each pilot so I don’t see why they wouldn’t. I know they get to keep their helmets. Thanks for watching!
Did the Blues change the tension spring on the stick for Amanda's jet?
Only 1 year? I thought tour was 2 years?
Boss was the Blue Angels CO for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
@kevinmadore1794 k. I thought host said 1 year. Thanks
