    Leave the two vertical fins - they look cool - 50's styling :) You could use the space where the motors were to put some running lights.

    Ask the hang glider pilots at Crestline soaring for " broken aero down tubes".
    These will be 2-4 foot long sections of thin wall, aluminum aerofoil tubing.
    Use this material to make strong and light vertical sections for your hydrofoil and rudder assemblies.
    Use another section for the horizontal wing section and add a thin and narrow aluminum bar section to the trailing edge of the hydrofoil and the rudder sections across the entire span to increase the cord.
    You might also consider a mechanism the allows the hydrofoil to lay close to the underside of the hull in the retracted position; with the vertical supports passing through collars that are a fixed to the either side of the boat.
    For foil operation; push the vertical supports down through the collars to extend the foil assembly and secure the upper ends with a push pin.
    If you wanted to "get fancy" you could add a pair of synchronized electric lead screws to the vertical supports to lower or raise the foil assembly "on the fly"

    Perhaps shorten the foils and cant the wings out left and right so you have a V to ride on like a dihedral? Perhaps that would give you a little more stability?

      My understanding is V foils are much less efficient than T foils..

      @@timtravelnomad they are but you're working with rotational moments that get worse and worse the higher out of the water you get. Think of it like a wing in the air. You want an ultra stable plane you introduce dihedral, and in extremes polyhedral. Whilst you do get more spanwise flow on the foil with dihedral, you also get improved roll stability. You'll see an awful lot of older and more modern foiling boat designs riffing on the dihedral foil design (more like a big W than a V but the effective forces for lift and stability are the same). I mean you can try to copy the America's Cup AC75 technology but then they have millions behind them and massive fluid dynamics simulation capability.

      @@steveobhave it seems to me from previous craft made by this team, that they already have foiling stability solved (at least on small craft) using Ardupilot. They demonstrated stable flight with ardupilot controlling actuators on each of a trifoil design.. even with the ability to adjust roll angles from the remote.. all on Tfoils. E.g they could stably fly along with the foil at a constant height, and a constant roll angle (tilt left, tilt right etc)

    Nice video! 3:20 I recommend buying or building a smokestopper that limits current above a chosen Amperage. It has saved many of my Multicopters and Wings.

    Pretty sure you want V shaped foils that loose lift as they exit the water. Look at the foiling sailboats for inspiration.

    Criminally underrated channel. A suggestion for the Boat: consider using toroidal propellers to try and reduce vibrations which will wear on your parts quicker.

      You know that toroidal propellers are not a magic bullet right? They can be better in some circumstances but not all. In this case, he needs to make them himself which is is a project on its own. And also this project might not even benefit from them.

    I would use 1 layer chop strand, 3 or 4 layers 1708 biaxal cloth, corecell foam core. Cover with Nylon Peel Ply for a smooth finish. Insert g10 in the foam core for mounting or pivot point blocking. Not cheap but it will never buckle. Cool stuff thanks for the video!

    This is AWESOME.
    Some Hydrofoils are built with near solid alloy blades and wings as the water beats them at the higher speed and introduces very high forces.
    A one piece V shaped wing for the front will also give it self balancing effect,
    as one tip leaves the water so does its flying effect and the deeper side then corrects it again.
    Also the front can be fixed with some fine tuning then set and forget,
    with the lifting direction control at the rear also connected to a small float type trailing rod from the front to auto level the boat.
    Looks like you have enough power to make a water jet setup , intake is at the base of the rear fin channeling up to the jet pump then directly out the back
    this will also look AWESOME when it's flying.

    Awesome video as always.
    However, to be honest, I'm a bit relieved that it didn't work right away.
    We've been building manned electric hydrofoil boats (but solar-powered) at our university for several years now, and in the design process we often decided against the manufacturing methods you used for the first prototype, because of because they are simple but most likely difficult to process reliably for the high demands on maximum load, stiffness, etc..
    So for me it's rather good to see that our assessments were apparently correct.

    Please always add a strong metal cage around propellers, even if the propellers are made of plastic or they are under water. Those can definitely take off a finger and can even end your life if you fall backwards or in the water and the propellers hit your face and neck. It isnt difficult to mistakenly fall over or backwards in a small boat. Please stay safe with your builds

    Hey! You need a seaplane-like hull with step, or maybe just a not so flat floor: now boat generates too much drag and prevents you from getting up from water.

