Saw Cake three times in one day at SXSW. They were playing at three different industry parties. Kinda crazy considering how popular they were at the time.
I've seen Cake a bunch of times. The best time was at The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, NH. They took the stage and McRea told a story about overhearing some waitresses talking near the bathroom. One said to the other one, "Oh I wonder what they are gonna play last?" And they both laughed about The Distance being a one hit wonder track. Now, I was already in the know from previous Cake shows that they almost always close with Jolene. So, McRea says, "So, we're gonna play it first. If that's all you came to hear feel free to leave afterwards." And then they played The Distance. No one left.

You know how the band you like never plays that one song you love in concert? Well, the second time I saw Cake, I waited too long to get a beer after the opener had left the stage. If I went to get a beer, I was in danger of missing Cake coming out. I decided to get a beer anyway as they would probably open with something off the radio or MTV. Standing there, third person in line, and I heard the crowd start cheering. Then I heard Stick Shifts and Safety Belts echoing out. That moment made me realize I loved Cake.
I saw them get booed off the stage at Edgefest in Barrie, Ontario in 2001. They were slotted to play in between Sevendust and Default… they were doomed after the great show Sevendust put on… they played a couple of songs and people from the crowd were bewildered at the oddity of this band Cake (playing after Sevendust) and began booing and throwing the odd water bottle at the band… Mccrea yelled at the crowd “if you boo and throw 1 more bottle we’re leaving”….. I've been one of the biggest fans of the band since before they got big. But I'll tell you, some of us are just sick of getting an earful of preaching about politics. Cake was quite literally the band that made me pick up and learn to play the bass guitar back in the 90's. Their style was nothing like what we were used to hearing at the time and it just completely gripped myself and my brother.
I went to Sacramento city junior college at the same time as Greg Brown and we had several mutual friends. He taught me how to play space oddity by Bowie one day when I stopped him while he was walking by at sac city. I knew he was a Bowie nut and I’d been wanting to learn that song. He was very cool and gladly stopped and showed me how to play it. I saw Cake play at Sacramento state college in mid 90s as well. I also saw Saturdays child once. I drive by that Starbucks that is featured in Short Skirt Long Jacket in Sacramento and instantly think of their iconic music video. It was a reaction video before reaction videos.
I absolutely love Cake. I never got to see them live, and I hate that fact. I go through phases where I will listen to pretty much just Cake for a month or so at a time. In 2002 or so I tried putting a Cake tribute band together, but it never gelled.
I still have a Short skirt to go with my Looooong Jacket...Na na na nana. Love and miss Cake! Sad Drummer almost killed the band in 2009. Peter McNeal is where he belongs now.
Cake jams! So many good, feel good (and bad good) tunes. They seem like they'd still fit in the modern music circuit these days. But I was 14 or so when they hit the radio. They have lots of cool tunes.
They are interesting, me and my son-in-law both still listen to them. The lead singer has strong opinions about a lot of things and I think he has been ostracized a bit for that, which is too bad (our younger society is way too into a censorship sort of approach to ideas).
Had the displeasure of seeing cake twice, at two different festivals. They are just awful. I mean, maybe the band itself is ok, but all I remember about them is just how shitty their frontman is. He has one hell of an ego for a guy that talk sings.
@@jr2904 I heard that quote about the death of disco was wyte supreme assist and I was "huh what?" Like out of nowhere "the racism did it"...derp comment of the century. @@billschlafly4107 keep the music, even if the singer has delusions, the music is great. Guitar, for example, is practically shorthand for Atlas Shrugged.
I’ve been one of those 15 people at a Sacramento show. The cool thing about that in the eighties was that I saw bands ranging from Exodus to RHCP to the Decedents to Black Flag to Slayer at clubs/bars like El Dorado Saloon and the Cattle Club at 14 years old with a handful of other punks, metal heads and skins! Of course there were the ‘bigger’ shows at The Crest Theater with Dead Kennedy’s and G&R in their prime. Fuck I miss being a teenager!😢 😂
i've seen them a few times in the last ten years here in Seattle and they put on a really good show. He's a great frontman and the band is tight. Highly recommend seeing them live.
I like Cake, but I sure hope the statement "the disco sucks movement was partially white supremacist" was a typical example of the bands dry humor in which denying it is humor with a straight face is an aspect of the delivery.
I saw them back in 2000 on the "Unlimited Sunshine Tour" with Kinky, Modest Mouse, and Flaming Lips. It is still one of the best shows I have ever seen. See them live if you have not, definitely worth the the time, money, & effort!😉👍✨
Universal music appeal died with the introduction of streaming, not because someone died or tastes changed...everything is still here on TH-cam, from 60's to today to...everything. It's a segmented, divided world we live in...
I had a friend that went to their concert when they first starting making headway. My friend was a very talented musician. He said the group wasn't great playing their instruments but said it didn't matter it was probably the best concert he ever went to. I understood what he meant many years later when I was at a Michael Franti and Spearhead concert.
I discovered Cake from watching the TV show Chuck... which uses an instrumental version of Short Skirt/Long Jacket as it's theme song. Ended up falling in love with the band... just saw them n concert a couple of months ago. Great band!
