Indulging in those cosy genres you love sounds like a perfect idea - and after all, that’s such an important part of reading! And maybe there’ll be a bit of wtf-ery in some that will provide amusement to help with your current reading situation too (one of the earliest videos of yours I ever saw was your hilarious review of Ritual of Proof. Never forget Claudine d’Anbere! 😂). I look forward to seeing how you go!
There’s a book series that’s really been helping me at times when things have been hard, I hope you don’t mind if I share it with you? I’m almost certain you know of it already, you may have already read them, but if not I can highly recommend James Herriot’s vet omnibuses, starting with ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. There’s so many elements in them that I think would be right up your alley. They are such comforting, lovely reads. Just wanted to throw that out there; they always cheer me up.
I’ve been pretty blessed reading lately I think just because I am coming to a lot of classics very late (my current project is to really dive into all those classic novels and authors I never got around to reading). I thoroughly enjoyed Middlemarch, thought Orlando had some absolutely stunning writing, and finally read my first Dickens! Lame, I know to be so late but I was never really interested before. Picked up David Copperfield and it was one of the most wonderful reading experiences I’ve had. Many authors are really opening up a new interest in the Victorian era for me, which is exciting.

I will be interested to hear your opinion of the Mystery Writer. Years ago, starting in 1978, I have been keeping a notebook where I write down the year, the month and then the book title and author. People think I have read tons of books, but my average through 2023 is 38 books a year. I go in streaks. Don't beat yourself up, just go with it. I had a year where I only read 8 books. I am now retired, so my reading has increased....we will see how that goes.....I have hobbies, maybe to many, but oh well. 😁

Regarding election texts. Blocking the number often doesn't help because they have a pool of numbers they could text from. Replying stop to opt out will add you to the originating company/campaign's internal DNC and should stop all texts from that group regardless of what phone number is in use that day. Also double check your state/county/city's policy on sharing voter registration information. Some survey and campaign lists are pulled from state voter registration.

My reading has definitely picked up now that summer is in full swing. Jan - May I had my lowest reading totals in a good long while. I've gotten back into the swing of things by embracing the fact that I'm a mood reader. I hope doing the same with comfort reads works for you!!

I think your plan is solid. When I got a slump, I binge category romance until I'm feeling like myself again. They're comfort rewards that don't require a lot of brain power but provide a lot of dopamine for me, so they're perfect. I hope you get your groove back soon!

Best Book I read this year was probable Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. Best Sequel was Golden Son by Pierce Brown. Biggest Disappointment was The Only One left by Riley Sager. Biggest Surprise was Firebird by Sunmi.
I'm finding that my comfort genre's aren't bringing me much comfort right now. I thought romance was a comfort genre but I think it's really romance with paranormal, fantasy or sci-fi elements that get back to the plot fairly quickly between sexy times. I'm reading a book now that is contemporary and has had like three chapters of sex and fluff and the plot hasn't progressed at all and I'm quickly losing interest. I've read so much romance this year that I just can't wait for it to be over. I think I just like tension, slow burn, angst and enemies to lovers more.

I am still in my own Midyear freak out. I realized I am not reading fast enough to read all I had planned for 2024. I have been trying to do the 52 Book Club prompts, plus my library book club picks. I wish I could read faster. But, the more pressure I put on myself, the slower I read. I am definitely going to do 2025 differently. 2025 will probably start with whatever I don't finish from the 2024 challenge. I am definitely going to go with a "pile of possibilities" approach for the future. If I lock in my plans, I rebel at the constraints!

Basically, my Midyear Freakout was having the best readingyear in the past decade up until May, then entering a HUGE slump. I think I did manage to turn that around though, as I've completely leaned in to comfort reading and have started a reread of the entire Hercule Poirot collection and have been LOVING it.

Yea! A Mara video! I'm having a good reading year so far (69 books through June - several fantasies for a change from mysteries. I've learned that I'm not a fan of endless, grimdark battles - lol) with the Kate Daniels series being the most enjoyable reads by far. Now, to find more equally fun books! Do you have any further suggestions...? I, too, am looking forward to more Osman. Hallett is on my radar. Thank you for another thoughtful video for us bibliophiles 🙂.

I've started reading Janice Hallett too this year. I haven't read The Appeal yet, but that one is on the maybe pile for this summer. I have a very weird experience with her. When i'm reading them, i generally like them, but i do have issues. The second i finish them, i'm so impressed and i forget all the issues i had (or i can see why things are done the way they are done and can appreciate that) and that's when they become a new favorite. Everything she does just seems so intetional. She also does something i really like, which is using mixed media to create an unreliable narrator.

Publishing is still lackluster this year - everyone is slumping. Some great releases were pushed out in the very beginning of the year (maybe to get those big fiscal sales numbers) but there really hasn’t been anything for the past few months. I’ve even been shamelessly returning lots of things because I’m not losing money to dishonest marketing and quality issues. I’m starting to wonder if it’s impossible to keep up with the youtube grind/algorithm in a normalized post-covid publishing landscape, where it’s not realistic to expect more than one or two great books per month.

I disliked Chain Gang All Stars _with a passion_ . Only finished it because I was reading it for a book club. As a character driven reader, the way the author presented them in the story - giving us the barest bones about every one of them - made me not care about anything in the story. It felt to me like they were used as props, rather than an integral part of the story. Also, the ending went nowhere, imo.
But at least the main audiobook narrator was very good.

I have been in a major reading slump for probably a year, so I totally feel you about wanting to stick to books you know you'll like. For me even sticking with genres I enjoy I'm finding myself doing more critical analyses of the writing than enjoying the story. Especially if the writing or characters are disappointing. 🥱So, so far this year I've had a bunch of DNFs, and I've been doing far more writing. But quite a few of the books you mentioned made it to my TBD list, so maybe I'll have to give them a try. ~Caroline