    This a great learning iteration. Much was accomplished.
    Repositioning the batteries forward, or adding a rock should correct if there is a CoG issue. This much easer to do than moving foil attachment points. I don't thing the CoG was off (much, if at all). The high pivot point for controlling wing foil pitch foils results in a large travel arc. This forward/aft movement of the foil wings cause the foil to not be aligned with CoG, amplifying control effects.
    The idea of using a larger fix foil with smaller control wings is a good one. Before replacing the air motors with a water motor, it may be worth testing just a redesigned main foil wing. Making fewer major changes will allow you to better see the effects each change contributes. Multiple baby steps, vs. complicated long jumps.

    Gotta say i'm glad to see you're willing to use a $0.05 balloon that you mod in seconds rather than spend an hour and all the resources to print something; it's a failing of a lot of crafters these days that wanna to straight to CAD and 3D printing when a balloon will do the job better in every way...

    I can't wait to see this go further. my first thought was the thrust line is about a meter above the lifting surface and the drag line, which can only lead to instability. but you are addressing that with the water prop which is also a lot safer.

    Like others have said the front foil could be a V shape BUT make it so as the craft lifts the tips of the foil come out of the water , this means that side will gradually lose lift and the other side will self level if it is more immersed , this should keep it ultra stable and as the craft lifts the drag will reduce making it faster and easier to drive forward

    You need a bit of dihedral on the main foils. It always tilts to one side until th CG gets out of the projected surface.

    You need to add positive V angle (if you look to front projection) to wings like civil aircrafts., so your wingtips has to be upper than root of the wing. Positive V angle make it self leveling

    Your foils look to be 3 times longer than optimal, only just clearing the water with the hull may ad the benefit of some sort of ground effect adding to the lift experienced by the boat as a whole.

    Make the motor trimmable and you might be onto it, you also might want to look at a sea-vee hull or even a stepped hull like a sea plane, you need to break the low pressure under the boat to get out of the hole more smoothly.

    As i watched i was like "man, these foils are really thin, hopefully they dont brake and they better be full carbon." Turns out my gut feeling was right 😅 i would probably have considered using existing foils from kitesurfing. Also, i get the idea of controlling the front foils, but is it really necessary? I mean the goal here seems to be in control of the height of the boat above the water. But wouldnt it be enough to just have some vertical rudder in the back to have pitch authority? Just like in Planes? Or Kitefoils? (Well they dont have rudders but pitch authority is acquired by pitching the board as a whole). Anyway i love your projects and dedication, even though it might be a little overengineered sometimes, which actually makes it even more interesting 😂 Keep it goin 🤓

    your hydrofoils on the left and on the right should be slanted at a 35 degree angle to ensure balance when turning and when the boat is up and foiling aswell as trying to keep a fixed speed while attempting to get it up of the water just a suggestion

    Check out the foils of the current Americas Cup boats. The pivot into the water rather than rotate.
    Also, these sail-rockets have only TWO foils down most of the time.

    Firstly that looks like so much fun and it was so nice to see it rise out of the water. 😀
    It would have been interesting to know how far away it was heard, I'm guessing a mile.
    But now you're going to drive it from a underwater prop is there enough strength in the stern of the boat to hold the torque from the thrust as well as the lift? 🤔
    I suppose it's out with the calculator again. 🥴👍

    Are those 80mm drone motors with 28 or inch props? Beastly. Love the sound. Must make a lot of static thrust tho switching to a strut drive will save headaches and be so much safer. Cheers. Nice build :)

    The Gyro should be install in the middle of the point of lift (CG) and center of mass (MC).

    I think fixing the foil problem is all you should do first. Maybe add some fan shrouds to help you feel safe. Also maybe some big Dayton style fan blades.

    Incidendally, I have the same (or very similar) EV battery and want to power a chainsaw with it. But I have trouble finding the fitting 300kv motor to get 12000rpm from the 44V pack.
    Would you mind sharing your components? BMS, ESC and motors?

    as there are many ready to use foils availible ( mostly for wingfoiling ) i wouls suggest to use at least the mast of the commercial ones as they are far more durable (aluminum extrusions)

    I'm going off-topic with this, but whatever happened to the video entitled "Flying Wing with B-2 Bomber Style Controls (Arduplane)", of April 7, 2021. I saw an article online about it, went to the link and found it was taken down. Can you re-post it or detail why it was taken down? I thought the idea of going rudderless with Arduplane was interesting but can't find the video, even on the Wayback machine. Thanks.

    Fiber epoxy laminate is strong in tension, not so much in compression, I believe. Any chance to make the core of your foil stems out of metal or wood?
