Hey everyone! I just want to say a big thank you for the wonderful response to the last video! You guys have been so nice! I'm about halfway through editing the 4th video (Shadowbringers) at the moment, and should get everything done before Dawntrail comes out. Videos are going up every Sunday at 7PM BST!
Thank you! I can't wait for everyone to see them - especially the ShB one, which is really turning into something I can be proud of. By the way, is that a Link to the Past-inspired profile pic? That's my favourite Zelda game!
I always cry. And then I have to go tell Edmont and wind up crying even harder. The scene is so beautifully written and acted, it breaks my heart. It has echoes of Bernard Hill's excellent 'No parent should have to bury their child' moment in Lord of the Rings.
@@Tolly7249 Seeing this man, who is usually so calm and dignified, just crumble and fall on his knees, is so painful to witness. While my heart hurt after Haurchefant's death, it bled for Edmont in that moment.
To Aymeric's credit, the abyss under Ishgard is supposed to be a dreadful storm of aether that if any mortal were to try and dive in they'd be torn to shreds, and in that moment the eyes were still trying to take over you and Alphy. Literally "best idea at the time". Besides, the summoning of Shinryu was a haunting scene when the Ala Mhigans are slaughtered by Ilberd and his two gods forsaken lackies
57:37 idk if it was just me but I was tense the entire time watching the dinner scene with Aymeric lmao. After seeing Nanamo poisoned and our drink spiked, I was begging to the Twelve that Aymeric's meal wasn't drugged or something
I'm a Gridanian "native", but Ul'dah is where I ended up spending most of my time. I liked the Syndicate being the essential rulers of the state(also the Goldsmithing/Textile industry is amazing.) Dewlala is especially blunt - the context all but says "If Lolorito had ever wanted Nanamo to die, it would have been nothing for him to order it." Ysayle's model being tilted as she walks up is too funny. The sidelong glance your WoL gives the servant pouring wine is also hilarious.
I love how Alphinaud inherited people taking the piss out of him from his father, the two try so hard to be serious, unflinching characters and their friends/ family won't have it xD
A wonderful second chapter to a recap by someone that is clearly a fan that isn't afraid to be honest. Heavensward is an amazing chapter in the Final Fantasy 14 story, but it isn't as flawless as many people want to remember it. Thank you for cheering and trumpting it's victories and being critical and fair with its flaws. I can't wait to see more.
Thanks! I'm actually dreading the Shadowbringers video because I was a little harsh on the whole "time flows differently" stuff. It's still the best expansion IMO but there's still a bunch of awkward contrivances.
On Ysayle, I do agree that we could've used more cutscenes for it, but there's a LOT of time between her seemingly breaking after finding out the truth of what happened at the start of the Dragonsong War and when she showed up at Azys La. Plenty of time for her to pull herself back up and restore her resolve. Again, I agree it definitely needed the cutscenes to build it well. I just think it made sense.
1:12:10 Gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on that one specific point, man. Yda was an absolute treat for me, and a breath of fresh air amidst a crowd of overly-formal, all-business supporting characters. Maybe 'ditzy females' has been done to death in your eyes over the years, but you may notice that ever since Stormblood there's not a single one present here to play the part so the complaint doesn't really hold much water to me within the scope of the game taken on its own. The very best we get as far as levity on the girls' end is concerned is Y'shtola's frequent witty snark or Alisaie's brash sarcasm. Yda for me was pure gold, the one sole source of honest, purehearted, straightforward cheer in a world filled with characters that constantly feel like they're making a conscious effort to take themselves more seriously than they actually are. Sorry Lyse fans, but the moment she took off that mask and dropped her 'act', her character plummeted off of a cliff in my eye and she's never really recovered from that despite having an entire expansion dedicated to trying to make her join the fully-crowded box as yet another one of these 'strong-willed, complex, competent characters that you're supposed to take super seriously and applaud the growth of'. How I long for a powerful goofball. Not even Gosetsu is safe...I suppose I'll just have to take solace in Hildibrand and his ilk.
I'm loving these videos but yeah, there's nothing wrong with having a "ditzy character" even though Yda was never ditzy, she was carefree. My man literally called Yuffie and Rikku "one note" despite the fact they had SO much more going on for their characters *while also being* goofy and carefree. Like did he see Rikku after Home? Has he seen Yuffie in the FF7 Remake Project? I do not agree with that statement at all. Lyse is a downgrade in every way from Yda, and Stormblood just makes that even worse as the story tries to force her where she doesn't belong.
