- Neck & Arm PAIN/NUMBNESS? Check your Scalene muscle for trigger points. The scalene muscle group is found along the lateral and anterior part of your neck. If you have any trigger points (tender spots) in those muscles, it can cause soreness and pain in your neck, shoulder, upper back, and in to your arm. Check this area first for any trigger points and work them out, see if that has a positive effect on your symptoms. Please leave any questions down below in the comment section and thanks for watching.

This technique really worked for me. Thank you sir. All praises to the Most High Yahuah of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
You are very welcome!
Thank you thank you! I have had gnarly forearm pain and numbness that I thought was carpal tunnel but it also felt neck and shoulder related. Massaging my scalenes have instantly caused relief. Can’t thank you enough.
You are very welcome Julie, happy to help!

Thank you.
You're welcome!
Wow thank you
You are very welcome Julie!
Hi I've just watched your video and im definitely giving it a go. I've had tingling and pain in all the points on the diagram that you have shown in your video, especially around my shoulder blades and around my neck and ear area.my right gland behind my ear is always swollen and big aswell. Also my scalenes in the right side of my neck spasm a lot and go hard. I'm get dizziness and feel quite unwell with headaches at the back of my head. I've not been diagnosed with this but all the symptoms are there. I really hope this works as I've had this problem for over a year and it genuinely puts life on hold. Thanks for the video. If you have any more advice I would love to listen.
hello sir i went to a massage, she is a woman , she was massaging hard behind my clavicle , on the right, and it was hurting after some days im feeling a bit pressure on that area due to my posture, it is like a ball there between the clavicle, she try to make it become small, but for some , i feel pressure near my armpit, when i pressure lightly on the area she was, will it be ok by itself, i scared if she massage on a vein that can restricted my blood blow , do you think its a point to massage there?
Excellent post. Scalene muscles are my worst trigger points by far. Thank you for showing me the proper way to treat them.
Sir my right side scalene trigger was paining and while eating food swalling paining. I am 16 years old. I am feeling needle like pain and shaking fingers and hands . 😭 What I have to do.
Would you recommend using infa red heating pad on the SCM and scalenes to promote healing?
i Ed my sensations are not too much where you explained mineisu der the chest arm armpit, back or the shoulder
Are Yu ou familiar with this and what might help this?
What happens if you have the great misfortune to have a full on shingles outbreak added on top of these preexisting scalene injury parts of your neck and ear? How can I get a proper manipulation or adjustment of these areas, even after the lesions are gone, but the post neuralgia pain rages on? I'm sure mine also involves the rotator cuff and SCM Sternocleidomastoid. Total misery that only looks like morphine can help with now. Nothing else seems to work.
i started getting little waves of dizziness later after doing this trigger therapy. is that normal? it felt good at the time.
Hi! I am a medical practitioner. I think you maybe pressing too much on the Internal Carotid Artery. You maybe able to feel the pulse as well. Since this artery supplies your brain, pressing upon it can cause dizziness. Please be careful. That is not the point where you should apply the trigger therapy.
My neck is always sore, never knew this was a thing. However, I'm not sure if I'm doing anything 🤔
Hi - i just tried doing this - find a point that sent pain shooting down my arm!! im sure that's not right!
Please suggest tablets for this kind of pain
I got injured by a chiro and my scms and scalenes on both side are so tender & tight. It feels like a tight rope. My ribs are extremely flared and I have arm and leg weakness. I tried PT but they weren’t helpful . I’m unsure what to do. Any advice ? I’ve also done MRI’s and have spoken with doctors and am told it’s all muscular skeletal
Learn yoga or karlakattai meipadam you’ll be fine in a few weeks and feel greater
what about on the collar bone? im 35 and work a lot with overhand movments (painting) and Im bodybuilder..train 6 days a week..and my collar bone seems to have knots just above (on) the collar bone....feels good to massage it and hold the trigger point...is this ok to do? I can't find anything with kots ON the collar bone.... its weird..
I applied prolonged pressure on the scalene pressure points on the right side of my neck and there was an intense pain and tingling sensation down my arm which I ignored and persisted. Now the outside of my right upper arm, inside of lower arm and thumb are numb. It's been a week and it doesn't seem to be going away. Should I be worried? Or can I let it heal on its own?
I have pain around rotator cuff, bicep and arm numbness I have this for 4 months. How long will it last
Hope u see a Physical Therapist before it becomes a frozen shoulder
I am having a problem because I am having a Muscle bulky by born on left hand side and having an extreme symptoms of numbness, sever neck pain . I done physiotherapy for one year but still no improvement. I just wanted to know do I need to operate for the same because the pain is unbearable!
I’ve had tingling and pain in my mid-back and shoulder blade area for about 3 months. I began doing this technique, and I felt immediate relief in some areas! However, I think I did overdo it, because I was massaging for about an hour. I found so many trigger points and releasing them, it was becoming addicting. My neck is very sore today. What do you do if you massage too much?
Glad it helped Bob, but it does sound like you may have over did it! Should start to settle down in 1-2 days and then go back to it, but only about 5 minutes per session. Good luck!
@@FrontRowwithEd Thank you so much! I actually feel better today than I have in months, despite a slightly sore neck!

