My main issue with DT is how the dialogue quality fell off compared to ShB & EW. Story concept of DT is incredible, the execution is what's lacking. And I agree with you. Most of the Scions felt like there were just without any valid reason. G'raha had a good gondola scene in Living Memory and that's honestly the only worthwhile scene with any Scion in DT. Also, Endwalker being a climax being a reason for DT feeling underwhelming is just not true. DT could've stood on its own as an amazing story if executed properly. Hell, HW & ShB both could've functioned as self containted stories in many ways too.

01:29:30 - lmao I 10000% agree with the Viper tutorial quest, it sucked at actually teaching the job. Each ability's tooltip was a fucking paragraph and not the kind of thing that's easily digestible the first time you see it and are playing under pressure. It was actually one of the things that turned me off to the job and I went to picto instead.

what gets me most with DT's fumbling of the Scions is that I *want* a low-Scion-input expac! ShB and EW were great, i as a Scion Enjoyer ate really really well!! but we need(ed) a break from 'em, and DT was almost exactly what I wanted in that regard.
them showing up at the end was fine and I enjoyed that, but their actual execution was weird and clunky throughout. there was nowhere near enough of the twins and especially not enough Krile, they should've been more hands-on in certain zones (ie; Alphy with the Pelupelu, it would've tied back nicely to what he learned after buying Gosetsu's katana!) as our +1 with Wuk Lamat so they could better coney the whole mentorship aspects since we're a character without real agency.
And especially once they all showed up at the end it felt...fanfic-y, for want of a better term, and a specific flavor of fanfic where the author doesn't have the characters' voices and just inserts the pre-written examples in a slightly different context.
Not all of it, to be fair, G'raha's scene in Living Memory was fucking gorgeous, and Estinien was a delight with just the right amount of his inclusion. I really liked Urianger and Thancred mentoring Koana but it lacked a certain flavor, I think in part because Thancred wasn't allowed to be meaner to him for being so ill-prepared for leadership.

That crisis you're talking about may be onto something. I went into the game with very low expectations. A TH-camr I like (play frame) did a lets play and said 'by the way ALL OF THIS IS FREE' and I was like 'you know what sure why not, there's a lot of free stuff, I won't lose money testing this out.' So I was very surprised by how big a leap up Shadowbringers and Endwalker was, but I never expected that to be the norm. So I was never disappointed cos none of the game was terrible but I never expected it to be a peak gaming experience either. I just wanted to have fun with the cool people I met along the way, and that's what we've been doing. But there seems to be a lot of other people who take this way too seriously and who really need to have other hobbies, read some books, play other games. And if you aren't having fun anymore, thats OK. Do something else.

In regards of the whole quest structure criticism and it being the same it's always been, I can only speak for myself, but I've always been critical of it. I feel FFXIV's MSQ questing experience has always been terrible, and heavily relies on the storytelling to make it enjoyable. Hence why I've always said that to me FFXIV at times feels more like a book than a game, something it shares with another of my favorite games, Planescape Torment.
Speaking of actual books, one of my favorite series is The Liveship Traders from Robin Hobb. It's a trilogy that has gained a reputation for being slow and somewhar sloggish, but I personally don't mind this as long as the payoff is there. FFXIV is kinda similar to me: I wouldn't say playing the MSQ is fun, but the story, ideas and characters made it all more than worth it. When DT dropped the ball with it's storytelling, the boring questing and pacing issues suddenly became impossible to justify. It wasn't worth it anymore.
I guess what I mean to say is that I understand people being critical about it right now in particular, even though the problem has always been there.

A phenomenon I've seen play out while watching people go through the MSQ: they finish the .0 content and think "that was cool," then they finish the real climax in the .3 patch and fall in love with that expansion (Endwalker's unique cycle aside). Defeating Thordan: "That was neat." Ending the Dragonsong War: "This is the greatest story ever told." I don't know if Dawntrail will hit that mark, especially since I'm in the minority who really liked the Dawnservant plot and hated Alexandria, but I'll at least wait to see how it all wraps up before demanding Yoshi-P's head on a platter.

I also thought about this, but if we're being honest the pattern was already broken in Shadowbringers. Not because 5.3 wasn't amazing, but because 5.0 by itself was already considered to be incredible. Many still consider the finale of 5.0 to be the best moment in all of FFXIV.

I started ARR two years ago and I had a better experience with that than I had with DT, the story was a little bland but it was way more consistent in presentation and tone than DT. And one very important thing that made ARR better for newcommers: we knew we had Shadowbringers and Endwalker to look for, and that the story would only get better. Now we don't have something equivalent in DT, what's left is disappointment and not knowing if the next story will be worth waiting for.

