Preds fan here. Really happy for Askarov to see him go to the Sharks. A team where he will definitely have a route to being the primary starter unlike Nashville where Saros has him roadblocked with his new long-term contract extension. A highly touted goalie prospect like Askarov deserves to be on a team where he has the opportunity. Seems like it was a fair trade as well!
But look at the return for Kipper, and other elite/great goalies from then til currently. I love that SJ landed him, i really do. But I do not like what they paid for him. I wish they wouldve put together something that didnt include that Vegas 1st. Ultimate plan would been like what they did the past draft... 1st pick another forward, 2nd 1st rounder another Dman.
@HitmanHockeyCards What we gave up is magic beans. Edstrom is a 3C when everything goes right, Chrona is a backup when everything goes right, and Vegas isn't going to be garbage. Askarov, at the very least, is going to be vezina caliber potential, which we needed in forever.
Sometimes you have to pay to play. At least we know that he's got amazing potential now and a huge upside. With the goalie position that doesn't come along very often. Unfortunately, we don't have expendable assets that would equal that first. If I were a GM I would make this deal without hesitation.
2 years ago in 2022 the Sharks had an old aging past their primes expensive roster who were nowhere close to being contenders anymore that I think top GM candidates honestly shied away from this job knowing what a terrible situation the franchise was in going forward. Now imo the Sharks have one of the top 2 or 3 prospects pools with Celebrini, Smith, Dickinson, Musty, Bystedt, Mukhamadullin, Chernyshov and now add Askarov who is one of if not still the top goalie prospects to this list of top level young talent. This doesn't even include Eklund who had a good first full season in the pros in 2023/24 in San Jose last season. Add another high end prospect with probably a top 5 pick in the 2025 draft and hopefully they can sign a handful of quality free agent veterans to help teach this young core to be winners in the next couple of offseasons & the Sharks have one of the brightest futures for any franchise in the NHL.

Sharks got a good one. I live in Milwaukee and watched Asky the last 2 seasons. He’s had his playoff struggles, but he is a stud and definitely should be the goalie of the future for you guys.. Personally I would’ve kept him and traded Saros and I love Saros 😂
Super Juuse 😎 As much as I want to agree I have to disagree. The Preds are a playoff team, had they not acquired all the players they did, trading Saros would have been the best idea. They're pushing for a deep run though. Tough decision either way. Askarov should have been Saros backup this season, see how he performs and then make the appropriate decisions.
we have to look at: 1) Goalies take awhile to mature; we got that in 2020 11th overall pick, thank you preds. think of it as the sharks using their 1st this year on a goalie and fast forwarding his training. 2) Askarov got to work with Mitch Korn, Premiere NHL Goalie coach, something the Sharks havent had since Strelow 3) the sharks already has a Edstrom in Bystead, and plenty of Chronas.
I think you nailed it, Brodie. Maybe not immediately, but there is a lot of reason for optimism for the future of the Sharks. Granted, there's a ton of potential and a lot of ducks have to line up. But for the first time in a long time, San Jose has so much young depth they can afford to miss a little. Being able to throw everything at the wall and seeing what sticks is a great problem to have, and something San Jose hasn't been able to do for quite some time now. Color me optimistic.
I wanted us to draft him or trade for him in that draft; I’m beyond hyped and so stoked for this upcoming season! I’m also excited for you to have something happy to look forward to after this As season.
Wow, from all accounts this guy is clearly the best goalie prospect out there and although not a guaranteed star, Sharks fans should be excited about this move. I was really critical of Mike Grier 2 years ago, but since then he has really turned things around. IMHO he has built the foundation that will help return the Sharks to relevance, perhaps faster than expected. I'm not expecting much this year, but we shall see how things go this season. Let's go Sharks!
Admirals fan here. He has been great in the regular season the past two seasons. Playoffs, he has struggled. Maybe he gets a pass his rookie season, but Grosenick had to step in and save the day this past season. Either way, he does have personality, and you'll love him in San Jose. I was going to make a joke about San Jose not having to worry about Asky's playoff performance, but I'll resist. Oh, wait.
@Searles007 I don't know. He has the right kind of attitude/confidence in himself to handle the pressure well. Expectations of the Admirals have been really high the past couple of seasons, so there's definitely pressure. He did have a couple of really good playoff games in his 2nd year, but was kind of inconsistent. He's still young, and I don't think he'll always have these playoff struggles.
A team can have the best prospect pool, but if the AHL development and NHL coaching staff are not sufficient enough, then a top prospect pool can be misguided/wasted. Who is the Sharks affiliate at the AHL level? Kings/Panthers are considered up there in terms of top prospect pools.
