If the Atari-Nintendo deal went through smoothly, then the Atari Famicom (as based on the original 1983 Famicom top-loader, rather than our NES that came out in 1985-86) would really have been black and silver (in line with what the 5200 and 7800 consoles looked like) but not black and woodgrain. But in reality, Atari in the summer of 1983 was already mired in so much debt and oversupply that I believe the deal would never have worked out either way.
I wonder how things would have changed if Atari distributed the Turbografx-16 outside of Japan, I mean they probably couldn't have done worse than NEC right?
I knew about the almost deal between Atari and Nintendo, but I had no idea they had also negotiated with Sega. Who knows how the video game industry would look today if both the NES and the Genesis had been distributed by Atari 🤔
Nice! In this alternate reality, Nintendo and Sega would have just supplied software to these Atari consoles (as they had done before, several early Nintendo and Sega titles shared shelf space for the same console in the early 80s). Nintendo's Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Popeye, Donkey Kong Jr. were ported to various 80s consoles alongside Sega's Zaxxon, Turbo, Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom (they sure loved their 3D type games).
But HAD the deal gone through smoothly, then there may have been no Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda. The 7800 may have still been released though, as it was on the drawing board before Warner Communications unloaded Atari's consumer and home computer divisions (there actually were a few pre-Tramiel-era prototype 7800s).
I hope the TH-cam algorithms gods shine on your channel soon. You put in SO much work and research into your videos! And it's a shame not a lot of people get to see it. Youre unique with your bootleg game/console series and I personally love those...and ofcourse your history videos are all great too.
Grandpa has a Coleco and the wheel, me and cousin would compete while Gramps wrote down the scores. Remember that? Scores! Got the VCS from another Cuzzo when he got the NES for Xmas, me and Dad played for the entire night till 3am. Had a DK 2600 cart licensed by Coleco for the VCS. It had a white shell. Neighbor asked to borrow it and punked me for it. Ah, memories.
Lately I've been wondering: Was the Atari/Nintendo deal a good faith arrangement or was Atari planning to buy the rights to and then bury their competition?
I wonder what it would have been like if Nintendo didn't have such strict control over 3rd party support. There would have been more games from Capcom and Konami for Genesis early on. I remember when Strider came out. My friend was such an avid player of the arcade version that he purchased the Genesis version upon release. I honestly thought Capcom had released it but soon found out that Sega had programmed it as they had done for Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Chiki Chiki Boys I think. It's too bad they weren't able to do more ports like that to steal Nintendo's thunder. As much as I like Nintendo, I always thought blocking 3rd party companies from making games on competing hardware was such a low blow. Business is business I guess. They got a taste of their own medicine in a way when support for N64 dried up because they stuck with cartridges.
If the Atari-Sega deal had gone through, Atari would've done something stupid to fumble the ball at the 1-yard line and the Genesis would've never taken off the way that it did in North America under Sega of America's leadership.
what the actual F*** atari megadrive like i do not even madam. and also midway is warner bros thing of america while bandai or namco is just a Japanese company.
I'm more of who and why did Sega say their system had "Blast Processing"?! And how do they feel about it being a failure in words and effectiveness!!??
Man can you imagine how badly Atari would f-ed up the NES if they had been in control? Half of JPN library we did get would never have come state side Imagine an NES with no Mega Man or Final Fantasy that kinda of level an NES library crammed with Atari dreck low effort games with no thought or imagination Im am very grateful fate had better ideas
@@starlion93that really depends on the game. There are many great Genesis soundtracks, and many of the worst examples used the notorious GEMS driver. In the end, one isn’t really better that the other, they are just different when used to the best of their abilities. SNES has a much softer sound, but has better sampling playback (often Sega games left out samples altogether). The Genesis has a much crunchier sound, which plays better to certain types of games - especially when the FM synth is fully utilized.
i think atari and sega is better because i'm not a fan of sony, mirosoft and nintendo i'm only a fan of sega, atari and bally ascreocade that's my preference but i love all video game companies equally and you realized if it wasn't for atari gaming wouldn't be the way it is today and gaming would not exist the way it is either that's why i thank atari that's just me we can agree or disagree as long you guys are respectful about it by being open minded

but not quite somebody at atari isn't really happy with that idea though.

Sega does what Nintendon’t, but the Phillips CD-I lives forever in our hearts.
it's actually sony vs phillips vs microsoft vs apple vs whatever.

Great content, excellent reporting, insightful perspective

I enjoy all of your videos so much! Thank you, Lady Decade.
Atari passing on the rights to distribute Nintendo hardware was mistake that cost Atari DEARLY!!

your thumbnail just reinforces my theory that woodgrain makes anything look better
i have the exact same theory, and mine, too, was reinforced by the thumbnail

This video was so good. It is criminally underviewed!

Wonderful years that only a few of us would relive again .
Lady Decade!❤❤❤❤❤❤😄
That Atari Donkey Kong box art goes hard.
The Atari Genesis, Atari Entertainment System, Nintendo Playstation, all concepts that would baffle today's single system stans.
We also almost got a Sega Playstation and Sega N64!
Sega leadership were idiots
90s were exciting times.
Would be cool to see a custom nes style Atari with the black and wood grain. And a trip that it played Atari 2600
Nostalgia total

Oh this took me back. If i could subscribe to this channel twice, I would!!
I definitely grew up with nintendo colored glasses on, but I never even heard of the master system and no friends had one
Great Stuff!
Lady Decade is a necessity for gracious living.
Interesting video from a fit bird
Lately I've been wondering: Was the Atari/Nintendo deal a good faith arrangement or was Atari planning to buy the rights to and then bury their competition?
Yeah, sign me up for the wood panelled genesis lol
Another great story. Thanks LadyDecade.

Imagine an atari playstation & atari xbox
Sega genesis for the win😊
yes including megadrive because it was made in 1988 1989 and 1990 respectively worldwide.
I never knew any of this
Sega does what Nintendont
Atari Mega-Drive
again i seriously don't even where did they got this from 8bitdo or is it 16bitdo?
Man can you imagine how badly Atari would f-ed up the NES if they had been in control?

Genesis was just a better name than Mega Drive. It had no drive of any sort at all.
❤️ 😍
❤ING you lady decade. Your Beautiful and I love your voice and depth of content . Thanks x
Nintendo had a lot of relationships over the years. So many bastards consoles😂😂😂😂
Sega goofed and had to give a hefty sum of money to Atari in excuse.
ZX Spectrum wins!

The Sega genesis is better.
