The game was based on one of the developers dream journal that they kept before going on to create the game. The game actually has an end when the player reaches day 365 the game plays an ending video and the game actually has a generation seed that alters what you see in you're dreams much like Minecraft and other procedurally generated games. It gets manipulated in real time based on what you do in the game in general not even just with what you do in the dreams but the seed also gets manipulated based on whether or not you save or load or how many of the intros you watch (there are seven unique intros you can get when booting up the game btw) or even how long you stay on the title screen this can effect the probability of rare events like the astronaut landing or the plane crash. there is also an easter egg when you look up at the Farris wheel in happy land from a certain angle and walk towards it, it will begin to play a secret video that depicts a sun with stars or if you manage to cover up the eyes and nose of linen the creature on the dream chart that you see at the end of every dream and in some intros a series of videos play almost every video in the game actually as sort of like a playlist. The music in the game is not actually random but instead just a very large number of songs that can be played in many different instrument sets this is one of those things that is effected by the dream generation seed much like the dream duration, textures (there are 4 different texture sets you can get picked at random when you travel to another world) and random encounters. Another thing is the man in grey he will sometimes spawned in front of the player later in the game (after day 20 I believe) if he touches you, you will lose the ability to flashback to previous dreams its sort of like a compilation of everything that has happened in you're dreams up until now which is a big part of the game when you see him you can easily avoid him by just looking up and walking into him he'll just keep going the other way and never hit you. You may have noticed the screen flashing different colors during dream transitions these colors signify the type of stuff you will encounter in that area purple and green are typically more likely to encounter the man in grey and generally wierder dreams white transition are normal and less likely to encounter wierd things (plus if you want more generally messed up stuff to happen try staying around the violence district (the city that's always dark) you're bound to find some messed up stuff there. Another thing that can effect random encounters is actually what day you're playing on, the game has a system known as the a,b system where day one would be day a and day two would be day b it keeps going in a pattern like this it I believe you're more likely to encounter certain things on A days that you are less likely to encounter on B days and vice versa. that's everything that I find interesting about this game there might be some things that I missed or got wrong but this is all off the top of my head so its bound to happened.
People underestimate how groundbreaking LSDs mechanics were for the time. A first person camera on ps1, basic procedural generation with seeds, actual emergent gameplay mechanics with the dream mapping system allowing different "routes" shit was actually crazy.
