The last 60 seconds of this is pure gold. I know some people give Cage a bunch of crap for taking pride in his work, but he's doing exactly what he wants to do. How many of us can say the same thing? How many of us are working to make the world better reflect the ideals WE want to see?
The "go to" guy for stories. People go to david cage and say "hey david, how can I make this story shit the bed half way through and becomes as convoluted and nonsensical as possible?" Indigo prophecy could have been a great story of a mysterious murder investigation and a man desperately trying to clear his name, but it became some butt fuck stupid matrix X invisables save the golden child nightmare. Beyond could have been a story of a poor girl growing up along side this scary being she doesn't understand and coming to terms with the idea that she will never be a normal person, where as that devolves Into a retarded romp through the fields of the abyss, inspired by poltergeist, the mummy and the terminator. David cage if you want to know how to write a constantly escalating story go talk to platinum. As far as im concerned, cage has only ever made one "reasonable" game. David I look foward to the day you become a movie director so I can go to my local supermarket and browse your selection in the discount bin.
+davo46 I know. I started this and as soon as the interviewer said this, I stopped it. Now NAUGHTY DOG knows how to do freakin' awesome storytelling. Agreed?
David Cage is one of those True inspirational people towards creativity and emotional perception. His thoughts are really close to a philosophers thoughts. Well I'm over exaggerating...but you get what I mean
"Directing the plot"? Are you serious? The plot is written - you don't direct anything. You just press up on the right analog stick when the game tells you to!
I totally respect that - making games more accessible and further diversifying the medium is definitely a great idea. But I personally don't think that a game without gameplay can be truly immersive. If the player is not in full control 100% of the time then the experience can feel a bit disjointed due to the occasional but crucial moments where you actually have to respond to an unexpected or sudden quick-time event.
I can listen to David Cage talk for hours. In pretty much every interview I watch, there is always so much so much substance in his words about life & changing paradigms in design. Thanks GameInformer for the interview.
Although I do think Beyond is much more limited (or lazy) in its gameplay. It's really closer to an interactive film. But your choices do still affect how Jodie's life and dimensions unfold, although it leads to the same place. In Heavy Rain, you get consequences for your actions. All I can say is I love Quantic Dream games. They engage me at a deep and emotional level. Which is what the director set out to do in the first place.
There's a difference between doubting yourself too much, and being blindly arrogant and not evaluating critique at all. When you can write stories this incoherent and riddled with plot holes and still ignore the perfectly justified dissent. That's the definition of blind arrogance, and incompetence. Cage is the Michael Bay of video games, proof that being totally talentless is no hindrance to the top job as long as you can delude yourself and everyone around you that you're worth a shit.
Again, it's all about the illusion. There are 20 plots in Heavy Rain, all pre-written, but the decisions you make takes you down any one of those plots. There isn't any real choice in most games other than open RPGs.
Say what you will about his games, he's still one of the only guys on the planet that is turning his ideas and experiments into games on a level and scale that has gotten him noticed in the industry. I hope he keeps on keeping on, because we need people pushing the boundaires and redefining what makes a game.
It's just that he thinks you can't have a game where there is a lot of gameplay (i.e. where you actually do stuff ALL THE TIME, not momentarily press one button in a QTE to choose which cutscene you get next) AND have an engaging story. Even in 2002, a game called Mafia managed it perfectly well. Some would argue that Uncharted series manages it; although I haven't played them so I can't comment.
I didn't. I redboxed it for a few bucks and finished it in a weekend. But you buy it support Quantic Dream and you play more because it's a 16 hour immersive experience for which you are able to have a hand in directing the plot, as well as solving puzzles and mysteries (aspects inherent in all adventure games, like Myst), things you don't get going to cinema. You can't tell Sandra Bullock not to panic in space.
He makes good points but is so fixated on the idea that 99% of video games are just like Call of Duty, it makes him come across as being quite naiive to think that great story telling and innovations in gameplay and interactivity have not already been explored by plenty of games which he is unaware of.
I am not much of a gamer and I buy games just to see for myself what all the hypes are all about. GTA series were great, but I only managed to finish GTA3 (I doubt if I can be patient enough to sit through V). GT was great but only the first one I managed (while owning all the others) to complete. Heavy Rain on the other hand, I completed it 3 times... I finished Journey countless times... David does not make mainstream games, neither does ThatGameCompany and team ICO.
Then you should enjoy Beyond, and you should check out GTA V. If you are a fan of the series, especially if you enjoy San Andreas you should have alot of fun with 5.
Ok guys,we get it,you all love thesw1tcher. I love them too, stop referencing the same damn joke over and over again, DarkNemesis258 already made it. I also do agree with 434x18
Most games create the illusion of control. In Call of Duty you have very little control over story progression, you merely control movement and actions. Heavy Rain actually let you choose your story (out of 20 something possible outcomes). The closest games to full freedom are open world RPG types like Skyrim or Fallout 3.

"I made the bad game."
He should give himself more credit, he's made only bad games! That's plural!

Auto generated closed captions at 4:09 have translated 'Fumito Ueda' to 'tomato' and I thought people would like to know

did this guy just put his game next to Ico, SOTC and Journy?
he's a little delusional
very delusional
off his fucking rocker, really
David Cage is a failure of the game design
Regardless of how bad he may be when it comes to writing, he does have a really calming voice.
Stephen mark cerny is the same way
self doubt is a failure of the game designer.
Most overrated creative director out there and just nothing compared to Fumito Ueda.
Watch it again if you need to. No comparison was ever made. He was stating games he felt are landmark achievements.
I've beat heavy rain like 5 times. I can't wait for Beyond
it does get a little tiring.
"Directing the plot"? Are you serious? The plot is written - you don't direct anything. You just press up on the right analog stick when the game tells you to!
I totally agree on what he's saying. I just don't like his games, at all.
It sounds like pseudo-philosophical bullshit coming from a guy who overestimates how much people like him, like any auteur

Overusing jokes from great let's plays is a failure of the comment designer.

Failing is a failiure of the game design
Ueda is in his 40s...
Looks like he's just out of university...
Makes sense I guess.

so what he wants to do is make a game without gameplay. Basically an interactive DVD

Two Best Friends sent me here to tell you that game overs are a failure of the game design
fair enough. Just why would you pay five times as much to see it as a game rather than a movie? That's my argument.

Cage comparing him self to the creator of ico is a failure of the game designer
Ha ha ico came out several years before indigo prophecy you fail cage
