The players skill, level of competition and quality of opposition around the time of Andrew Johns career were Intrust Super cup level in today's standards. Thurston deserves number one because his era is far tougher and skillful.

He's a great of the game, future Immortal, but not the GOAT. His defence is a major weak link and one that Joey didn't have.

"I found Defensive stats for 173 of Joey’s games where he averaged 14.61 tackles per game, missing 2.03 per game. JT‘s has averaged 14.70 tackles per game across his career averaging 3.50 misses. Fox Sports has JT’s effectiveness in defence at 75%; this must include ineffective tackles, which I could not find figures for. To be fair to JT I used the same simple formula that was used for Joey (total tackles made divided by total tackles attempted times 100). Using this simple method Joey made 88% of all tackles attempted compared to JT who has been 81% successful.
When it comes to errors and penalties the stats I found indicate that JT is slightly less disciplined. In the 173 games that errors were recorded, Joey made 213 at 1.23 per game, compared to JT who has made 396 errors at 1.59 per game. Penalties were only recorded for 81 of Joey’s games where he conceded 44 at 0.54 per game, compared to JT who has conceded 156 at 0.63 per game. In addition, JT has also been sin-binned on 4 occasions. I am not sure if Joey has ever been sent to the bin."
So, who was the better defender again? This is also not counting that stats weren't around for all of Joey's career when the eye-ball test clearly shows he was miles in front of JT defensively. Go stick JT at hooker and see how many sets he lasts until he's back defending on the wing. Look, I love JT, he's a future Immortal but I can't stand people who don't want to be honest about facts and put bias aside.
Connor mumgay Johns has 351 missed tackles across 173 games which means he averaged 2 missed tackles per game. Thurston has missed 872 tackles across 249 games which means he averaged 3.5 missed tackles per game. Now let’s work out how many tackles Joey would’ve missed in 249 games compared to Thurston. Take away 173 from 249 and that’s 76 games. Times 76 by 2 and that’s 152 missed tackles. Add 152 onto his initial missed tackle count in 173 games and you get 503 total missed tackles. Still a long way below thurstons 872 missed tackles 😂😂

I don't understand how people think he was better then Johns. Joey had no flaws in his game, however everyone knew Jt's weakness was his defence. There's a reason why he always had someone around him to protect him in the defensive line. This is why Joey was the best player in game he was the total package.
JT is a top 3 player though - but definitely not the best ever.
My surprise is Cooper cronk not being mentioned in this argument of best ever. The year Qld lost the series/dynasty is when cooper was injured not Thurston was. The bloke literally played a Grand Final with one shoulder. If that's not greatness I don't know what is.

J t was a great player and a future immortal and more importantly a champion bloke but in my opinion he isn't the GOAT, that would have to be joey John's for me, no one could dictate the pace of a game like him and he changed the way the game was played.
