Nintendo's sticking to cartridges costs them their alliance with SquareSoft. The N64 didn't do too bad at all but the PS1 overshadowed it in game variety.

    • @bitleman1

And now the PS5 is considered revolutionary for having no loading, like the N64 did lol. It tells us marketing is just a matter of big money.

Which also cost them their alliance (at the time) with Enix as DQ7 was a PS1 exclusive and there were no Enix games on the N64.

Sony drew first blood with that contract taking royalty fees from Nintendo. Nintendo would have been a de facto 2nd (if not 3rd) party. Sony would have been in the driver's seat one way or another.

    • @budgiecat9039
      @budgiecat9039 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sega also embarrassed Sony when they were asked to partner up "What does Sony know about video games?" I believe was Sega's response. Then that 1995 E3 moment happened...

    • @budgiecat9039

@@mohammedganai9636 Kinda like how Nintendo treated all of its 3rd party partners namely Namco which infuriated Namco so much the CEO made a news article in a paper condemning Nintendo as a greedy monopoly and threatened to make their own rival console with NEC (which fell under due to Hudson objecting to the idea who were already partners with NEC). So no, Nintendo were never saints in that regard. They just got a taste of their own medicine.

@@budgiecat9039 That was mostly Nintendo of America, not Nintendo as a whole. But if you think Nintendo of America was bad, Sega of Japan was far, FAR worse. During the Master System days in Japan, Japanese 3rd parties stayed away from the Master System of their own volition in favor of Nintendo; why, because Sega of Japan wanted more than 95% of all software royalty fees for each software/cartridge manufactured and sold. It was because of Sega of Japan's ruthless and draconian policies that Namco, Capcom, SquareSoft, Enix, Taito, Konami and others couldn't stand Sega of Japan and refused to develop for them or work with them. While yes, Nintendo of America was indeed very controlling and manipulative of 3rd party publishers in North America, they at least acknowledged how important 3rd party support was for the NES and gave them better rights than Sega of Japan. Sega of Japan was very ruthless and very unfriendly towards 3rd parties and didn't appreciate how important they were in the gaming industry.
Nintendo of Japan(one could say) was basically Sony; before Sony even came to the hardware market. Nintendo of Japan gave 3rd parties fairer licensing deals, reasonably priced dev-kits, allowed 3rd parties to manufacture their own cartridges in house; provided Nintendo would keep a small percentage of revenue for each software sold(which is why there are different cartridge variations for the Famicon in Japan), allowed 3rd parties to customize and produce their own sound chips and processors in house for their cartridges royalty free, and was just overall easy to get along with.
The only real reason Sega was able to get 3rd party support during the 16 bit years was Sega of Japan gave Sega of America's Tom Kalinske full control of the company by engaging more friendly with 3rd parties and heavily supported 3rd parties in a different way than Sega of Japan did; in exchange for putting Sega on the map in the early 90's.
It wouldn't be until after Sega finally convinced retailers to sell the Genesis/Mega-Drive, that Sega filed a lawsuit against Nintendo of America for their unfair monopolizing practices that they finally got what they needed to get the console wars going. Nintendo of America was not only forced to release their grip on 3rd parties, but they were also forced to pay Sega about 6.2 million dollars in damages for unfairly hogging the market from other competitors in North America.

Problem with cartridges is the limited storage. Benefit of cartridge is the speed games can load at. I would of loved to see Nintendo games with greater textures back then, but you know - growing pains.

Also, large storage was so damn expensive back then.

Biggest problem is that at the time, innovation was at the forefront and the ocean of gamers who were young kids when the NES launched were now just venturing into their teenage years. The PS1 felt much more like a console for teenagers and adults. It was the natural progression.
It just further fueled that movement that a lot of the heavy hitter JRP's were going to jump ship, due to the ability to have FMV and much more storage space. Plus pressing CD's was far cheaper. Nintendo made all the game publishers buy the blank carts from Nintendo directly.
It was a perfect storm of bad choices by Nintendo, and excellent choices by Sony

It's worth noting that Nintendo did use parts from Sony for their DOL-101 optical drives used on later revisions of the Nintendo GameCube. I have taken apart a ton of cubes.

I just luved PS1... The best console for me... But I enjoyed playing N64 and Sega Saturn a lot... They also have a special place. That shows no need for console war. Just enjoy those splendid machines with the best they have to give us... Before 5th gen my favourite used to be Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and on 3rd was Famicom/NES... Oh so many good memories...

One of the best and most important stories in video game history IMHO. While I haven't been a PlayStation faithful since the PS2 I absolutely appreciate what they've done for and within the industry. The only thing that really irks me about them is that they destroyed the Dreamcast. Not saying Sega didn't have a hand in that, but if Sony hadn't been in the marketplace, the Dreamcast and Sega may have had a much different outcome. Although the Xbox would have wiped the floor with the DC. Still, there may have been room for both companies to exist. Man, I just miss Sega as a console company even though I only ever owned a DC during their legacy.

Sega def had more of a hand in that due to the failures prior of the 32X and the Saturn. Too much internal fighting within Sega. Not to mention a ridiculous amount of spending on developing two (actually maybe even 3 i forget) Dreamcasts at the same time between regions. One of the reasons Shenmue cost so much was it was originally being made for the Saturn but the fail of the console prompted it to be moved to the DC

@@budgiecat9039 yep, I can't argue a single point you made. All true. I believe it was 2 systems. Black Belt and then Dural if memory serves me right. Ahh, man, it was just such an amazing and exciting time in the industry.

Not really part of this history but closely related: the MSU-1 virtual chip used in emulation aka SNES CD. Several games modified with extra video or music were made by the community, aiming at what the Nintendo Playstation could have been.

i remember reading about this in the nintendo power years ago. but sega came out with the sega cd. at the time. but if nintendo didn't screw up the deal between them & sony. we would had a sweet cd add on for the super nintendo. witch would put sega cd to shame. thank you nintendo for giving us the playstation.

The two big parts for me are both companies inking massively one-sided agreements. Maybe that's what they do in Japan, as anything is felt to be negotiable later on.

That and honor/pride being huge, leading to either side being too stubborn to course correct. One of the 32X team engineers for instance admitted to being too afraid to speak up and suggest to the Sega of Japan president that the 32X should have been canceled.

There is one thing that continues to bug me about that prototype - the logo and PlayStation text look too much like the later official Sony versions. If it was really from an earlier form, and given we have seen the myriad prototype logos as well, it seems highly unlikely that the hardware shown at the trade shows circa 1992 would have such a recognisable later logo.
