Foam Cannons...Why they don't foam as well on electric power washers

  • So I finally figured out how to get the foam considerably thicker after completely ruining my original MJJC foam cannon I bought off Craigslist. The one word to the problem?
    Orifice!!!
    Almost all foam cannon you buy online, regardless of price, comes with a standard orifice bore size. They are 1.25mm and sometimes, 1.5mm. They are made specifically for high GPM pressure washers you'd normally see in gas pressure washers.
    The solution? Why get a super expensive foam cannon when you can GET A ORIFICE WITH A SMALLER BORE!!!
    I decided to buy a MJJC orifice from the website directly (mjjcshop.com/). For my particular foam cannon (MATCC from Amazon), it fit directly. Michael and Xiang were both very patient with me and met all my requests.
    Total project: $20.00 for the foam cannon, another $20 for the orifice (expedited shipping).

    Worth noting that not all electric power washers are the same. I have the 3000 PSI Greenworks washer from Costco and 1.1mm orifice actually made things worse in the Adam's Premium foam cannon. MJJC recommends 1.35mm orifice for 3000 PSI pressure washers, so I got one, but haven't had chance to try it out since it's cold and rainy in Portland area.

      I work closely with some of the top detailers in my country. The commercial grade pressure washers they use at their shop is far more powerful, much higher gpm ratings than my shitty Simoniz 2000psi electric pressure washer which I just upgraded from a 1600psi unit. Even when I use the the stronger 25 degree nozzle, all the way up close to the paint surface, it is still not powerful enough to tackle dirt and grim buildups from winter driving. Result in scratching the surface when applying soap on the paint with wash mitten. After comparing to the ones they use at detailing shops, I’ve decided to get myself a gas powered washer.

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fijod a lot of folks aren't too excited about going the gas route primarily because of price and/or noise levels. I honestly can't stand the noise gas produces. However, I've seen foam cannons foam very thick on higher psi/GPM gas powered pressure washers. We're talking the consistency of battered egg whites--thick and gooey.

      Zeron Saetern , thanks for the great video! I just ordered the MATCC foam canon you recommended for my SunJoe SPX 4000. My concern is that I noticed on the website for the orifice you used, they are saying to only use the 1.1mm orifice if your pressure washer is under 180 Bar which is like 1600psi, otherwise use the 125mm orifice or the PW will pulsate in and out which seems like it would cause backflow and be bad for the engine. Have you experienced this at all or tried the 125mm one from MJJC? Also, is there any cheaper soap that foams up nice and thick like that Honeydew before I order? I'd appreciate your advice man, your setup looks awesome! Hope this makes sense...

      Those tiny hooks on the top of your caliper are there for a reason! You can measure (precisely) the diameter of holes!

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel M. That doesn't fit the hole for 1mm. This particular micrometer cannot fit through the broached surface anyways. The other end where the hole is larger is bored with a counter sink so it flares outward. I cannot use the smaller hook to measure the ID of the bore on either side for that particular reason.

      You're right bro, and right now I've got a ryobi 2000psi 1.2gpm pressure washer and I'm thinking of upgrading the unit for better results, would you recommend your sunjoe unit? I was looking at the spx3001 model and I'm comparing other models as we speak, even looking at upgrading the gun to a MTM unit so I can maximize my washing experience, ANY input is highly appreciated my dude 👌

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Abijah Gribble I've never bought a MTM foam cannon. If you are, get the 1.1mm orifice or you can buy their orifice separately if you already have one. If it were me, I'd buy the orifice from MTM or mjjc first and try it out before I actually submit to a high price foam cannon.
      The sunjoe have a 1.76 GPM on all the spx3000/3001 or spx4000. I like my current one and is built like a tank. If I were to get one, I'd get the one with a hose reel for simplicity and space. The 3000 have very weak side arms for holding up the spray wand and accessories. They're currently the highest GPM at the price range.
      Others have bought the same setup I have and got the same results. My only complaint is the wand being too heavy and long (personal preference).

    • @abijahgribble
      @abijahgribble 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zeron Saetern for sure bro I will look into that, I have ordered 2 diff 1.1 orifices from 2 diff websites 1 from the link you posted and I will be installing and testing them on my chemical guys torq foam cannon, the orifice in mine looks identical to the one you pulled out and I will test to see if I see ANY improvements. I did look at the reviews for the sunjoe and there is ALOT of bad reviews like how they have their own unique hose adapters from what I've read so you can't go to home depot for adapters. And THE biggest complaint I seen was the inlet where the water hose goes into, it's flawed and apparently sunjoe knows it and will send you an adapter once you register the unit and contact them? Otherwise it leaks or sprays? Is that right?

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Abijah Gribble sorry for the very late reply. SunJoe saw the flaw with that hose connector and they changed it over to a metal connector. When I bought the pressure washer, it had already came with the metal hose connector. It also have the gasket on the inside to minimize leakage from the hose.