So i know it's not directly stated in game but Yoshi P was asked about Thancred's eye during a Q&A. Basically it was meant to show he had an injured eye but it did eventually heal thus its return to normal later. 100% it could've been better conveyed in the story but that is the official answer per Yoshida
For me it’s how heavenward took a place I hated so much in ARR and made me fall in love with it. Every time I was sent to Ishgard I was ranting about how stupid every single person there was in my fc. But as we all grieved for Haurchefant, I knew that I too was now bound to this wheel of vengeance.
In regards of Y'shtola's eyes, in the Japanese version and other languages, Matoya simply stated that the way Y'shtola sees would use more energy, a.k.a. get tired easily, imagine it as staring at computer monitors look enough but in a fantasy way. It never gets brought back up again because it isn't a big deal originally except in the English localised version.
Properly speaking, Matoya never says it's going to cause some long-term deterioration, even in the localization. The full line is: "I need not tell you that it consumes your very life force to see by sensing the aether around you. Take care of yourself, do you hear me?" People who want to complain about plot holes are quick to claim that it means she's shortening her life span, but that's not how Matoya delivers the line. There's no "Oh, no, my prize student is going die before she gets as old and magnificently cranky as me. We need to do something about this." The air is more, "You're relying on coffee and all-nighters too much to get through your exams. Make sure to get enough sleep and don't try to live on cup noodles." And that's because the "Y'shtola is doomed" take isn't how things work in the world of FFXIV. Life force, magic, even the soul--it's _all_ aether, and living beings replenish it constantly. It's closer to the way teleportation worked in FFXIV 1.0--people had a limited amount of a specific kind of aether referred to as "anima" that protected them while teleporting, and once it was used up, they couldn't teleport until their anima had time to replenish itself. Y'shtola is using her anima (or something akin to it) to see, in addition to whatever the usual load is, and she needs to be careful not to fall afoul of side effects...but the side effects are likely to be things like becoming tired more easily, or a shortened teleportation range, or needing to eat more than she's used to. (Hm...is this the point where she starts indulging her sweet tooth? 🍰)
@@forcesinbalance5685 why would they specifically say, in a somber tone, "you know it uses your life force right?" if it wasnt implying it would kill her? The other localizations saying it differently makes the weird non-issue it is more digestable if it was just an explanation.
Thancred's new outfit is hell of a glow up for the man, and if you don't think this way, then... yeah, it's fine, everyone has their own opinion. But I liked it
Yeah I figured that would annoy some people 😅 His ShB and EW outfits suit him much better IMO. As you said, everyone has their own opinion. I'm sure there's plenty of other things we'd disagree on as well, but hey, it'd be boring if we all liked the same things!
"Because our perception of time is different, it's hard to fathom holding a grudge for a thousand years" -me, who was cheated on years ago by someone I loved- "I dunno, I kinda get it"
About the purpose of changes in character outfits, I recall a certain young lady named Alisae being salty about not getting a new outfit, saying she feels a lack of "personal development." hehe
Video was an amazing recap about things I missed playing through it on release. I never understood that all the these elves are one cup away from dragonhood. Looking at you Aymeric. I think the only counterpoint I have for playing all these stories in one go is that some of the suspense and endearment comes from waiting for patches and waiting years for character development. We just get used to characters just always being there. Papalymo was with us for years and even though he wasn't a huge part of really anything, he was a part of the Scions and moreso the other half of Yda's personality. I forgot that Alisae wasn't a huge part of the story until the end of Heavensward, and now she's plays a pivotal role each expansion afterwards. Now I can't imagine Alphinaud without her.
I could have sworn Alisaie was in base Heavensward before I played through it again. It's so weird you get introduced to her in ARR then she drops off the face of the earth for around 50 hours or so xD
As a veteran 2.0 player, I loved watching this as it brought back the best and the worst memories of Heavensward. It is honestly one of the best stories in all of gaming, and left a lasting impression in my life. As Haurchefant's final words to us, I always smile and have actually smiled more around people after that. Heavensward is, and always will be, my favorite expansion for FFXIV.
I stopped playing once I hit the free trial limit, but now that they've expanded it I've been recapping on the story since I don't rememeber it very well, but you're right I DO remember that campfire scene. So simple and so good, all those characters have actual character
thanks for doing this. i was a heretical story skipper bc i didn't start playing until 5.4 and was trying to get caught up to play with friends. always have been on the lookout for recaps but have never been able to find ones with good writing AND good voice work so tysm for this. really looking forward to SHB and EW.
this expansion gave me some of my fav characters, what i love about them is that when our character is usually called the hero and fights alone, the moment you need help, the people you make in ishgard is there for u, to the point u arent just a friend, you are a brother, a son, and i just love it, they arent there to be backup, there are there to fight with you, shoulder to shoulder
the mentioned stormblood at the end i have to agree with my full heart. especially at my replay, i appreciate it so damn much and much more! you should not compare the expansions with each other, every one of them is an important part of the whole story till endwalker and makes it as brilliant as it is. i mean, bloody hell, look how endwalker makes shadowbringers even better as it was and is by itself! cant wait for dawntrail and all the old and completly new stuff
I think it's a lot better than Heavensward in some aspects, but I can still see why a lot of people don't think so highly of it. Of course, Shadowbringers ends up blowing it out of the water, but that doesn't make Stormblood bad by any stretch of the imagination.