@@dmonsef Right now? the Kings and Panthers are absolutely no where near the top prospect pools in the league. Currently Montreal has a very good prospect pool, as well as the Ducks, though many of their prospects have graduated to the NHL. Seattle has some extremely underrated prospects as well
@@andystover1013 My bad. I know Panthers/Kings were recent top prospects pools. That all changes once those prospects become regulars with their respective NHL teams.
So far so good for Grier. Building a solid group of forwards . It can be a slow slog. The Sharks were a mess. The Askerov trade is about options. San Jose has Vanacek and Blackwood as UFAs after this season. They are a tandem of backup placeholders. If either of The Sharks' starting tandem falters, Askarov gets playing time in San Jose next season. Soros has signed an 8 year extension in Nashville, so Askarov was blocked. All things willing, he is the starter after next season.
Great breakdown, Brodie. I believe Askarov won't have a problem shuttling back and forth between the Barracuda and Sharks. San Jose's two other goalies are UFA's next season, so Askarov can step in and be #1. That is a better scenario, than having zero chance for 9 seasons, behind Saros. This one and the next 8 of his extension. The Sharks won this trade long term. Saros' 8 year extension starts in his age 30 season, and runs through age 37. Likely a contract, where the back end, years 6 through 8, will be downhill. The Sharks have put themselves 2/3 years ahead, faster,by acquiring Askatov. In 3 seasons, with the new talent, the turnaround will be moving up into playoff contention.
Blackwood can be injury prone and only signed for this upcoming season. Vanecek has struggled since being traded by the Caps, and he is only signed for this upcoming season. I could see Askarov quickly moving ahead of Vanecek, who seems to now be an overpaid backup goalie.
This is a great move. I think the goal for next year is to have the young studs show they belong and be exciting enough that free agent Dmen will want to sign here lol
What a steal this is as a trade which I think the Preds are going to regret, this offseason has been great for the Sharks and my personal opinion is the rebuild is on the right tracks
Pred here. Can the Sharks leadership handle a highly emotional Binnington/Hextall type of goalie that atm appear immature as well? Barry clearly could not, and this last untimely cry clearly pissed him off. Barry likes his quiet finns that keep their chin down and act like team players. What this dude not mentions is that Asky choked in both playoffs for the Admirals and in both cases lost his nr 1 spot. He was a clear contributor why Admirals didnt make deeper runs, clearly dissapointing. Might also been to Barry’s dislike and the reason why Wedge was brought over from Dallas. Barry apparently ranked Asky as low as nr 4, because Lankinen was the preferred nr 2 but he turned out a bit too expensive(still UFA) So while the rest of the league was very hyped on Asky, Barry in win now mode clearly evaluated him ‘not nhl ready’. Lets see how this pans out for him in Sharks
You can say the same for Saros, in his time in Milwaukee. He had that monster season, like 38-9, and the Admirals didn't make it to the Calder Cup Finals, either. You also have to remember, that the Admirals faced Coachella Valley this past season, who were stacked offensively. Milwaukee did pretty good to hang with them. Not to mention, Milwaulee went on that long undefeated streak, threatening the Norfolk Admirals record, and Askarov was a big part of that!
We won’t know until it happens but Grier just brought in vets who are good character guys. Tofolli, Wennberg, Ceci. Along with some good AHL vets. So at least pieces are in place to try
@@meddyven I aint saying that Askys regular seasons were not great - they were clearly fantastic. All I am saying and questioning is his readyness for NHL behind an abysmal D(hopefully improved somewhat by MG this summer).
I have to say Trotz finalized(Poile started it by wrongfully drafting a Russian goalie with the #11 pick, when he should have drafted a forward) in messing this one up, so mark it up as a rookie GM partial mistake(because the situation could have been handled better). This has the potential to be a Flyers Bobrovsky mistake all over again. Regarding Trotz, from his Caps coaching experience dealing with Russian players(let's be honest, can be a challenge), he didn't seem to have a lot of patience dealing with Askarov. The damage was done, Askarov wanted out, and he was traded. Only time will tell if the return value was good or not. Just like to add, David Poile set this goalie prospect mess in motion years ago. He should have drafted a forward with that #11 pick. I think there are times when you should draft best player available, and in this case not draft a goalie when it was already a team strength. Other teams in the past like the Devils(Brodeur), Rangers(Lundqvist), Caps(Kolzig), etc. didn't draft a higher pick goalie when they already had a long term goalie in place. Preds went through this before with Pekka Rinne/Juuse Saros, but the timing timing/transition was better planned. With Saros signed for another 8 years, Trotz would be smart to not put more emphasis drafting a #1 type goalie until 4/5 years from now(pending the Preds draft position when that time comes).
