It is important to note that Fanta in europe is very different from fanta in the USA, so you won't get this flavor if you mix it yourself in the US

Fanta in Europe contains actual real orange juice, however the percentage vary among different countries from about 3% to 12%. Fanta in US is toxic sugary liquid

I've never had the chance to try Spezi, but I have tried Fanta from different european countries and i can say that @Skyl3t0n is telling the truth. It varies radically from country to country, even within Europe.
But I have to raise the flag this time, and suggest everyone try the orange Fanta from Spain. You can even see the difference in density in the orange pulp at the bottom of the bottle.
I also liked the one from Greece quite a lot, very sweet

I'd say "Spezi" is one of the most popular non-alcoholic beverages in Germany. It's one of the cases where the name of a certain product from a certain company became used for a whole product range. The beverage's official name (if there is any) is "Cola-Mix", but people usually just order a "Spezi".
If I'm not wrong, the one you're testing in this vid is the original and thus namesake (and also one of the best tasting in my personal opinion). Another favorite of mine would be the "Spezi" from the Paulaner brewery in Munich, who are one of the few other companies who also call their product "Spezi" (there even was a lawsuit against them a couple of years ago).
Coca Cola have their own Spezi, it is named "Mezzo Mix" (but it is a bit too sweet for my taste) and another noteworthy brand would be "Schwipp Schwapp" which belongs to Pepsi.

I'm glad you like Spezi. - Coca-Cola here in Germany makes a similar product to Spezi, it's called Mezzo-Mix.-
Germany, with its 84 million inhabitants (equivalent to a quarter of the US market), is a highly competitive market.
So, next time, try Fritz-Kola or Fritz-Limo (different flavors) from Hamburg, or also from Germany, this time from Cologne: Afri-Cola and its Bluna ;-)
Coke or Pepsi is not as dominant in Germany as one might think, there are also Red Bull products from Austria, and the German discounters Aldi/Lidl/Penny/Norma also offer their Cola-Soda products.-

I did a mix of coke and fanta or whatever orange soda they had, it wasn't exactly the same as back home, but still tasted good enough.

But regarding Cola... Coca-Cola does it best... perhaps not the modern US variety, but European with regular sugar or the Mexican cane sugar ones are difficult to compete with... and the zero sugar ones, like Pepsi Max and Coke Zero... nothing compares.

Spezi is its own type of drink in Germany. If you want to try the Coca Cola version, its called Mezzo Mix, but there are versions of this from all kinds of producers including beer companies as Krombacher, or Paulaner! Other noteworthy names are Schwip Schwap, Cola Mix and Mischmasch from Fritz Cola.
You can find types of Spezi everywhere here and its just the superior type of drink! My favorite is the Paulaner version. ;)

(I'm sure other countries have it too, but i'm biased) Lemon one is good, but other flavours are also nice. It's a non-alcoholic beer + juice combo that REALLY hits just right on hot summer days when you gotta drive, and unlikr other "nonalcoholic" beers that still have trace amounds of booze in them, this is actually 0.0% alcohol content. People sometimes call it "the bicycle beer" here because you can drink as much as you want and still ride a bike just fine without any issues with your ballance. I think that you would like it.

Spezi is just a mix of Cola and Orange Soda. It is a german drink, but especially popular in Bavaria where the company is from. Growing up in Munich, I'm used to ask for Spezi when i ask for a Cola/Orange Mix (since there are other mixed Sodas like that, for example Coca-Cola's MezzoMix). The brand name is synonymous with Cola/Orange Soda in Bavaria. The name itself is also a bavarian term, in our dialect it basically means "friend" ;) Very, very popular. If you go to a beergarden and don't want to drink alcohol or beer, you'll most likely drink a Spezi (or Apfelschorle, a mix of sparkling water and apple juice).