Honestly to me the saddest death of the game was always in the Samurai quest line. Not just the death but everything surrounding the death. It's an extremely heart-wrenching situation.
Circa 2019-2022 I caught up with FFXIV in full. Definitely helped me get through the pandemic. But by the end of Endwalker I was well and truly burned out especially with how conclusive the story felt. I wasn’t even sure I’d be back for Dawntrail. But I’m making baby steps to get back into it and I’m really enjoying the game again. Heavensward is brilliant. I remember it being a real peak, along with Shadowbringers. This is just the kind of series recap I need to remind myself of previous expansions. I think yours are definitely the best I’ve seen; mostly for how you additionally discuss game play mechanics and their effect on the story. Extra effort but pays off in dividends.
I need tis! I need tis! Thank you for uploading this. Please make a playlist for it I never got the time to dive deep to the lore it has a bunch of it and the game is busy on your story and character progress.
@@DynaChris I appreciate the effort and you getting on the main point of the story.. people can forget about this after a year so it's good to have your video story telling on the internet.. It's a hard work revisiting the story , cut-scenes and making a video and editing it that can be easily digest by casual players . I know the hardwork you put on the video..I basically skip most of the part of AAR and HW because of the non-voiced dialouges.
The relationship between Thancred and Minfilia is more of a "father/daughter" or "uncle/niece" relationship. Thancred promised to take care of her after her father died in a situation Thancred blames himself for not being able to stop. Unfortunately Thancred was not in a good state at the time, using his intelligence gathering role for Louisoix as an excuse to be a drunken, womanizing, lout and rarely caring for Minfilia. Though he did train her to fight with daggers but either she simply had little talent for it or he wasn't very serious about teaching her. This left F'lhaminn to raise Minfilia, which was appropriate since the accident that caused Minfilia's father's death was orchestrated by F'lhaminn and her allies. Basically, Thancred feels like he failed Minfilia in every way and now he's never going to be able to make it up to her. His little girl died and he can't tell her he's sorry for being a bad dad.
You my friend have earned yourself a subscription, between this and your ARR videos, this recap has been immensely wonderful to listen to. Looking forward to Stormblood as that is the expansion I am currently on. Well, technically I am in 4.1, but I have yet to continue the main story, because Omega and Ivalice are just too hype.
Thank you very much! The Stormblood raids are GREAT! Just a shame Ivalice doesn't pop up in the roulettes very often (at least in my experience). Oh, and you're in for a hell of a ride when you get to Shadowbringers!
@@DynaChris Yeah, I've gone through the Delta and Sigmascape so far and the amount of freak-outs that I have had in party chat should've been screenshotted for prosperity. I haven't managed to queue up for the first Ivalice Raid on Dynamis yet, I think I may have to Data Center hop for that one. And I know nothing about Shadowbringers, but my plan this week is to start going through the patch quest MSQ. Far too much to do in this game, though can't say that's a bad thing.
@@TheXehanorto Ah yes, I've heard about the low population on Dynamis. My condolences! By the way, see if you can get people to join you for the savage raids if you want to REALLY start freaking out in the chat ;)
These video's are amazing mate keep it up, I understand not everything could be covered since the video is all ready so long just following the events of the MSQ but I really hope you'll do more videos that cover the raid storylines and maybe even some dungeons/ trials that have story quests of their own and the job quests for each expansion.
On Y'shtola's eyes, apparently in other languages her aethersight doesn't drain her lifespan, but instead just calls upon her aether reserves. Also, on Thancred's outfit, I don't really mind it but I wish he'd have replaced it once be was back on his feet in the Scions. His outfit is good and makes sense considering his circumstances, I just don't know why kept wearing it for so long.
I just told my buddy yesterday I need to go back and watch videos on all the expansions because I’ve forgotten so much, plus to just revisit the story. Perfect timing. Just wish I could insert my char into the cut scenes.
That's why I started making these videos. There was a ton I'd forgotten about and it's been so much fun revisiting the story. And speaking of inserting your character into the cutscenes, I had planned to change to a femroe for Dawntrail, but now I'm worried I'll look back on these videos and miss my silly little catgirl!
Strictly speaking, you can. You can use the journal called The Unending Journey in any inn room to view cutscenes, many inserting your character as they are unless you change your job/equipment.