    Had that smaller one as an extra with my mjjc cannon. Manual stated it should only be fitted with washers 1700psi or less, mine is 2200psi, but the foam is about the same as yours in the beginning of the video. Maybe I should try and fit it and see what it does. I've noticed in detailing video's that these guys get very thick foam and still have some left in the bottle after foaming a normal to bigger car. My wife drives a small car, a Mazda 2 and the bottle is as good as empty when it's completely foamed. If i'm careful i'll just get by for my car that is normal sized.

      RawGreySun I'm not sure if greenworks' pressure washer is adequate to produce thick foam. It has the required PSI but @ 1.2 GPM, it may not have enough flow rate to draw from the bottle as you'd like. There's another video of a guy who used a greenworks and a 1.1mm orifice but the results are still runny.
      Sorry. I cannot say for sure if it'll produce thick foam with a lower GPM pressure washer.

  • @zeeahh02
    @zeeahh02 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oo man I thanks for posting this. I thought only gas PW only get thick foam.
    But I have a dilemma. I have the same sunjoe PW as you, 3001 to be exact with the reel and I just ordered the Dusichiin foam cannon from amazon.
    I’ve read your other comments about the 1.1mm orifice fitting that foam cannon but I’m wondering is it worth getting? I like thick foam but I read you can damage the pressure washer. But I figured since some foam cannons come with 1.1mm can it really be that harmful. I know I’m not going to wash my car everyday with the PW and I like using the foam gun with the garden hose instead cause there’s less wires.
    So basically will this new orifice be worth it if from time to time I use the pressure washer.
    To be honest I had no idea about this slight modification, until last night and now I’m debating if I should pull the trigger or not.
    Sorry for the lengthy comment, but thanks for the video it clarified a lot of things.

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zia Mahmood I haven't had any issues with pulsating from an overpressure going through the 1.1mm orifice. I had the deuschin foam cannon before I scraped it. It comes with a 1.5mm orifice meant for up to 3000psi. You can always switch orifice if you see it pulsate.
      The main factor for thicker foam isn't PSI--it's GPM. Lower GPM pressure washers can barely get by with the 1.25mm orifice, as you can see in my comparison.
      When your foam cannon comes in, try the setup and if it's not what you'd expect, get the 1.1mm orifice. And if you're still nervous about pulsating, get the 1.25mm orifice to be on the safe side. I just didn't like the original orifice because it's not giving thick foam.

    • @zeeahh02
      @zeeahh02 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zeron Saetern thanks for the quick reply. I had no idea the dueschin came with 1.5mm. I will be trying it this weekend but of course if I don’t like the results I’ll get the 1.1mm.
      Is there a reason why you scrapped the deuschin foam cannon? I had $60 chemical guys one, it came with 3 soaps too but my brother got a house and we’d always wash cars together, so I let him keep it. I didn’t wanna to spend $60 again, so I figured this $16 should do the job.
      I think over the weekend I’ll order the new orifice. I don’t use the PW that much but when I do I love the thick foam. So I think I should be ok with pulsating.
      The sunjoe is at 1.76gpm with 2030psi, but if you’re saying you don’t have issues and I won’t be using it that often I should be alright in general.
      Once again sorry for the long reply. But thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zia Mahmood no need to apologise. The deuschin broke down. It couldn't spray because the adjustment knob area was bored deeper so it interrupted the jet. I was my second foam cannon I destroyed and water was literally filling the reservoir instead of drawing from it.

      Sergio Rendon you might have too much pressure and GPM? That's a Honda engine in your DeWalt gas pressure washer. At 3400psi and 2.5GPM, the lowest orifice size you can use may just be the 1.25mm.
      If your foam cannon is pulsating, then the orifice size is too small. Another common difference is car shampoo vs car soap.
      Before I can point you to the right direction, what foam cannon are you currently using and what type of foaming solution with what mixture?

    Hey Zeron, great video. So I just ordered the MATCC foam canon you recommended for my SunJoe SPX 4000. I'd appreciate your advice man, your setup looks awesome! Hope this makes sense... (I posted this comment earlier but accidently put it in the wrong place, sorry)

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rsmithers7878 sorry for the delayed reply. The original orifice on the matcc foam cannon is about 1.25mm bore. You'll see that my calliper cannot measure into the hundredth of a millimeter when I did the measurements but it's far from a 1.5mm bore.
      For the pressure being a tad over pressured, I didn't noticed any pulsating in the spray. Yes, the psi is much higher than 1600 but I'll take the chances of a better foam quality and other uses for the washer other than producing foams. My rationale is that the washer I used is relatively affordable if it goes down and won't burn a huge hole in my pocket.
      Regardless, you'll always have the 1.25mm orifice from the matcc and of you do buy the 1.1mm orifice, you can always swap them back if you feel it'll start to pulsate or damage the washer.
      As for the car shampoo, if you can get a magifoam soap locally, get it. It's odorless but the thickness of the foam is gooey like shaving gel. I simply got the honeydew because I could order it off Amazon and it'll arrive in 2-days. Plus, it got the thickest foam I found of all the soap I've tried locally.

