Ted got out of the house one night so Marshall could propose to Lily. That same night he met Robin. Him and Robin both catch feelings for each other at different times. Eventually Ted and Robin date for a year, then they break up. Ted goes on the rebound, gets a drunken butterfly tattoo, and ends up meeting Stella. They fall in love, get engaged, then she leaves him at the alter for Tony. Ted runs into them here and they offer him the job teaching architecture as a peace offering. Ted teaches the wrong class which has Cindy and the mother in it. The mother is cindy’s roommate. Barney and Robin fall in love and get engaged. Ted later runs into Cindy and she tells him about the mother’s band and how they can play at the wedding. Ted leaves the wedding early and meets the mother at the train station. And that kids, is the watered down version of how he met the Mother.
If he doesn’t see tony and stella tony doesn’t offer him a job as a professor, he doesn’t meet that lesbian chick, she doesn’t tell him about the mother’s band and he doesn’t meet the mother.

Whenever the show has these messages, I kind of get teared up. It’s as if your dad is telling you these life lessons, and giving you hope that you’ll find that yellow umbrella person of your own. Just hearing that “Kids...” followed by the lesson: instant nostalgia.
This might be my favourite scene in the entire show, it's just so inviting, so comforting to hear, it's things like this that set How I Met Your Mother apart from every other sitcom or romcom, there's so much depth to it.
Scenes like this are actually what makes this show great, comedy or not it's one of the greatest show I've ever seen .. and yes i loved the ending too , disappointed at the little time they gave to important things but i'm not disappointed at the results. But also scenes like this always makes me wonder how much time Ted spends thinking about those details, I mean he is telling stories happened what 25 years ago?! , like this scene he didn't know back then those little accidents are what's gonna lead him to the mother. All of this makes what Tracey said so true when she told him "I don't want you to be the guy who lives in his stories "

Don't read the rest of my comment if you haven't finished the show. When you think about it, Ted gets his job at the university because of this scene. Which leads him to meet The Mother's ex-roommate, which eventually leads him to hire The Mother for Barney and Robin's wedding.
I liked "The Leap" but this would have been a great season finale so fans would spend time figuring out who approached Ted, before Season 5 premieres. Then again, we needed to see the goat return
