    1955 Universal Geneve & 1959 Zenith Pilot watch. I rate these two the very best of your collection. I remember my first watch as a very young lad given to me by my dad. It was a seventeen jewel manual wind with acrylic crystal. I was 8 years old at the time and it was 1965. A family friend visited us from time to time and he showed me his watch and I pointed out that his watch did not have a ticking seconds hand. He was wearing an electric Bulova with a smooth seconds hand. I was impressed but had no comprehension how it worked. He was very proud of his purchase. These days I have a dozen watches three of which have automatic mechanical movements and the remainder are all quartz. My oldest quartz was given to me in 1978 by my father for my 21st birthday, a Seiko with a dark blue dial. I still own this watch and wear it occasionally. I will never part with it. I have no qualm about owning quartz movements as they almost never require servicing and they are accurate to with a few seconds a month. My latest acquisition is a dive watch and it is the only dive watch I own. It has a full loom and loses about 2 seconds a week.

      They are all good if you ask me , the Universal Polerouter is on the list of many watch collectors , especially the versions with a micro Rotor .

    Seiko also has a wide selection of vintage time pieces with solid movements, they can be found in great condition too at very reasonable prices.

      No doubt about it. These are just 9 of many brands out there. I do prefer to create a video with the actual watch on hand.

    It seems that vintage watches while smaller also had longer lugs giving the watches a more graceful, refined presence. I’m a fan.

    I am a 78 year old watch and other stuff collector and started collecting old mechanical watches in 1968. My collection is close to 1000 old watches of all the brands you show in this video plus hundreds more. I have all of the old Illinois collectabe models from the 1930s. I have sold, traded and given more watches away than I can count over the years. I still collect and just purchased a 1960s Breitling Navitimer yesterday, Thursday, March 28th 2024. I was also a pilot before my health went a little bad and I can't pass the physical anymore. So I have multiple pilot watches as well as diver watches, dress watches and all kinds of sport type wqtches. All of my collection is mechanical movements. I will not place a quartz watch in my hand much less put one on my wrist! I find you video very entertaining and informative. Hence I have subscribed, liked and selected All of your upcoming videos. Keep up the good work young man. By the way, I normally dislike music in videos however the type you publish means at least you have good taste in music as well as watches.

      Wow. Thank you for sharing, I can just imagine how impressive your collection must be. I am sorry about your pilot test result. I do wish you many years of good health.
      If only we were next-door neighbours, I would ask to visit your home for an interview and film your collection for my “We Speak Time” series on this channel.
      I greatly appreciated your kind words and subscribed to my channel. :)

      Respect Sir. You are a role model. 1000 watches, WOW. I just got into watch collecting in January 2024 and currently have around 50. But I will be gifting the ones I am not into any more. I started the hobby with Chinese watches now I have realized my passion is for Jeweled hand winding watches from 1920s-1970s . Wear your watches in good health

    Thank you for sharing these vintage watches. I really appreciate the quality of the video as well as the watches. It’s clear you really gravitate towards exceptionally clean, Swiss, stainless steel, round, automatic, water resistant watches with silver dials, from the 1950s-1960s. You have a few that exceptions to each of those characteristics but it’s easy to see your preferences. Your descriptions are spot on giving the precise dimensions, caliber, year of production, water resistance, and usually one or two things that make each watch special. A format that appeals to beginner and advanced collectors alike. While the UG Polerouter is my favorite I can appreciate all of them. I know that it is typically reccomended that people specialize in their watch collecting, I find it much more enjoyable for myself to have a diverse collection with specialized subgroups within a larger collection. For example, I have wrist and pocket watches, the pocket watches range from a 1777 Fusee chain drive to 1920-30s American Railroad models to a 1950s Patek minute repeater, and even a rare 1960s 18k Eterna automatic golf pocketwatch. My wrist watch collection is equally diverse with wide lug WWI era models from the late 1910s all the way up to a few nice Swiss complicated watches from the early 2000s like a JLC Master Geographic and a Omega Speedmaster Broadarrow. But my favorite watches fall into three categories, 1920-40s oversized rectangular watches, 1930-70 Chronographs, and 1950s-1970s Sport models. I also appreciate yellow and rose gold in addition to stainless steel. I especially gravitate towards dials that are black or have multi-color elements. I have plenty with plain silver dials but seek out dials that are more special like porcelain, black/gilt, rose gold, etc. I’ve been collecting for 25 years am lucky to have amassed some fantastic watches. Keep up your learning and collecting with a consideration to the idea of branching out a bit more in what you buy. You never truly know what you will discover that truly catches your fancy until you experience it so don’t be afraid to look beyond the styles you are comfortable with. One great part about buying vintage is you can always sell them on without losing much if anything and you can often experience ownership of some great watches for free or even make a little profit if you buy them right.

