  • Wesley discovers the utility of his multilingual proficiency during a conversation between his employer and Madame Gao.
    Daredevil belongs to Marvel. I do not claim ownership for the clip I merely cut from an episode from the Netflix series.

    What Kingpin isn't afraid of:
    - The F.B.I.
    - A violent armored ninja who beat the Hand.
    - A psychopath with deadly aim.
    - Mass murderers with a hatred for criminals.
    - Prison violence.

    This was actually a power move by Fisk here, well, his attempt. Gao called it - the wise man plays the fool. By pretending to need an interpreter, he allows others to think they are smarter than him, as people who are multilingual are usually smarter. This can cause pride, which can cause situations where they might flaunt their superiority over him, by speaking in other languages in front of him. By pretending to not understand them, he can get them to lower their guard around him, which is quite important. And if the interpreter leaves the room for some reason, the multilingual person that Fisk is dealing with, or their people, might let loose something in their language that he might otherwise never hear. This is actually a very smart tactic by Fisk, cashing in on the arrogance of those around him. He even fooled his own people, since Wesley didn't even know. That's how good Fisk was at this, until Gao caught him.

      I speak polish and love it at work when the agency lot sit there and talk shit thinking i dont know what they are saying. One said i was a fat idiot to my face in polish and the agency supervisor said it meant "easy mistake" I put in the grievance and totally wrecked him by calling it out. He lied to the other managers saying what it really meant, to which i then spoke to him in fluent polish. His face went from smug to shock. I then said i want a grievance on him for lying too." I started a new job four months ago, so far its going well, noone on nights knows i speak it, and its still fun hearing them talking thinking i dunno whats being said. As Gao said "the wise man plays the fool" noone pays attention to the idiot, its the smart ones people watch

      @suppperdude9 I don't know about smarter, but speaking other languages fluently makes you think differently, since you think in the other language(s) when you speak it(them). Since words in Different languages have different sounds, meanings and etymology. For example Plot can be "plot of land" "plot thickens" or even words like which and Witch, same sound but completely different on everything else. In french you have words like "Porte" that could mean Carry, door or wear. It's even worse (or better) when both languages don't have the same base, Latin for French and Germanic for English.

      Winged Valkyrie he sounds fine for an actor who doesn’t speak any Mandarin, it’s much better than fucking house speaking jibish while pretending he speaks Mandarin, the words are all there and technically all correct, and GAO speaks in a very plain form, like she is reading from written words, which is probably the line the actress was given from whichever semi decent translator, so she had little choice on the matter, normally people speaking won’t say the same thing using the those choices of words, but it’s not like that effects much of anything since only a small fraction of us watching is natural Chinese speaker, if you give it to someone who learn Mandarin in some Chinese school, they will tell you the words meant more or less what they say, but her pronunciation is quite on point, so blame it on the translator not the actress

    • @aaronliu9945
      @aaronliu9945 4 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      Her "Chinese" has a noticeable Cantonese accent while his is barely understandable at first listen. Neither of them are native Mandarin speakers but it's easier for a Cantonese speaker to learn Mandarin due to those languages having more similarities in phonology and syntax than for an English speaker to learn and for his part, he's doing okay. If he had more time to learn the language AND integrate it into his Wilson Fisk character voice it could probably be improved, the basics are there. But also, I put "Chinese" in quotes because no one speaks "Chinese", that's not a language. Even "Mandarin" can refer to several different languages, dialects, and language groups though it's most often used to refer to Modern Standard Mandarin which is the official language of the PRC. "Chinese" is a language group that encompasses dozens, if not hundreds, of distinct languages.

      Proper Chinese has a lot of lilts and intonations because every word can have 1 of 4 sounds, ranging from flat to hard (to grossly oversimplify). A native Chinese speak Chinese would sound a little like singing because of it. Basically, any flat delivery of Chinese wherein all the words sound similar in tone would sound weird to a native Chinese.
      Heck, even as a Singaporean Chinese, some mainland Chinese people have difficulty understanding us because we also tend to have flat tones sometimes

    It’s interesting the between Madam Gao and Stick, both try to teach Wilson and Matt that compassion to others makes them weak. And while it does give each of them an Achilles Heel that can be exploited, it also can make them more dangerous since when the things they love are threatened their anger intensifies. Matt was willing to cut a guy just to save a kidnapped child from some crooks, and even though Leland threatened to destroy Wilson’s empire, that still didn’t stop Fisk from throwing Leland down an elevator shaft to avenge his girlfriend

    • @dariusbrock2713
      @dariusbrock2713 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stick at the end of the day did care about Matt and Elektra. He kept that plastic bracelet Matt made for him, and he even gives him a hug and says he's proud of him at the end of season 2. It's also obvious he cared about Elektra in the flashbacks.

    Since Sandrine Holt won't be playing Vanessa Fisk on Born Again and Ayelet Zurer is returning to play Vanessa again on Born Again, Sandrine should play a different character on Born Again. She should play Madame Gao's unnamed daughter, the daughter would have a longer lifespan like her mother.