Cake in many ways, was the sound of what Kurt Cobain spoke, not what he played, it was like the sarcastic yet loving hug he never got to feel. His floating ghost commenting on his now dead useless body. Cake represented the core missing ingredient of the grunge movement, humor and humility. Grunge was always bound to be the angry miserable cousin of hair metal. Success used to kill it self, before it could enjoy the fruits of its labor (Dave Mustaine warned grunge, don't do heroin; nearly all its casualties are narcotic related)
Unfortunately, Cake managed to ruin themselves for my wife due to a really bad show last summer. Outdoor show, in the rain. Started well over an hour late, and McCrae was just....off for the first part. They played a handful of charts with him being off on timing and pitch. They then spent 30 minutes doing their tree thing while the crowd obviously was having none of it. The rest of the show was pretty good, but at that point, she was cold, wet, miserable, and stuck in a crowd of angry, cold, wet, drunk people and just wanted to leave. Haven't been able to listen to them in the house since.
I definitely think the anti grunge sentiment was a breath of fresh air at the time. lol, they were alternative alternative 😅. Contrasting the ubiquitous, self destructive depression music with something very different. I had a match, but she had a lighter…
"Disco sucks was a white supremacist movement" No, disco sucked whether the artist was black or white, and apparently many black people were a part of that "white supremacist" movement 😂
This band was consequential at the time amid Creed, Train, Fuel, Candlebox etc. always interesting. Weird live performances where they were almost antagonistic to the audience. Musical Andy Kaufman imho.
I absolutely love cake, ever since its first record was playing on the local college radio. I love that I can sing along because John Mccrea range is limited. It is my go-to road trip playlist. It was a little overplayed in the MTV years. They had cake songs in every show it seemed
Cake is NOT a lie... I was kinda introduced to them thru hanging out at Buffy the Vampire Slayer's fan community back in the day. Alyson Hannigan was a big fan of them at the time. The Distance and their cover of "I Will Survive".

Should have called it "Fake", using the same font styles, art, etc.
I love these deep dives; they help me figure out what music I used to listen to I need to get rid of.
They are interesting, me and my son-in-law both still listen to them. The lead singer has strong opinions about a lot of things and I think he has been ostracized a bit for that, which is too bad (our younger society is way too into a censorship sort of approach to ideas).
Man, I love CAKE!!! I saw them in Seattle years ago, it was such a good show!!!
Had the displeasure of seeing cake twice, at two different festivals. They are just awful. I mean, maybe the band itself is ok, but all I remember about them is just how shitty their frontman is. He has one hell of an ego for a guy that talk sings.
Lead singer can be found having TDS meltdowns on X.
Not surprising after his comment about what happened to disco, I guess the beegees are black lol
@@jr2904 I heard that quote about the death of disco was wyte supreme assist and I was "huh what?" Like out of nowhere "the racism did it"...derp comment of the century. If I ever see those meltdowns, I'll be filing all my Cake tunes into the bin with bruce springsteen and green day - aka - the recycle bin.
Clueless libtarts maybe they need to vist diddly with his baby oil in hand.
I will try to ignore his mental illness and continue enjoy the music.
@@billschlafly4107 keep the music, even if the singer has delusions, the music is great.
Guitar, for example, is practically shorthand for Atlas Shrugged.
Greg Brown is one of the best guitarists of ‘90s alternative-rock; he has a very unique & original & inventive style
That "shirt skirt, long jacket" song was the theme to the great spy/comedy show 'Chuck'.
Cattle Club was my adolescence.
They just wanted dental insurance and a 401K.... they should have wrote a song about that lol
i've seen them a few times in the last ten years here in Seattle and they put on a really good show. He's a great frontman and the band is tight. Highly recommend seeing them live.
They were awesome in Nashville “Dancin in the district”. One of my favorite shows there
I like Cake, but I sure hope the statement "the disco sucks movement was partially white supremacist" was a typical example of the bands dry humor in which denying it is humor with a straight face is an aspect of the delivery.
I don't think it was humor, sadly.
His TDS proves it.
I love Cake so much, I have been listening to a ton of the old albums this year
saw cake last year and they put on an incredible performance. such an underrated band nowadays.
A byproduct of a diverse society.
Fashion Nugget is one of the best albums of the 90's.
Great band!
The best thing about Cake is their friendly association with Jackpot, one of the greatest acts of the era.
He is handling the money
He is serving the food
He knows about your party
And he is calling you……
....bro!
Dude
In my opinion, one of the most brilliant bands of their era.
Leftist logic. Most musicians suffer from it.
This band was consequential at the time amid Creed, Train, Fuel, Candlebox etc. always interesting. Weird live performances where they were almost antagonistic to the audience. Musical Andy Kaufman imho.
Always a fun show. Glad to see them again in Philly again ❤
I can definitely smoke a fat blunt to this 👊
Live show, was so much like the recording, I thought they were lip syncing.. real deal.
I absolutely love cake, ever since its first record was playing on the local college radio. I love that I can sing along because John Mccrea range is limited. It is my go-to road trip playlist. It was a little overplayed in the MTV years. They had cake songs in every show it seemed
Never forget that Cake is so fun, they give away fruit trees at their shows. I ❤ Cake.
Cake is NOT a lie... I was kinda introduced to them thru hanging out at Buffy the Vampire Slayer's fan community back in the day. Alyson Hannigan was a big fan of them at the time. The Distance and their cover of "I Will Survive".
Thank you for the post! ✌🏼😊
"Let Me Go" is their best song IMO
I love Cake like fatties love cake! Thanks for the video!!
You are so welcome!
Sheep go to heaven…
while listening to this song my gen z son asked 'so Lebron James is going to hell?' 🤣
@@giventofly76 you should've educated him, Michael Jordan will always be the goat lol
… Goats go to hell.
