Crazy how this song came out in 1998 and it's still a banger. Bit of context: this is both the main theme and the final boss theme. You definitely have to listen to "Live and Learn", which is also the main theme and final boss of Sonic Adventure 2
Johnny Gioeli, the vocalist for Crush 40, has such an amazing voice. He just has that right amount of grit and impact to it that made their songs feel so powerful to listen to. Combined that with Jun Senoue's epic guitar skills and you get this absolute Iconic rock soundtrack that defined Sonic for so many years for so many people. It certainly has for me xD Crush 40 has stayed as a staple for Sonic music for a long time, starting with this banger of a track _(On that note, you definitely now have to react to its sister song "Live and Learn", which was the main theme for Sonic Adventure 2!)._ They'd stay as the main composers for Sonic until 2009, with their last tracks being recorded for "Sonic and the Black Knight", though they'd return 10 years later to do one vocal song for Team Sonic Racing in the form of "Green Light Ride". _(If I get any of these facts wrong, feel free to correct me in the comments)_ All the songs they made for Sonic are all worthy of a listen, you should definitely take a deep dive into it and see how much their music shaped Sonic for so long! Seeing you explore Crush 40's music would be so much fun! Also, to answer your question of what Sonic music was like before this, you guessed it - they're still bangers xD While most music in the classic era of Sonic are instrumentals, they do have a few vocal songs here and there. An example would be the main theme for Sonic CD *"Sonic Boom"* by pastiche. Crush 40 would also cover this song in 2011 for Sonic's 20th Anniversary! For something completely unrelated to Sonic, can I request something? Could you maybe react to the music video of *"LOVE!HUG!GROOVY!!"?* (/watch?v=RPwsEn9KZGg) It's such a good listen and I'm curious to see how you'd react to it. I hope you consider it for future Episodes!
Michael Jackson was one of the composers of Sonic 3. Check that out, even comparison videos. He didn't like how it sounded in the 16bit font in the end and discredited himself BUT after he passed away they haven't made official releases of sonic 3 using his tracks. There sure are NDAs in the picture but this speaks volumes.
If you’re really going to go down the rabbit hole of Sonic vocal music then here’s a bucket list songs that I feel you would need to listen to to understand the evolution of the music, in chronological order: - Open Your Heart (Sonic Adventure) (which you have already seen) - Live and Learn (Sonic Adventure 2) (which many consider to be the best) - Escape the City (Sonic Adventure 2) - What I’m Made Of (Sonic Heroes) - I Am All Of Me/All Hail Shadow (Shadow the Hedgehog) - His World (Sonic the Hedgehog 2006) (there are three VERY different official versions of this song but are all great) -Endless Possibilities (Sonic Unleashed) (my personal favourite) - Knight of the Wind (Sonic and the Black Knight) - Reach for the Stars (Sonic Colours) - Fist Bump/Infinite (Sonic Forces) (these are the closest in style to Frontiers (ESPECIALLY INFINITE) which makes sense since this was the game that came out before it) There’s definitely others that are of worth note but these I feel are the crème de La crème of what represents vocal music in sonic
I totally agree with you, the only songs I would personally add are: " seven rings in hand" from sonic and the secret rings and "with me" from black knight
i have been playing sonic since i was little and sonic is one of the reasons why my music taste is the way it is. no matter what sonic never misses with music
Sonic Adventure was the very first game I ever played, and Open Your Heart has always had a special place in my heart. Seeing you react to it really gave me chills, love seeing the Adventure love. If you do future Sonic based episodes, maybe consider Live and Learn, (especially) Knight of the Wind, and Live Life. Knight of the Wind is a favorite of the band and one of their most popular tracks Awesome vid, hope you have a good one! :)
if you you're curious how the vocals songs were before being what they are today I recommend you research for Sonic R, if I'm not mistaken this game was the first to have actual vocals for the whole song, The most famous in the game is "Can you feel the sunshine" because a few years later it was linked by fans to a Creepypasta involving one of the game's characters, But there are several others in the game that are very good
@@wesleyprower I think only two tracks in Sonic R had vocals… I forget… But I suppose technically you are right that it was the first with vocal tracks for gameplay…
I always love your reactions! when you play the song unlike the other youtubers you won't stop the song in the half of it just to talk, neither talking while the song playing, you just wait and taste the song then after it's done you'll tell us your opinions! also natewantstobattle songs slaps, you should do a reaction of the knight of the wind song, you can react to the og and Nate's Version.
Yup Sonic Adventure 1 was the beginning of Jun Senoue's short reign and it changed the sound of Sonic completely for the next 7 years. It was MY gateway into rock and metal which I never liked before but quickly became intoxicated with. This was my favorite triple a soundtrack ever and my love for it was what inspired my dad to buy me a drum set and get me lessons. Now still doing music to this day.... And still a fish out of water, writing music on a computer influenced by music people say is "just so 90s." The joys of being 28 years geriatric and still writing rock music on a computer after 15 years :)
I would definitely recommend checking out the Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony they did like 2 years ago, it's like 2 hours long so it would be a long react but it's a great starting point to hear over 30 years of Sonic music history, the first half is an actual symphony orchestra doing renditions of everything from the original instrumental 16 bit tracks to the game before Frontiers while the second half is a full rock concert with Crush 40, NateWantsToBattle, and the guy who did Frontiers music, Tomoya Ohtani. Also if you are looking for more non-Sonic game music to check out, would 100% recommend some songs from the A Hat in Time soundtrack like Rush Hour, Trainwreck of Electro Swing, The Battle of Award 42, and Your Contract Has Expired
Crush 40's vocalist do defo be having sum "Don giva fuk" energy in his voice lol, i know its cliché to say but this song rlly defied my childhood,i had no internet growing up so i took the Mp3 files of the songs by digging through the PC version of the game lol, E-102 Gamma's theme is another fan favorite from this game, its more of a mellow chill song, but i rlly recommend checkin it,its pretty interesting
A lot of the Sonic games before Adventure leaned more into a pop music esc sound, the first two games were composed by a japanese pop artist and Sonic 3 was actually composed by non other than Micheal Jackson believe it or not
Well songs in the Sonic franchise before Adventure anyway technically don’t have rock music in them. In the genesis/CD era, it’s more like 16-bit MIDIs but the CD was capable of having actual music being capable in it in Japanese and US soundtracks for Sonic CD. In Sonic R however, A FANTASTIC VOCAL OST was in there alongside 3D Blast’s instrumentals for the Saturn System. In the first 4, 1-3&K & CD, the music has a 90’s/80’s vibe but they’re all distinct from each other or even inspired or covers from music IRL.
