    I remember mocking one of these soloists when I was a teenager. My dad shouted at me, and rightly so. Each and every one of these soloists each year has done something incredible, bold and beautiful.

      My parents came to Canada after WW2, my mother's family having perished in the death camps; my father, who would have loved Stephen Fry, an atheist on humanitarian grounds. Nevertheless, my sister and I were made anglicans. Schools and all. I sang the solo for Once in Royal David's City when I was 8, and I can tell you that it's impossible to get it totally right. And that lovely wash of choir voices cheers one up no end. That was the end of my singing career: my sister became a rock n' roll recording artist -- and Joni Mitchell aside, she got no better grounding than in that choir. Music trumps everything. Merry Christmas, Hanukkah to you all.

      NickSheridanVids I used to be in a Choir when I was younger can’t reach these notes anymore, I used to attend church all the time, I hardly attend now, and no longer sing👌🏻
      I only went into it because my mates did it👌🏻

      World's best choir! Also, I am soooo devastated to hear of the death of Stephen Cleobury. I have been an Anglophile for 25 years, ever since I heard Stephen's (and Sir David's) arrangements for the first time. I also wish I could have met both of them & played my favorite hymn (I Sing the Almighty Power of God, tune FOREST GREEN) on the organ for them. (I have been an organ geek since 1988). The reason I have never visited Cambridge is because I am afraid of flying (the few times I did fly, I suffered from severe barotrauma (ears popping from air pressure)). But for my barotrauma, I would have visited Cambridge a few times in the last 25 years. RIP Stephen, & I hope you & Sir David & RVW are singing *& playing on the organ) every hymn that fits with the tune FOREST GREEN. Thank you for all the beautiful Festivals of Lessons & Carols, Stephen!

      Jesus the Son of God was born in spring, the only time shepherd's are in the fields watching their flocks by night is lambing season, Dec they are down in barns, protected from cold even snow in what was once the holy land. Christ Mass means a funeral service for the death of our Saviour and Our King. You are saying "Happy Death of the Messiah Day" saying Merry Christmas but lo, It Is Finished, amen. Dec 25 celebrates the birth of pagan son gods, holidays are pagan rituals/devil worship, satan deceives the whole world. Look up Vatican hall pic, the pope speaks from mouth of serpent. Jesus is Our Blessed Hope, -some of you- shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free, every knee shall bend, every tongue will confess Jesus is Lord. Beautiful voices, praise God. God bless.
      John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
      1 John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

      I too, as an atheist, have great admiration for english church music, especially christmas carols. Every year on the 24th of december, I go to a calvinist-anglican mass in my city's (Geneva) cathedral. Everytime I and amazed by the quality of the singing and the music, even though it's not king's college. It's probably the only time of the year that the "Cathédral St. Pierre" is full

    Once in Royal David City - what a performance, an angelic voice, great acoustics - all in one sacred place so traditional, so perfected, so emotional yet peaceful, flawless. This is King’s College Boys Choir, known for ages, so esteemed and disciplined, it’s a privilege to belong to. Each year they have a different boy vocalist lead the choir in the most wonderful opening processional “Once in Royal David City”. Thanks to King’s College and the choir master.

    am soooo devastated to hear of the death of Stephen Cleobury.

    What a way to spend an afternoon, eyes tearing up with joy as once again I hear these magnificent lyrics. Amazed that Britains all powerful SJW network hasn't stopped these concerts in one of their destructive expressions of outrage. Surely the B.B.C. could stop these offensive broadcasts. They hate Christianity above all other religious expressions.

    Hard to believe this is Stephen Cleobury's last Christmas at Kings. What a talent. There just HAS to Knighthood on his retirement for someone who has given so much to choral music over the years.

      Benjamin-Hugh Mackay I thought of Sir David Willcocks as a friend even though I never met him. So I was sad when he died. His music made an Anglophile out of me in 1994.

    1. Once in royal David's city
    Stood a lowly cattle shed,
    Where a mother laid her Baby
    In a manger for His bed:
    Mary was that mother mild,
    Jesus Christ her little Child.
    2. He came down to earth from heaven,
    Who is God and Lord of all,
    And His shelter was a stable,
    And His cradle was a stall;
    With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
    Lived on earth our Savior holy.
    3. And through all His wondrous childhood
    He would honor and obey,
    Love and watch the lowly maiden,
    In whose gentle arms He lay:
    Christian children all must be
    Mild, obedient, good as He.
    4. For he is our childhood's pattern;
    Day by day, like us He grew;
    He was little, weak and helpless,
    Tears and smiles like us He knew;
    And He feeleth for our sadness,
    And He shareth in our gladness.
    5. And our eyes at last shall see Him,
    Through His own redeeming love;
    For that Child so dear and gentle
    Is our Lord in heaven above,
    And He leads His children on
    To the place where He is gone.
    6. Not in that poor lowly stable,
    With the oxen standing by,
    We shall see Him; but in heaven,
    Set at God's right hand on high;
    Where like stars His children crowned
    All in white shall wait around.

      Lovely hymn, even though the stable reference is probably wrong. No Jew would live in a stable.

    I wish this song was not contested and recorded on #CelticWoman:- #AChristmasCelebration were Méav Ní Mhaolchatha
    , Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon with harp, Lisa Kelly and Mairead Nesbitt with violin after #TheWexfordCarol finished. Here are the lyrics:-
    Overture:- Mairead Nesbitt with violin, Orla Fallon with harp.
    (VERSE 1)
    (Meav, Mairead without playing violin and Orla with Harp)
    (Meav) Once in Royal David’s city, stood a lowly cattle shed.
    (Orla sings with her harp playing) Where a mother laid her Baby, in a manger for His bed.
    Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child.
    (VERSE 2)
    (Lisa, Chloe, Mairead with violin and Orla with Harp)
    (Lisa) He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all.
    (Chloe) And His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall.
    With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour holy.
    (Refrain) Mairead's violin and Orla's harp plays and choir harmonises
    (VERSE 3)
    (Meav, Orla with harp, Chloe, Lisa and Mairead with violin and orchestra accompanies)
    And through all His wondrous childhood, he would honour and obey.
    Love and watch the lowly maiden In whose gentle arms He lay.
    Christian children all must be, mild, obedient, good as He.
    (VERSE 4)
    (Meav, Orla with harp, Chloe, Lisa and Mairead with violin, choir vocalises and orchestra accompanies)
    For he is our childhood’s pattern, day by day, like us He grew.
    He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew.
    And He feeleth for our sadness, and He shareth in our gladness.
    (Refrain) Mairead's violin and Orla's harp plays and choir harmonises
    (VERSE 5)
    (Meav, Orla with harp, Chloe, Lisa and Mairead with violin, choir vocalises and orchestra accompanies)
    And our eyes at last shall see Him, through His own redeeming love.
    For that Child so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heaven above.
    And He leads His children on, to the place where He is gone.
    (VERSE 6)
    (Meav, Orla with harp, Chloe, Lisa and Mairead with violin, choir vocalises and orchestra accompanies)
    Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by.
    We shall see Him; but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high.
    Where like stars His children crowned, all in white shall wait around.
