Thank you for standing up for House of Wax (2005) and for putting Suspiria (2018) in its place.

26:30 - 27:03 Really gr8 insight here, this topic has been on my mind a lot l8ly, I really think films should be much shorter nowadays, like 45mins tops, that's probably too far to the other extreme, but does a film really have to cohere to such traditional notions such as a 90min run-time anymore? Don't get me wrong I do think 90min. should remain the standard, but less is more, give me quality over quantity.

Thanks! There's a strong virtue in the traditional 90min model. I think it best fits the narrative structures and expectations of popular cinema. I believe the arthouse and the underground can do whatever they please and be as radical as they wish with runtime in either direction. But we're talking about mega blockbusters here. Studios have stopped caring about time. They are slowly becoming careless of the theater experience. Movies are slowly morphing into 'streaming' and creating new runtime models that I find disagreeable. Altering the standard cinematic runtime changes every aspect of the filmmaking process (longer shoots, damages screenplay integrity, and even changes the way an audience interacts with the finished piece).
It's interesting because I have no real issues with long television seasons. In fact, I cherish them. I could do 22 episodes easily, without complaining at all, because there are different expectations from the narrative systems involved with designing TV.