It's very high risk, high reward considering how hard it is to predict goalies development. In therms of the return, I would have preferred giving up a slightly better prospect like Bystedt or Bords instead of Edstrom; and then instead of the somewhat protected VGK 1st, I would have preferred they give up their 2025 2nd with conditions to upgrade if Vegas makes the second round. I do believe that if Vegas has the injuries they had last year again this year, they're MUCH less deep to fill those holes and there's potential to be a similar collapse to the Sharks in 19-20. With that said, even if that were to happen, that would just double the Sharks chances for a lottery win given they get the higher pick between their own and Vegas' pick.
Andersen would not be a good pickup if available. He's too much injury prone and has shown to falter in high playoff pressure games. Wouldn't want a goalie like that mentoring a high prospect goalie. Also the fact, Andersen would want to compete with another playoff team, and not a team in a rebuild phase.
This attempt is a lot better than no attempt at all. I would feel much better about the trade if Las Vegas makes the playoffs and the pick isn't a top ten pick LOL. I wouldn't mind if the Sharks drafted another goalie next year or the year after (not in the 1st round)
Good analysis Brodie, but with prospects it is so hard to verify their real value and who won the trade in the long run. Sharks never tried out Edstrom, so we really don't know his value as NHL player. It is good for all Sharks to remember that prospects in age range from 18 to 23 (first 5 years) are learning to win and lose like pros, and fans can expect too much from such young players. NHL players appear to peak mostly in the 22-32 age range, and only the best players are better earlier or later. Mike Grier has earned the patience of fans with his moves in last year, and with half of the NHL roster new faces, we hope that they find chemistry and build team back into a playoff contender. With goalies, I think NHL teams need 2 great goalies and luck in avoiding goalie injuries also. Sharks have really turned their hard luck story around after tank season last year and maybe more fans will buy tickets to home games to see these new faces test their skills against other teams who also got better in the mean time. With so many new faces, training camp will be more interesting and the big topic will be who plays on what lines and the new power play possibilities. One of the young Sharks should win the Calder trophy for rookie of the year, but will it be Celebrini, Smith, Askarov, or some unknown other?
at which point do we start to get excited? The moves in the last 2 seasons have been questionable at times...But looking at the team today, It seems 3-4 years from now this team can once again be a force.
The Sharks are making the rebuild fun. Now we get to watch how the team grows. How eill tge pkayers turnnout? That's always the case. Look at Toronto, lots of talent. Florida made the big trade for Matthew Tzchuck and they won the cup. Enjoy the journey. If the Shark's have a hiccup on the way up, its only a high pick to make them better by draft or trade.
This reminds me of the devils trading for schidner and then missing out on mcdavid and matthews for no reason other then wearing out a goalie ona bad team
Habs are also young team building right way. But remember, NJ, Detroit, Ottawa have had young and exciting teams for the last few years, and Buffalo has tried to do this now for 12+ years.
Habs are hoarding defensemen, I wouldn't call that building the "right way" ... by the time they have a solid core, their best players are gonna be washed or traded lol

NA BRODIE SHARKS WINNING THE CUP THIS YEAR LETS GOOOOOOO
If Blackwood doesn’t step up this season I would
Love to pick up Andersen next year to mentor Askarov
Andersen would not be a good pickup if available. He's too much injury prone and has shown to falter in high playoff pressure games. Wouldn't want a goalie like that mentoring a high prospect goalie. Also the fact, Andersen would want to compete with another playoff team, and not a team in a rebuild phase.
Blackwood stepped up already. He carried the team for most of last year, as bad as we were
This attempt is a lot better than no attempt at all.
One of the young Sharks should win the Calder trophy for rookie of the year, but will it be Celebrini, Smith, Askarov, or some unknown other?
good point on edstrom... could turn out to be great player too. vegas knows how to pick them
We have all the pieces in place now. Time for just allowing time to pass so the team's next generation can develop.
This trade is actually turning the sharks future from an Atlantic sleeper shark to atleast a Mako if not somthing more terrifying and aggressive
at which point do we start to get excited? The moves in the last 2 seasons have been questionable at times...But looking at the team today, It seems 3-4 years from now this team can once again be a force.
What a steal by the Sharks. Askarov is basically a left-handed version of Andrei Vasilevsky
Can someone win GM of the year before the season starts because GM Mike Grier would be the winner
Huge trade by Grier ....... he will be awesome
Why is there a Brewers logo on a hockey jersey?
same owners, i believe?
Goslie!!!!
Just keep Nabokov away from him
