Thank you so much. I'd seen/heard this before but not with good sound.
Most of my tears shed in the past day have been thinking of McLaughlin and how sad he must be.
Rest in Power Jeff Beck. We are all made by you. 💔

    I’ve never heard Django before.
This sounds really excellent and very beautiful with AirPods in. ❤ God bless Jeff 🙏

I've been a fan of both McLaughlin and Beck for decades. (Saw the original Mahavishnu Orchestra at Carnegie Hall ~1972 on the Inner Mounting Flame tour.) But I have to say, seeing them together on stage really puts Jeff's mastery in a different light. He's clearly not as fast as John, but the range of sounds he gets from his guitar makes it another instrument altogether. They're both incredibly creative and melodic, but John didn't/doesn't innovate technically like Jeff did. Jeff existed on another plane altogether. Love them both, though. And very sad about Jeff's sudden passing...

Jeff had a bigger bag of tricks to use vs. John. If you study Jeff's plaing over the years, you see he falls back on these "tricks" over and over again and it becomes alomost predictable that they will show up in his solo's. That's not to say that he isn't unique in his playing, but it is similar to EVH having his own tricks to pull out of the hat frequently.

Two of my favorite players! Wow! Thanks for this. Been following them since the 70’s. 70 yrs old myself! Btw, l wrote a piece in the style of Jeff about 12 years ago… 'Blues for Jeff' a tribute. I am but a candle compared to the bright suns of Jeff and John! But we mortals have to keep trying!!

Thank you for uploading this. One always wonders what the quality of something is going to sound like - this captures both of these musicians truly complementing each other and having a great moment. Beck was really pulling out all the stops in his first solo. McLaughlin just smiling and vibing with the music, and the rhythm section just nailing it.

In 1972, I heard McLaughlin play "Marbles", with Buddy Miles on drums. I had never heard anything like it, until I heard Beck. And I have not heard better, or more ethereal music, since.

That sure looks like Narada drumming, but I don't think he toured with Beck that year. Maybe he was guesting, too?

Me too, thought it was the incomparable Narada - just the way he drives it, and the range from strong to subtle :)

Hi, can we remix this so we can actually hear John? You know, the actual ‘star’ guitarist on the stage? No disrespect to Jeff, who was pretty decent too.

    • @MrTennis88

Well if john was the star guitarist then Jeff was the star musician. Playing guitar on a stage with John McLaughlin means being in a competition. In my universe Jeff Beck made by far the larger musical statement here. John played super fast scales. Jeff played almost like Hendrix and drove the music. And, I am not someone who has a lot of Beck's recordings. But that is about to change

Wow, jeff more than holds his own here, john often just sounds like a 33 rpm record at 78 rpm, while jeff is almost Hendrix like in his musical force. I'm sorry but any rock guitarist sharing a stage with John Mcglaughlin is in a speed competition that is not to the advantage of their musical style. Only Jeff Beck could have kept his style intact in such a pairing. Beck really was the most talented of the yardbirds ,just amazing, and somehow below the radar of stardom for many, but not for guitarists. A musicians musician. Today I will order every cd he ever made.

@@jesusrivera743Unfortunately, no. I adore Santana and for my taste he is a more beautiful musician than Mchlaughlin, but his duets with john descend into a rapid fire guitar battle, that almost anyone other than Al dimeola, a few others have to be left behind in. Beck, on the other hand has the right style and abilities to fend john off and even comes off sounding like he has a lot more to say than john, who often sounds like he is being played at 78 rpm. Hats off to Jeff beck, this clip actually increases my respect for him, which I could hardly believe would be possible.

@@MrTennis88 I saw Santana and Jeff Beck at the Jones Beach Theatre in New York. Jeff Beck was the first act Santana closed the show. I remember after Carlos came on spoke to the audience said he had invited Jeff Beck to come on and play with him. Jeff Beck declined . I was so disappointed. Both Beck and Santana individually were awesome that night. Terrific show .

The world’s greatest players in the decade of the universe’s worse sound.
I’d like to compliment the musicians but this lifeless plastic sound is killing it for me.
Beck’s guitar still sounds kinda ok (even really good at times!) but the rest, sorry 🤢🤮 I will never get that 80s sound.
…(And I do realize that this is probably not even from the 80s. It’s 80s sound nevertheless).
