Nalanda was a renowned Buddhist mahavihara (great monastery) in ancient and medieval Magadha (modern-day Bihar), eastern India.
Nalanda is considered to be among the greatest centers of learning in the ancient world. It was located near the city of Rajagriha (now Rajgir) and about 90 kilometres southeast of Pataliputra (now Patna). Operating from 427 until the 13th century.
Nalanda played a vital role in promoting the patronage of arts and academics during the 5th and 6th century CE, a period that has since been described as the "Golden Age of India" by scholars.
The current site of Nalanda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2010, the Government of India passed a resolution to revive the famous university, and a contemporary institute, Nalanda University, was established at Rajgir. It has been listed as an "Institute of National Importance" by the Government of India.
Nalanda University was built by Kumaragupta of the Gupta dynasty in the 5th century BC. Prominent rulers of the time, including King Harshavardhana of Kannauj, Pala Rulers, and many scholars patronized Nalanda.
Finally At The End Of 12th Century Invader Bakhityar Khilji Demolished The Monastery, Killed The Monks And Burned The Valuable Library. At Present In View Of The Fact That This Place Was A Symbol Of Asian Unity And Strength, The Nalanda International University Is Being Established Nearby.
Burning down the Nalanda University library, destroying around 9 million books, and effectively suppressing Buddhism. It took 3 months to burn down the library.