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the long reply. The honeydew is the thickest car shampoo and the lowest price I could find online. All the soap you buy at the local brick and mortar stores are not shampoo so don't waste your time and money on them. I've tried it all and they're mostly runny.
      One thing to consider is how slippery some car shampoos are vs soap.

      Zeron Saetern to add to your point I also found a TH-cam video from the MTC guys emphasizing that they put a 1.1mm oriface in their foam cannon that is recommended to use for any PWs with than ~3 GPM output, which might be a more important variable than PSI for determining 1.25 vs 1.1mm

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      rsmithers7878 the determining factor for thicker foam is GPM and shampoo type. The sunjoe is only 1.76gpm. the psi only matters if the GPM is too high--similar to that of a garden hose fully opened with no spray

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      eric q I honestly cannot say it'll fit it or it'll be the right clearance for the foam to work properly. As of right now, i know it fits a deuschin, the matcc and the mjjc itself. I would order it and if it doesn't fit, I would opt for a foam cannon that'll fit.
      If you want, take apart your jet orifice and do the measurements to see if they're the same. I did an in-depth measurement of the dimensions (except the thread pitch).

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chevy guy55 there are a few options and i tried one of them before.
      Option 1: take your jet spray orifice out and bring the whole unit to a local machinist. Have him make you two exact dimensions but with a smaller orifice bore sizes--one in a 1mm bore and another with a 1.1mm bore. Why the two? Just in case the 1.1mm orifice doesn't work, you have another with a stronger stream too make thicker foam.
      Option 2 (and I advise against it at all cost unless you're willing to destroy your foam cannon). Solder shut the orifice and drill your own hole size. This is what I did and completely ruined a perfectly good foam cannon.
      If you own a metal lathe, machine your own to exact specs but a slightly smaller orifice.
      Last option is to simply order one and if you're not a fan on waiting, chose expedited shipping and it'll arrive in a week. Sorry but this is the fastest I got it from overseas.

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chevy guy55 sorry, I forgot to mention that you cannot find this piece in a local hardware store. I've already done that and believe me, every garden specialty store and general hardware store does not stock it. There isn't a local machinist where I'm at to fulfill my special request.

      Genysmen runner the gold class is not a shampoo. It's just a regular car soap with low suds. For my case, I filled it to 18oz of water and then 3oz of the shampoo. I noticed that if I go 4oz, the consistency is like thick shaving cream.

      J_slayer 1337 it's different for everyone's when comes to usability and foam thickness. I use 4oz of honeydew and top it off for my qx50. For my Celica, it's just 3oz.
      Do you dilute the contents at all or just straight shampoo inside the reservoir?

    what is it with the word orifice its like 'moist' nothing wrong with it, but it just sounds nsfw.... i mean theres nothing wrong with a moist orifice....

      It has everything to do with word association. Tested and confirmed by research.

    so its the cannon not the washer

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chris s yes and no. If you're using a electric pressure washer, you'll need a foam cannon with a 1.1mm or a 1.25mm orifice to get good results. If you're using a had pressure washer with a high GPM, you can get away with a 1.25mm or a standard 1.5mm orifice in your foam cannon

      CalypsoRaz well you have to use a "caliper " to measure your "threadings".

    Sun Joe Power washers are rated at the very lowest end of the scale, refusing to run after the first time its turned on. Bad story if you read beforehand. HF has a winner at half the price.

    That's not how you use a micrometer....

    • @Zeron18
      @Zeron18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miguel Cruz how so? The arms have a flat part where I used often to get a clean measurement on large flat surface. The tapered tip have a slight 0.3mm less than the flat part.
      I'm well aware that the micrometer doesn't have the capability to measure the very small gaps so I had to use my eyes to do an estimated measurement. It's also the same way I do machining and the parts come up to +/- 0.1mm tolerances

  • @broderp
    @broderp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Dude, you need to learn how to use a micrometer. All your measurements are done incorrectly. You could have just simply said that the smaller opening helps create more foam for as much the information you gave was worth.

      ali rasheed the only way is with a micrometer like how I did. Don't pay any pins into that hole because you'll risk the chance of ruining the jet spray pattern.

      ali rasheed they're relatively inexpensive. One of the best investment I've purchased to do machining work or precise measurements

      Olavo Olavo I'm not sure if a typical orifice will fit an autobrite or Sam's foam cannon. I don't have the foam cannons or a thread pitch gauge to tell you if they're the same or not.
      Sorry
