We did the coastal loop, Sant Hilari Dam loop, Mare Dèu, Del Mont, Hincapie loop. a few other quickies… Made the 5 days count! 330 miles 20k 23hrs. We’ll get two weeks in next year!
Dont underestimate your Strength as a touring cyclist. I cycled up the Col du Galbier, Col Du Telegrah, Mont Venteux to name a few with Pannier Bags over a 2 week trip in France and passed many a road cyclist. I had a Sirrus Specialized touring Bike at the time, with low gears making it easier to climb those big peaks, but i was till fit at the time . We climbed L'Alpe-d'Huez without Panier Bags, and felt like we where going up the mountain on Ebikes
Asturias airport (OVD) is the best choice if flying in. 30min from Oviedo and direct links to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels … definitely plan it in summer as in winter there’s typically snow or at least it is too slippery to ride. “Enjoy” the climb!
Excellent video! I loved the format of how the info was delivered in those segments. I would like to see more videos like this about other popular cycling destinations not only climbs. Thanks GCN Team! 😊
Love that kind of videos! Packed with enough infos to address the basic to approach both the climb and the trip to get there. Hope you will be filming others like this one 👀
Did Zoncalon this year, so Angliru is the only toughie left to do. Roll on 2024! You only need disc brakes if you have carbon rims, Alu rims are fine with rim brakes.
Pico Veleta till the top including last gravel kilometers might be another very hard climb. Climate is drier, although "one day the stage" from the beach to the sky must be extremely hard. Better two or three days and visit the city.
Rode Angliru in 2018, the goal was to complete without unclipping and stopping. Achieved that goal but was spent at the summit. The descent on alu rim was scary as wet roads and the rims started to get very very hot, I was pouring water from my bidon as we inched down, also avoiding the acres of cow poo
Super video Conor. Watched the GCN+ version already but this is really good.. more please. And I am sorry to lose GCN+ and all of your affected colleagues who did such a great job for us fans...
Good luck for everyone who plans to ride this mountain. The views are breathtaking. I know the road from 40 years ago. It was a bad gravel road back than, but already iconic. Not for cycling, but as a long day hike.
This is great content idea - would love to see more series like this. A suggestion of a topic to add - what else is there to do in the area, eg. something for your non-cyclist or non-extreme cycling travel partner to do when not riding.
Asturian here, Angliru is great, but don´t miss Gamoniteiro and La Cubilla (My fave, local stelvio), right next to it. Proper riders do the 3 in a day if starting early.
Got added to the bucket list this summer after ticking off the Stelvio and Gavia and sat in the sun with a beer. Might try it late summer, but have some Swiss challenges lined up first.
Try the alternative start to the climb via the village of Grandiella which has a couple of ridiculous ramps at 30% which are harder than the long steep ramps near the top. The Vuelta will never go up this way as the road is way too narrow however.
Yes! This September on day 6 of a Cent Cols Challenge event. Slap bang in the middle of a stage with over 5,600m of climbing. I very nearly failed to keep the front wheel on the ground :) @@gcn
I would absolutely love to do that climb! I am going to have to get a hell of a lot fitter before I can tackle a climb like that. Perhaps someday. My family comes from Spain, so I have always wanted to visit.@@gcn
overall the Alto L'Angliru is NOT the hardest climb in Europe - it certainly has the HARDEST section of ANY climb I have ridden - but for overall PAIN - it has to be Monte Zoncolan from Ovario - NOT as steep as Angliru but overall it is consistently steep with countless unrelenting sustained sections in the15-22% gradients whereas the first 2/3 of the L'Angliru are comparatively timid - it is the final 1/3 that earns L'Angliru it's fearsome reputation and deservedly so - having done both I think I am more nervous about riding Zoncolan again - you feel like you are on the rivet the entire climb - the only respite you might get is some 50-100m sections in the 10% category that by then feel like RELIEF - as your reward at the end of those breather sections it usually walls with 20+% just to balance things out - Monte Zoncolan is the HARDEST climb in Europe imo
The Angliru is the Only Climb in Europe that Can Break the Spirit of the Best Cyclist in the world. And turn those 12 kms in a real Living Hell for 99.9% of all professional Cyclists.
Nice. If you know of where you can practice the climb virtually before you go, it might be a nice bit of info to add. Eg. the ride is also available in Zwift.
I had the opportunity to go to Angliru on vacation this year climb it and see the stage of la vuelta. For those who say it's easy, it's not... although it's not one of the biggest climbs in Europe, it's tough if done at a world tour pace, it's not at a walking pace like we do I went up with a fairly large plate (36 large plate and 30 on the small plate) and I struggled a lot with my cadence (40 average) on slopes of 20%, if I had a bigger plate behind me it would have been much easier. I got tired of overtaking people on the way up, and even though people were already walking because they couldn't climb, I went to the top without putting my feet on the ground and only one person passed me... guess what... on an electric bike :D
I guess us from the UK are not going to be totally scared of the gradient as there are stupid steep climbs over this side of the pond we come across for short sectors. Its the pure length of the Angliru . Maybe fit a triple chainset for the occasion as back up if the legs start to fall off.
Is this an older video, or did the Asturians not care anymore? On the momument to the climb at 4:43, Carthy and Roglic is missing from the list of the winners.
The first time that we visited Oviedo, the young woman that was moving our luggage every day was quite surprised that we were drinking the cider. She called it “cat piss”.
Matter of opinion , a lot of the diffuculty of a climb is in the steep kilometers. And 11% does not compare to 24%. Otherwise yes there are many longer climbs with more altitude gain than the Angliru.
done both, Angliru is harder in my opinion, would say i suffered twice as much on the Angliru, its a feat to keep going without stopping on those steep sections, zig zagging most of it, not required on the Tiede climb
Would you ever ride the Angliru? 🗻

It's probably too much for me, I'm strictly a touring cyclist myself, but I love the focus on travel and tourism.
Absolutely not!!!
Sure, just for fun/check my limits🤟

As a local, there are some minor inaccuracies in this video but overall fantastic. We pronounce it AnGLIru not AngliRU btw
We were just in Spain for 10 days… This would have been an awesome climb to tackle! We’ll route this on the next one! 🙏🏼🤙🏻

I live in Spain ( Almeria ) and I've got some good hill climbs to many to mention in my area.
Spain is a hotbed of great riding 🙌
@gcn we had a stage of the world tour come through my village, if you ever come out to film I can show you some good hill routes.

RIP Jimenez, you were a legend brother.

David Miller must be tall, GCN plus video was the only time that Connor looked proportional to another rider.
How does it stack up against the "valley of the tears" strava segment?
Conor Dunn. The walking tower😊😊

What a legend 'King Kenny' is!
Turkey- Babadag is 18 km and 1800m 😁
Did you see that climb in the Tour of Turkyie! What a climb! Would you give it a go?
