    What I remembered and found useful in the video:
    1. That part 0 exists and should be recognized and is definitely worth practicing. It's useful to role-play it several times.
    2. I found it pretty helpful to first elicit natural answers from the class and then get your students to extend it in order to meet IELTS criteria better, by giving reasons and supporting by examples. Also, we should give our students a list of cohesive devices and linking words.
    3. In part 2 it is advisable to brainstorm ideas rather than start right away. One method that I enjoyed was the "question method" in which students make several more questions for every IELTS sub-topic in part 2. Another thing that I've been overlooking is making notes, we shouldn't only encourage our trainees to make them, but also teach how to do it, with further checking of their notes. Several words for every point are a must.
    4. It's also a great piece of advice to help students find parts in which they could use particular grammar. I think I will also encourage my students to use 2nd conditional in the introduction. Another useful tip is to have a checklist of grammar structures that could make a student's speech more advanced and involving others to check whether those were used is also worthwhile.
    5. After a person has finished speaking it's quite a good idea to get their partner to paraphrase and summarize what has been said.

    Thanks for this video, it's very useful. I personally have 15 years exp teaching but not once have I talked about an IELTS test, so now that I'm going to try teaching classes on it soon, I find it a bit intimidating, lol. By the way, you didn't put any links to the videos you mentioned. Maybe you can add them to the description? I (and by the sound of it, many others) definitely would have been watching more of your videos if there was a clickable link for them somewhere. Anywho, thanks again for this info.

    Hi Phil, What extra certifications/credits does an English teacher need to teach IELTS students? Or is it a matter of being fluent with the course content?

    • @TheEnglishGrind
      @TheEnglishGrind  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my case, there wasn't any special training needed. I have a university degree and a CELTA and had taught the odd examination class before I applied for my current job. Honestly, I blagged it a bit in the interview.
      I think the most important thing is to have some sort of TEFL qualification and to be as familiar as you can be with the exam. Schools also quite like to have former or current IELTS examiners, but you need to be very careful about any conflicts with your contract.

    • @pisceanbee1913
      @pisceanbee1913 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheEnglishGrind Thank you, Phil. If you have a degree in English, is a TEFL still needed even though you are a native speaker? 🙏

    • @TheEnglishGrind
      @TheEnglishGrind  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pisceanbee1913, In fact, to be an ESL teacher I would say the TEFL is more important than the degree. It's a real craft and even a basic TEFL qualification would be useful. However, in many countries, such as Taiwan, you cannot get a work visa to teach without a degree. So, that is why I included it. You can do a TEFL online these days and I have my recommendation here: theenglishgrind.com/tefl-training/

    Thank you so much for your informative videos . I really understood so so many things from them it's so helpful. Also I do have a question, my recruiter told me to do a research about how to teach IELTS and TOFEL and tell him after if I can do it or not. For me I do believe that I can but I'm not sure if I'm qualified for it because I do have BA in English and CELTA but I didn't do TOFEL yet . In your opinion is it enough to provide good lessons or I have to take more time to prepare myself for such new experience?! Thank you in advance. Hope you see my comment😅 🙏🙏

    • @TheEnglishGrind
      @TheEnglishGrind  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, when I started teaching IELTS lessons full-time a few years ago I didn't know much about the exam. I had nearly 10 years of experience teaching English, and I think that was what was important. I think that if you are a proficient English teacher then you can quickly pick up IELTS or TOEFL exam strategies over a couple of weeks.
      It really depends on what your school or students want from you. For me at the school I worked for, it was all about how to take the exam and less about improving a student's English level. I had a few weeks where I felt all at sea, then once I was more familiar with the exam structure and tasks it was much easier.
      So, don't be intimidated, and rest assured you can definitely learn on the job!

    • @sanaemahboub1172
      @sanaemahboub1172 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see your point . Thank you for sharing it really helped me to have a clear idea what I'm going to do. But still I do want to ask about your opinion since your an experienced teacher and I would highly appreciate your guidance.
      I didn't mention in my first comment that I don't have experience. I just graduated last year and got my CELTA this year so I do think even I'm proficient in English it won't help to provide lessons that students are waiting from me. That's why I want to focus on doing normal sessions to practice what I studied and master it and at the same time to gain experience in teaching English. And at the same time I'll start working myself and get familiar with IELTS tests , scoring system etc ...
      Do you think that is a good start for me as a not experienced teacher or I have to accept this challenge and go for it ?!
      Thanks in advance Phil much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

    Please let me know if this rough lesson plan is spot on or not. Timings only given where mentioned. I'd guess around a 60 minute lesson.
    PART ONE
    1. Board a few questions (with answers) relating to home and work/study. (5 mins)
    2. Group speaking activity where students find a partner to ask at least one question off the whiteboard (WB) 'list' (5 mins)
    3. Common error correction from activity
    4. Pair work for students to answer a list of questions (10 mins)
    5. Common error correction
    PART TWO
    1. Teach either story/question method notetaking on WB
    2. Pair work for students ask each other. Each listens for common errors/grammar structures
    3. Second pair work using a different prompt. Each then paraphrases their partner's answer.
    4. Third pair work using a different prompt. Each asks a short follow-up question based on 2 min answer just given.
    5. Common error correction by teacher at suitable points or at end.
    PART THREE
    1. Elicit a response to a first question on the WB. Together alter structure to 'fix' the answer to adjust to a format. Repeat a few times.
    2. Group speaking activity where students find a partner to each ask at least one question off the WB 'list' (5 mins)
    3. Common error correction from activity
    4. Pair work for students to answer a list of questions (10 mins)
    5. Common error correction
