Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books.
On this channel, I talk about writing, publishing and creating personal freedom with unconventional business strategies and providing value. My videos are unpolished and a little raw, because we travel full-time and I focus on content, not production quality.

As a pantser-leaning plantser, this year's Escape the Plot Forest had some great tips for flexible, less-detailed outlining practices for pantsers and I feel very fluid when writing, knowing that I have a guide to where I wanna go but I can still consider a number of ways on how to get there.
I feel like having a loose but strategized outline plan really helps me focus more on the writing because I know what I want to write without having to stop and think about what to write...in the act of writing itself.

Your plotting structure is what I used for my last WIP, but I didn't go into that WIP using it. I came across your structure as I was deep in a depressing developmental edit for it and it solved all of the my issues. That WIP was just published on Monday to good reviews. I used this structure to plot and outline my NaNo novel in the two days in between, and it is a solid outline. Already at 10k words for my NaNo and I do NOT foresee a depressing developmental edit come December, your structure here is solid and I recommend it above Save the Cat.

NaNoWrMo project this year is Book 2 in my series. I entered Nov. with 7,200 words and my goal is to do 1,000 words per day, and end teh month with just under 40K words. The goal for NaNo is to get bACK INTO THE DAILY habit.
Book 1 is with the proofreader, and I plan to publish in lat January.

Yes, the drafting process is hard for me, too, which is why after completing my entire scene outline this week, I'll use chatgtp to help me flesh out each scene into a synopsis with what I know needs to happen before using it to generate a rough draft of prose. Then come December, I'll use that rough draft to work in more details, character voice, show don't tell (bc most of the prose ai gives me will need to be rewritten anyway right? It's a rough draft for a reason🤷‍♀️ work smart not hard )
Good luck to you and everyone else who's always dreamed of finishing a novel!

chatGPT is pretty useful for outlining, brainstorming or story ideas. The basic writing is too fluffy/melodramatic for me but with enough of the right training and prompts, it can also make some REALLY good stuff. It doesn't handle structure well, but sometimes I just need a tighter/more dramatic first or last sentence.
