- The Flix Reservoir is located in the region of Ribera de Ebro, in the province of Tarragona, Cataluña.
This project will remove more than a century of toxic waste pumped into the River Ebro, originating from industrial activity in the surrounding area. The cleaning process involves the removal and treatment of sludge in order to return the river water to its natural state.
This project, classified as a matter of general, priority and urgent interest, responds to the principles of the A.G.U.A. Program (Actuaciones para la Gestión y Utilización del Agua [water use and management projects]). This program includes projects to improve water management and supply in line with existing and future needs linked to sustainable development practices.
The first stage of the project was to create a protected zone by building a 1.3-km double wall to separate the work area from the rest of the River Ebro. The zone was further protected by a secant pile wall along the right-hand side.
The second stage is to remove around 960,000 m3 of sludge contaminated by accumulated metals, organochlorine compounds and radioactive elements found at depths of up to around 150 metres. The sludge will be removed through ecological dredging and treated in the plants that have been set up in the area.
Treatment consists of wet classification of the materials, where they are separated in order to begin the mud dewatering process.
All water extracted during the dredging and the different treatments will be treated in a water treatment plant before being reintroduced into the protected zone. All material will finally be transported to a landfill that has been constructed especially for this project.
The project includes a range of complementary works such as the installation of an emergency supply system for towns located downstream from Flix. This system is designed to mitigate the risk of pollution and to protect the Sebes nature reserve, located on the other side of the plant.
