These interviews with Bill Moyers speaking to Joseph Campbell are marvelous. He knows more about mythologies from so many of the earth's cultures including indigenous people. His insights based on his many years of study, are treasures.
I didn't learn about comsciouness through this man. I learned consciouness through nirvapak shamadhi. I was in mediation and I generated so much love that it shot up I to my mind and I entered an altered state of cosncioiness. When I looked around me everything was filled with this little lights and the little lights were everywhere . In the water and in the air. And the light said "hi" and I knew right here that everything was consciouness or that everything is conscious. I guess everyone learns different. Some ppl learn on there own some ppl learn though other ppl. I always wanted my own personal experince with God so i dont not like to when someone else is teaching me. I have to become my own god-realized person .

Some cultures understood this centuries ago. Native Americans understood their relationship with nature and the Earth….and the responsibility that came with it.
Interesting that he talked about “the bile knowing it has something to work on” back then. I thought the scientists only recently confirmed that the gut is a type of “second brain” for the human body. Thus, it appears he was ahead of his time in that respect.
You should read his seminal work, The Hero With A Thousand Faces, from 1950. Not only ahead of his time, but a man for his time. I also devoured his Masks of God series.

How old was he when he wrote it? EDIT: I see he wrote it at 45. So I guessed fairly right. I thought you meant his seminal university work at like late twenties, or veeeery early thirties.