We've known for years that even Yoshi P has had hands on experience with the game and many of the team are tight-knit.
The PR responses all feel so disconnected that it feels as if an AI or someone above them gave them a script to read, as if none of them have had a hand in their material or a hand in the community (something that Yoshi P was very well known for, being involved and receptive). This all stinks and it doesn't even feel like a test-drive to see if the community likes the new structure of how FF14 is expected to go moving forward, but rather what is EXPECTED to go moving forward regardless of player feedback (corporate vs community). Story-wise, it's a disaster and their worst to date. It wouldn't be getting so much fresh backlash if they stopped protecting the character Wuk Lamat and Bryer from remote criticism, or trying to defend the story from the obvious numerous errors it made in world building, character development, and absolute dismissal of aforementioned plot points. This hasn't happened with the team as far as I can remember (VAs getting criticism, the usual extreme death threat is no secret and every single one of them gets that treatment), so why NOW? Why specifically protection for THAT VA? Hence my suspicion for corporate forcing the narrative to go a particular direction. There are more problems with what the team's doing and how it's responding than the expansion itself, and that's the worrying part.
They need to distance themselves from the Twitter side and the drama around the VA, potentially re-cast the VA, cut the umbilical cord with their golden cub OC, and move on. In turn I'll move on from FF14 if it ceases to give me reason to stay there, and rehashing old content while dreading what is to come is not healthy for me.

The reality is the devs got too comfortable being at the top, got lazy, took the playerbase for granted YET AGAIN and tried to pull a superficial key dangle with new graphics and good music but no soul or substance whatsoever by completely disregarding the quality in writting and dialogue andin their contempt, they thought that we wouldn't mind as much as we did. They underestimated the playerbase's criteria and thought we would just uncondiotionally accept whatever they felt like tossing at us but to their surprise, people didn't like the taste of mediocrity. It was just another serialized cashgrab product made up of cold corporate decisions, not something they put their heart into. Their problem is that they made it too blatantly obvious to ignore. It is THAT simple.

They glossed over some exciting parts like Valigarmanda that could have had a really exciting arc and then other parts of the Dawnservant quest I felt like I was a tourist - look at why we use llamas, see how we hire goldsmiths...snore. Then the most exciting parts of the storyline are squished into maybe the last 30% of the game. We spend no where near enough time the final sections of the game before it comes crashing to its conclusion. Let alone I found none of the new characters all that compelling right now. I applaud for Yoshi-P trying to lessen the scions’ roles in the story. However, that in turn requires a very strong supporting cast of characters.
In HW, we had Aymeric, Iceheart, and Estinien, with just Alphanaud and Tataru being the primary scions.
In Stormblood, the scions of Lyse and Alisaie were primary, but we also had Goesetsu, Ygiri, Hien, and Raubahn.
In ShB, Gra’Ha and Emet Selch and Uriangier and Thancred and Ryne were center stage mostly.
Endwalker was the full cast, with Krile, which made sense.
Y’Shtola has developed mostly in the patches, which is fine.
In DT, the guest stars were not well written, not well voice-acted, and didn’t stay true to their convictions. Without the Scions there, it fell flat.
Also, we need to kill a scion. I think Y’Shtola might be up sacrificing her life to make travel to the shards possible.

@@davidbernardino8109 I thought that at first, but I think a better suited ending for him would be in a future expansion where he’s being a spy again. He almost got caught before, and perhaps his age is catching up with him. If you want to create a BBEG for a couple of expansions, have them capture Thancred at the end of 7.3 or 7.4. Then we have 8.0 looming with the need to rescue him. It’s a trope used a few times, but perhaps it ends with his interrogation and murder. And perhaps we don’t know he’s dead until the very end.
‘Shtola has been pigeon-holed to familiars and void travel. Once we have a way to traverse the shards, her character arc will feel forced. Perhaps instead of killing her off, they let her go back to the 1st where she studies Ronka. That way she’s there when needed, but no longer part of the crew.
Either way, one needs to die, and it needs to be someone everyone likes.

There’s not sense of worry when the actions are in trouble. The fake emotional crying from streamers at the end of EW was full cringe. Why would anyone thing a scion would die at this stage?
But what if one actually did, and it was well written? What if the WOL had to deal with failure…perhaps not getting to Thancred in time? Now that would get the introspective heart tugs going.

Rollo, why are you bringing up the VA’s personal attributes? The only people I EVER hear or read about that are either TH-camrs or a couple of more progressive leaning gaming journalists. I think it is valid to question if this was THE BEST person that auditioned for the role for the English version considering it’s one of the weaker VAs. If the answer is yes, that’s a problem with SE’s casting direction and marketing. If no, then it’s a valid point to ask if SE felt attributes not associated with voice acting capability belonged in the hiring philosophy for the English version ONLY.
The voice actor for Papalymo in HW was awful, and the character’s story poorly written. The VA for Lyse (and her character’s personality) was mediocre. Even Tataru is starting to get weird and obnoxious in translation from JP to western audiences. But these haven’t had near the screen time as Wuk. Her English voice actor had a struggle in conveying emotion, and the script didn’t help with character development either. Recall that the story for DT was a different writer than ShB and EW, and it shows. When the main character is boring, people check out and let folks know.
I think you do a major injustice to try to broad stroke that people might…*gasp*…disagree with you. I have been around since 1.0. I am playing through the game again with my son on his first character and having a blast watching his first time reactions. I have playlists for 14 songs that I listen to for studying or exercising at times. My problem has nothing to do with some Freudian complex or a hatred of the game at large. My problem with DT is that they swung and missed hard with it with the story. And let’s be real: this game is 100% successful primarily based on the story.
Everyone always says “just get through 2.x and it gets better.” I imagine the same will said be for 7.0. It will have NOTHING to do with anyone’s gender or such, but instead a poor story with poor writing that feels like a slog and not a true adventure with mystery and intrigue and excitement.