    Oh, if only we could return to the 33 to 36mm cased watches !
    They definitely got it right in the 1940s to mid '60s.
    Or am I the only person fed up with today's overly large offerings ?

    cyma is a highly underrated vintage watch brand and even today in 2024 you can still find absolute gems for very little money relative to most other well known brands like omega and Tissot ect. at a similar quality with very nice in house automatic and manual wind movements. recently i found a very nice 1960s stainless steel cyma "navy star" for a few hundred dollars in great condition.

    I was given a watch that was Branded super lux that I'm guessing was made in the sixties. It had a very plain face with no numbers, and said Swiss on the bottom. Gold-ish coloured hands similar to the Hamilton and markings to every 5 minutes only. 17 jewels. I've not been able to see one like it on the internet !!

    It's more fun if you dig in yourself and just buy what your eyes like , i mean no one would recommend you a Takano Watch because not many people know about it , the company only existed for 5 years , The Service could be difficult and there are not many spare parts , i need a new crown for example , the current one is somehow working but something doesn't fit , but this was one of my best vintage watch purchases , it looks class i love it , and my Zenith XL tronic Tuning fork watch were definitely the right pieces for my collection .

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good eyes! It appears as the screw is missing, but for this case reference 3 screws with 3 case clamps is correct. However, it is common to find this reference with just 2 screws with 2 case clamps. In that case, have one clamp on the left and one across of it. The one in between the bumper springs do not require one.

    Hey Sao! Looooove these watches. I have a Mido too. Question: Why is it called a “power wind”? It seems that I don’t need to wind it as much to get a full wind. Is there a special mainspring in the movement?

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very nice!
      Power wind, if I am correct, represents that this watch is an automatic watch. These older/early Mido automatic movements are not complicated using less parts in their automatic system. The mainspring is a regular automatic one.

      Before you buy any watch, make sure you like it first. Then do some research to make sure everything is correct and original on the watch. A redial and a factory original dial can have a 90% price difference. Case polished can affect the value a lot as well depending on how well it is polished. This is something that you can ask on the Omega forums for advice by posting a picture of the watch. I'm sure someone there can assist you with that. Unfortunately, due to my busy schedule, I can only assist with questions related to the product that I have for sale on my site.

    Radium burns - does that mean it's risky to wear such a timepiece? Thanks for the video.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One radium watch on the wrist is not going to cause any harm. But, if you are a watchmaker, then best to use good ventilation when working on one. Do not break the dust and inhale the radium dust. If you use a rodico to clean the dial, make sure to throw away the rodico when you're done using it. When the radium is sealed inside a watch, a little amount of radon gets released. I conducted a test in a small room of about 100 sq/ft; inside, I have 100 watches with radium luminous paste on their dial+hands. The radium reading is very high on my Geiger reader, so for a watchmaker to open them all up would be dangerous. However, since these are complete watches, the radon reading average for the week on my Radon detector is below the warning level. That means if you own one watch with radium, it's not going to hurt the hairs on your wrist when you wear it. That said, this is my experience and thought for you. Whether you decide to own one is totally up to you.

      @TimelessHistoryChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Quality wise, they are equally as great. But design/appearance wise, IWC movements are much more attractive.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel

      Thank you so much for subscribing. Honestly, when it comes to vintage Omega I can point out many 36mm models. But for other brands I am unfamiliar with most of their models number. So my recommendation is first to look at the condition and quality of the movement before buying it.

      You mean the cleaning solution that I use to clean the movement? You’ll need a cleaning machine first. First station you need to use L&R ultrasonic cleaning solution. Second and third stations you use L&R rinsing solution. Last station is spin and dry.

    Unusual hands for a Zenith Pilot of that age.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, now you learn something new. :)
      Should google up 1950s Zenith Pilot and you’ll find many examples with these hands.

    • @velviaman3206
      @velviaman3206 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did as you suggested and found 1 in 25 searches with these hands, I also searched in Rossler but his 50s examples are the same as mine.
      I have 12 vintage Zenith watches including 2 Pilots. Let us call these hands less usual .
      I like them and will keep a look out for them to add to my collection.
      All the best, keep the interesting content coming.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow. 1 in 25. 😅 Maybe location difference can affect Google search?
      But that’s right, Pilot model usually are with dauphine type or syringe type hands. But the ones on this example are definitely correct, and it’s important that it belongs to a Zenith Pilot and not some other Zenith models from what I know. Unfortunately, I do not have the record showing when in the 1950s did Zenith introduced these hands. :(

    Nobody has ever recommended an old watch to buy, as only ever seen them, then buy them from the 50’s to 70’s, only person I know with a watch owns a £15 grand Rolex.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel

      Oh, believe me, the vintage watch hobby is vast. Countless people own more than one vintage timepiece as well. 😀 But, it is not common to bump into someone in the street and see a vintage watch on his wrist or even a new one on his wrist. Maybe a smartphone. haha