Special in Austria we often mix beer with orange or Lemon limonde (1:1) and this is realy very, very good and has not so much alcohol in it. We call it "Radler" (a german word fore a cyclist). The home made version is just cola and orange lemonade mixed. Like for example coke + Fanta (European Fanta -> which is a very different drink, just google the color difference alone). That what they usually do, when you order Spezi in Restaurants. Mix Coke + Fanta roughly 50:50.
It's strange that neither Coca Cola, nor Pepsi sell their "Spezi" in the US, given the size of the market there. Because in Germany both make ready bottled Spezis (Mezzo Mix = Coca Cola, Schwipp Schwapp = Pepsi Co). Most popular brand is probably Paulaner Spezi (from the Paulaner Brewery). The one you had, marketed as the "original Spezi", I've actually never had. It seems to be more common in the South, it's not in any Supermarket or Drinks market in my Area in the North.
But you get a Spezi version from pretty much every soft drinks brand, plus quite a few Breweries. Other common ones are Fritz-Kola Mischmasch, Afri Cola Mix, Sinalco Cola Mix etc. And pretty much all store brand soft drinks have a mix variety as well.
My favorite German Lemonade btw. is Anjola. Which is probably a bit too niche to be available in a US store and even pretty uncommon in Germany. Pineapple + Lime Lemonade. A cold one of those is pretty much my favorite (non alcoholic) summer drink.

Theres nothing wrong with it at all, but its a little strange to us if we would buy an already mixed drink in a bottle or can where "Spezi" is written on it... Because this wasnt a thing for a long time.
Younger people from Austria or Germany are most likely already used to it enough, so i guess its normal for them, that this is a thing.
I also can totally understand if people from other continents or countries rather buy a "original" Spezi from a special market.
In reality this type of Spezi isnt more original than just mixing (something like) Fanta and Coke together yourself tho.

  • @thalamay

Most sugar in Germany is made from sugar beets which is very similar to cane sugar. I'm not sure what is used in those sodas, but sugar beet seems a good guess. As for Cola Flavours, there is typically way less in Germany than in the US. But mixing Fanta and Coke is extremely popular. Spezi is a brand name, but it became ubiquitous for the whole Cola+Fanta mix.
Now, it is important to note that Fanta in Europe is VERY different from Fanta in the US, so you won't be able to get the same experience. Also, I'm fairly certain that Spezi also contains actual orange juice. But I don't know the ratios of course.
As for other Colas, Afri Cola used to be really popular. I think it had its heyday in the 1970s. It's USP was the high caffeine content. It also had less sugar than others. It made a comeback during the late 1990s, but then it was sold and the new owners changed the recipe, reducing the caffeine content and also increased the sugar content, making it taste like an average off-brand product. Predictably, sales fell through the floor and I rarely ever see it in stores these days. I think they reverted to the old recipe since (though I'm not sure), either way, the brand is basically done.
However, as a result of this debacle, other brands came up to fill the void. The most successful of which is Fritz-Kola. That one basically tastes how Afri Cola used to taste and it also has a high caffeine content. Fritz-Kola also sells strange and wonderful other sodas though. Personally, I really like their Apple-Cherry-Elderberry one.

It was registered as a trademark in 1956. Spezi is the original - all others are licensed re-brews; although some might be more successful because they are marketed by bigger companies/breweries.

It's sugar beet, europe usually doesn't grow sugarcane and we also don't use corn syrup all too much especially in sodas as it's more unhealthy than just regular sugar

Pepsi have unfortunately switched over to corn syrup over here in Germany as well a couple of years ago… I literally can’t digest the stuff… after finding out about it and switching away from Pepsi, my digestion issues got better and better… and now, I actively check products for „fructose syrup“ to avoid maldigestion…

For the people in the US you can find "Paulaner Spezi" rebranded as "Paulaner sunset" in most of the states

You should try Vita Cola Original. It's a cola with a little less sugar and some lemon. Lovely, the lemon really brings out the cola flavour. Maybe it is a bit harder to get in the western states because it's originally from East Germany, but bigger supermarkets should have it.

