That's how many parents are. If a stranger tells them the truth about themselves, they shrug it off, but when their own child says the same thing, all of a sudden it's "backtalk" and "disrespect". When I was growing up, the adults were ALWAYS right, and the kids were ALWAYS wrong, and as a kid, you were not allowed to take offense to it, no matter how arbitrarily the adults treated you. Later, when the adults found out you were innocent after all, no apology, no nothing. If you were in the wrong, you had to practically beg for forgiveness. The one-sidedness of it all still makes me angry today. 😠

    *_FUN FACT:_*
That poem is an actual poem that the real Rocky Dennis wrote. In fact, according to an interview Rusty Dennis did back in the 80s or 90s, this scene is very accurate to what happened in real life. The drug/alcohol pamphlets being left around the house, the dishes being broken, ripping the baseball card, the slap, etc.

Plus his reason for getting her all those NA and AA brochures for Christmas went WAY over her head; as he tells her, he doesn't want her taking drugs, is all. He's sick to death of her going out every single night and getting wasted out of her mind and coming home completely out of it, as a result. At least in the scene right after this, she makes up for her ugliness here by telling him she actually liked his poem.

I’d have to go back and check in the book again.
      I think it isn’t.
She started using the drugs more after the first father left.
But I gotta go back and check.
      Update:
In the film 🎞 he tells the doctors it was neither the mom or the dad’s fault
      Update from Novel Page 10:
It says that rocky’s condition is not a result of any teratogen ingested by either parent but rather two recessive genes contributed by the mother and father. It’s extremely rare: 1 in 22,000,000 births.

This was too real of a movie. Many would be quick to judge Rusty as a nasty, trashy person and drug addict, but the reality was she wasn’t a bad person at heart at all. She did drugs and ran around to deal with having a son that had a physical disability and later on a judgmental father disappointed with her choices she made in life. She was a great mother to Rocky most of the movie that reassured him especially with a school principal that assumes he’s special needs, a cold and impersonal doctor, and that he’ll be just fine in the long run when he starts school and win people over with his kindness and good nature.

2:17 ...today that's considered child abuse ..smh. Anyway I love this movie. Cher was excellent. Stoltz was and Laura Dern. She was so adorable in this. Especially the scene when Rocky first meets her when shes taking care of the horse and she says "are you starving? I'm starving..will you take me to lunch?"
    So damn cute

In this scenario it is child abuse, Rusty neglects her son and when she’s faced with reality for her own sake, she takes it out on him and hurts him, physically and mentally and then neglects him again. This scene is a depiction of child abuse.

    • @killerkitten7534
      @killerkitten7534 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

You know this would probably shock you, but in the 80s that was also child abuse. People just tended to normalize neglect and channeling anger into physical corporal punishment as opposed to parenting more.
Still was abusive to slap your kid after he calls you out on your rampant drug abuse after neglecting him consistently just as it is today

    • @kagemaru259

The Color Purple and Mask should've swept the Oscars that year, instead of that boring snoozefest Out Of Africa. Goldberg should've taken the Best Actress Award, and Best Supporting Actress should've been between Winfrey and Cher. Eric Stoltz for Best Actor and Danny Glover for Best Supporting Actor. Why he wasn't even nominated for Mister is a damn shame. He was EXCELLENT in that role.

If drinking, going out all the time and getting laid all the time is more important then u shouldn't be a parent. No kid likes to be alone all the time.

It is very easy to judge her guys but the whole point of the movie is life is not the way we always fantasize it is. We are living in our own Disney picture perfect imagination world. Life is life and it is not some imagination. We have to accept our life just the way it and with available options try to grow out of it. Nothing is normal this is the message this move gives. This movie is much better than Titanic

Her first priority should be for her son not drugs or men. She had no right to slap him in face he care about his mother. He doesn't want her to get high on illegal drugs all the time or get laid all the time. Eric Stoltz playing Rocky was his best performance he deserves a Oscar for this role.I heard Rusty pass away.