@@FrontRowwithEd Thank you. My neck feels much better today, but I can feel the muscle tightness coming back, even only 5 minutes after I finish massaging. I've also been applying a heating pad for about 15 minutes which relieves the tightness...temporarily. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. This'll be the 3rd time I've been to the doctor about this. I hope they finally prescribe me some physical therapy, which I wanted them to do the first time.
@@boblangford5514 Yes, seeing a PT would be very helpful. Let me know what the PT says. Let them know you've been doing some Trigger point work with success.
Been searching for some info on the scalenes. I've been experiencing tingling primarily across my thumb and pointer finder on my left arm. I thought it might be something in the pec major but speaking with my daughter (PT grad student) she mentioned the scalene muscles and the major nerves that run through that area, so that gave me a starting point, and here I am! I've been having some challenge finding the triggers in the triangle. Also, I can trigger (pun intended) the tingling instantly just by leaning my head back slightly. So I know something is clamping down on what I'm guessing is the radial nerve given the area that tingles.
I'll try your technique of laying down and see if that helps. I often make the mistake of overdoing it... if 8 strokes is good, 30 seconds must be better. Am I doing more to aggravate things than help?
I do a lot of overhead pressing in my workouts as well as clean movements, and also sit at a computer most of the work day.
Thank you for posting this video and for any additional info you might be able to provide!
Hello Bill, yes, you need to be careful to not over do it. Start easy with the trigger point work and give it about 2 weeks to see if it helps. Also, try to get up every 30 min at the most and do some light stretching, moving, walking, etc as sitting at a computer all day is not helping your cause. Keep me posted on how things are going, good luck!
@@FrontRowwithEd Thank you for the reply and the info! I will, indeed, keep you posted. Very much appreciated!
@@billf9526 HI Bill, you've described my issue to a tee. I have the exact same symptoms, induced from doing seated (very heavy) curls at the gym. Though over the last two months, the tingling has subsided, it lingers here an there. The stiffness when tilting the neck to the affected side is still present. Have you had any success in correcting your issue?
@@asymmetricvalue Thanks Chaz! I also still have it, though it's much reduced. With a strongman comp I was targeting coming up, I stopped the heavy work and did mobility for the week prior. That time off, only being a week, had this issue and a couple other chronic problems (adductor issues) fade significantly.
I'm curious to see how fast they come back now that training has restarted, but the week off was worth the reduction in the issue. The only time I get the tingling is tilting my head back and it's much less than it was. Hope that helps!
I drive trucks and this muscle kills me while I’m driving
Hello, can scalene muscle trigger points cause tension in the face and pressure around the eyes? I have pain in right shoulder that sometimes radiates down the shoulder blade and my arm goes numb. The right side of my face is constantly tense as if something is pulling on it… thank you.
Hello there, yes the scalene muscles can do that. Also, make sure that you treat your occipitalis muscle with trigger point work. I have a video on the channel, just search for headache pain and it should pop up. Good luck and I hope it helps
@@FrontRowwithEd thank you! I will look for that video. I find your videos very helpful, thank you for making this content!

Hi ed. Hope you're well. I've been dealing with all the symptoms you've mentioned (not including headache). I've been dealing with this issue for two weeks or so now. Started with mild tingling on my arm and shoulder chest nipple area. Very bizzare feelings. It then developed into pain searing pain. I thought it was shoulder impingement. Well after having a look through your videos I've stumbled across this little gem. When I do the trigger point release I can really feel it intensify the symptoms/pain.(I do it when my head tilted back at and angle to make the area taught). It feels really intense then after feels like a rush of warmth and bliss. My question(s) how often should I be doing this and also how long for? When do you think generally I'll be able to stop the treatment? Again thank you very much.
Hello, thanks for the questions. You can do Trigger Point multiple times per day, but each sessions shouldn't be too long (3-4 minutes total). After you feel better I would still work on the TP's but only 3-4 times per week. Let me know how it goes, good luck!
@@FrontRowwithEd thank you Ed for the advise. I have moments where it feels okay but then times where I'm really aware of the tingling/mild burning sensation and feel I've lost progress. Silly I know to expect such changes so quickly. I think I acquired the "injury/flareup" doing handstand push-ups. Are there any other videos you have on these trigger points. Or stretches etc? Thanks again.
Thank you for sharing
My pleasure Dalia, hope it helps
