    I was lucky enough to be around some of these as they were built at UT Austin's School of Architecture. Victoria's chair is designed to accommodate her perfectly, and she knew cork was a traditional flooring material. Mr. Chen's piece used large vacuum bags and foam formwork to accomplish the shape.

    Wow it was so cool to recognize my great grandpa's planes!! Last display right as you mention German heritage. My great grandpa was a wagon builder from Germany. I inherited his wood planes and am restoring them, irons are sharp and I am working on the soles. I fully intend to use them. I also got his radius plane. New to the channel but you have changed my life with the knowledge.

    You mentioned German presence in Texas. That reminded of the accordion. I read an article about that. Crafts and music once again universal language.

    Thanks for providing a tour of the truly inspiring craftsmanship at the show. And like you, I gotta wonder just how much steam was applied to that plywood table to get those bends (at least that’s my guess).

    as far as "the garden bench" Yeah, I'm no fan of live edge either. There's always a story behind it though isn't there? That bench is one out of eleven created from a live oak tree my neighbor cut down. I had just purchased my bandsaw sawmill and it was the first tree I had sawn on it. that was in 2008. there was not so much "live edge" present in 2008 and to me, that's what that tree wanted to be. so, there's that. I appreciate your noticing of the angles and execution in the lines on the bench. Please note, it was not part of the show but for sale in the gift shop so it might be there for a bit longer.

    Maybe that plywood table is multiple thinner layers of plywood laminated together to get that appearance of a thicker piece of plywood?
    19:34 Those really thick laminated pieces are really cool!

    • @nfix09
      @nfix09 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      was thinking they started with the stack of veneers for the plywood, made the cuts for the "legs" that would fold down, flat glued the veneers to make the table top, leaving the leg portions un-glued. then after the top was dry, bend and glue the legs portions against forms for their shape.

    Nice maybe some year I will go. It is about 2 hours one way from me. Could make a weekend of it. There is a haunted hotel there I have wanted to stay at so I could get two birds with one stone. :) I have heard there are many other reportedly haunted places in Kerrville as well. :D Thanks for sharing this video. My son wants to make a band organ out of wood (and other bits of course) but would they consider that furniture? I do tables so obviously my things would be considered furniture. Maybe he can make his band organ have a dual function like storage or something. :P - Heidi

    Some of this stuff is so extraordinarily beautiful, and then other stuff is like modern art and in my opinion is no better than average woodworking. Is modern art making it's way into woodworking?

    • @barstad-9591
      @barstad-9591 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, and why not! It’s not your thing, but it’s still art and furniture combined. Mid-century modern furniture design and art deco furniture design weren’t so long ago.