Everyone I know falls in love with the Spezi. From young to old, no matter where they come from in the world. It has never not tasted good. For years, Spezi was actually a generic term for Coke with Fanta or Mirinda. In some parts of Germany it is also called cold coffee. Otherwise there are many competing products, but I personally only like Paulaner (beer manufacturer), MezzoMix or SchwipSchwap. And of course ice cold 😁

I'm from Munich and can give you the following information.
The original SPEZI comes from the RIEGELE brewery in Augsburg.
The large Munich brewery PAULANER acquired a license decades ago to sell a similar drink called SPEZI. There was a legal dispute that RIEGELE lost.
That's why there are two types of SPEZI.

Spezi is a popular German drink made from a mix of cola and orange soda. It was created in the 1950s by the Riegele Brewery in Augsburg, Germany, and they trademarked the name. Over time, Riegele licensed the "Spezi" name to other companies, including Paulaner Brewery, which produces its own version called "Paulaner Spezi." While other brands sell similar cola-orange mixes under generic names like "cola-mix," Paulaner sells a version in the U.S. called "Paulaner Sunset," which has a similar taste to the classic Spezi. You should try the paulaner version. It has some little differences. I would say it's more fruity. Drink it all the time.

Here in Sweden, Cola with orange taste was a fad during the 80s. It was usually called "black orange". IIRC even Coca-Cola sold their own Black Orange, which predictably tasted like Coca-cola mixed with Fanta.
Fun fact: if you do try mixing Coca-Cola with Fanta, you'll find that it has to be like 70-80 % Fanta before it starts tasting anything except Coca-Cola. 🙂

Once in an Restaurant in Poland I ordered a glass, a small Bottle Coca-Cola (in Poland Pepsi is very common) and a small Bottle of Fanta. The Waiter came back and after I mixed both in the Glass, he presumed:" You are german!" With a big smile I answered:"Damn right!" 😊👍

shpay-tsee ;) Honestly, I can´t say if it is popular in all of Europe, but there is a popular drink from Coke itself called "Mezzo-Mix". So they are riding the wave, but it´s by far not as popular as coke, fanta, sprite. And I am not sure if it isn´t only a thing in German-speaking Europe.

Do you know that when you drink from a bottle you can't smell what you drink? But to really enjoy the taste, you should always drink from a glass. What I find even more weird is when people drink beer from a can. This completely distorts the taste. Fun fact about Spezi which is a mixture of coke and orangeade (like Fanta): Because of the color - that you only see when you put it into a glass - it is also called "Kalter Kaffee" (cold coffee) or "Diesel". Greetings and love from Germany, Sabine

Spezi is very popular here in Germany, but we have other names for Spezi. Cola Mix, Mezzo Mix,Mischmasch or simply Cola Orange.

In the Netherlands we call Cola mixed with Fanta: Diesel!
And another fun fact, Beer with 7up is called: Snow White.
But there is actually a old brand that has it pre-mixed called: Shandy

Mezzo Mix is what coke has, it's Coke and Fanta.
Spezi is from the Riegele brewery in Augsburg, there is also an Energy drink called Spezi Energy, it's awesome.

Both, Coca Cola (Mezzo Mix) and Pepsi (Schwip Schwap) sell their versions of this in and around germany. It never took off anywhere else.

"Spezi", no matter the fabricant, is basically 98% coke and 2% concentrated orange juice.
There's another thing called "Cola-Mix" in Germany, which is literally half coke, half orange Fanta/ any other orange lemonade. Which would also be the result if people mix coke and Fanta themselves.
For me personally, the best Spezi/ Cola-Mix is "Schwip Schwap", because you taste the orange a lot more through the coke. It's really refreshing and fruity. I recommend you try it whenever you get the chance to purchase it in the US or some follower from Germany sends you some via mail!

When I am in the US at a American fast food joint where you can fill up your own cup. I fill the cup with coke and add only a little shot of Fanta. Spezi is basically a mixture of cola and Fanta. Unfortunately the American doesn’t taste like the German Fanta it is much sweeter. But when you add only a little shot of Fanta to your cola it tastes a little bit like Spezi.
