Annie M. G. Schmidt was/is a staple for every Dutch kid. Besides that, I loved Ot & Sien, the Pinkeltje series by Dick Laan, pretty much everything written by Astrid Lingren, Paul Biegel and most of all the series written by Walter Farley about the Black Stallion. Still like to read from those books to my nieces and nephew.
I did read those books when I was a kid (library subscription for the win!) but they didn't grab me as much as the horror/ fantasy genre I came to love and still love.