I'm working backwards through the three videos you've got out and believe me, you've won me into subscriber-hood easily. I love intelligent, thoughtful, and nuanced analysis like this, and FFXIV is a game well worth analysing. If I remember rightly, when they were working on Heavensward and knew the game was absolutely a massive hit, Yoshi-P and his team talked Squeenix into giving them the money to hire a more experienced studio to do the Voice Acting and it really shows. The difference is night and day! (Although personally I kinda wish they'd kept Urianger's original VA, Gideon Emery is an incredibly talented performer.)
Thank you! I wish I had more time to go a bit more in-depth with it - especially for the ARR vid, which I wasn't too happy with tbh - but yeah there's a lot to talk about. Kinda dreading the Shadowbringers video - it's just over 2 hours and I'm not sure how many people will want to watch/listen to something that long 😅
Man Ngl I seriously completely forgot that Papalymo dies until you just reminded me XD, yet I will never forget Haurchefants death until I probably develop dementia in my old age. It is a perfect example of amazing character writing next to forgettable character writing. Papalymo isn’t a bad character, he’s just completely forgettable…
I like how you slipped and called him Ardbert a few times. Who? Who's Ardbert? I don't know that name yet. 😉 Sidenote I like how out of all the "villains", Ilberd is one of the only ones that actually won. Yeah, he died, but his entire goal came to fruition. He got the Warrior of Light to go to Ala Mhigo and liberate his country. That's all he wanted.
Actually the Roegadyn (his name escapes me atm) does refer to him as "Arbert" one time, which Ardbert references in ShB :) And technically Ilberd saved the universe xD
59:52 if you know his later looks, its obvious that its Urianger, but for a fresh player, its not so clear. Up to that point, we only saw his mouth, we dont even knew his hair color back then, unless you really checked his model out during the game... Its obvious the moment he speaks though xD
You see antitower more in roulette because it is the fastest level 60 dungeon. So it is used a lot for relic grinding! Sohr Khai has no such use so it wouldn't pop up as often!
Kind of in retrospect, but thinking of the final fight of Endwalker, it would not be hard to imagine that Eikons like Ravanna and Susanoo would have loved nothing more then to join the WoL in that fight.
As someone who started at the launch of stormblood with 3 friends, finishing ARR and then the friends dropping in between ARR and HW, when i started HW, i had no idea how patch stories worked, so when i finished base HW, it never felt complete, as you said, the ending parts felt rushed, HW always felt.more complete with the patches, soni was always confused, but it was a good run. . . . Also, good lord, Yshtola using a spell called flow? God damn...
It's just a shame Azys Lla barely gets used in the MSQ until post-Shadowbringers, and even then it's not very much. Biggest HW map, least amount of story content :(
I think the scions changing their outfits throughout the games story isn't just mean't to be a character model update. I feel it also acts as a physical marker of their character growth and shared experiences with the mc in the ever changing and evolving world of Eorzea.
I think the main reason for Regula van Hydrus and the Empire showing up when they do is to set up the Warring Triad. Just like how Nael was Legatus of the 7th legion and executed the Meteor Project, van Hydrus is from the 6th legion and the Warring Triad was a callback to FF6. Even Zenos being in charge of the 12th legion is a callback to FF12 with Zenos being the son of the Emperor and ruling over a conquered nation, even without bringing up Return to Ivalice.
Yeah, they mention the Aetherochemical Research Facility and the Warring Triad as their reasons for heading to Azys Lla. A lot of players don't touch the optional stuff (sadly) so to have the empire turn up only for it to not really go anywhere has got to feel weird. Warring Triad's a great series of trials, though.
Another great recap, this is turning out to be the perfect thing to bring me back up to speed with all the story so far. I noticed you didn't cover the raid stories in this video like you did in the last one. Is it because the ARR ones kind of feel more connected to the overall story?
Yeah, I included ARR's raids because they're relevant right the way up through Endwalker. I would've liked to include the Omega raids cos of the Endwalker relevance, but I wanted to do them synced and queues were taking FAR too long.
HVN is only surpassed the SHB in it's story. Yes, as you say the end of the base story feels a bit rushed, I'm not sure that having much more of Ysayle's story would have helped. We see her broken after the meeting the Hraesvelgr, and seemingly not much use to anyone, as Estinien notes. What happened between then and jumping off the dragon might not have been very interesting. A bit of introspection, chatting with the dragon.. best left to our imagination I think. Anyway, you've got another sub. Very nice recap.
Like everyone else, I love Namamo's reunion with Rauban, but GOD, did they fall flat on the overall payoff. ARR's ending was one of the biggest gut punches and that ending sets up for most of HW and parts of ShB. So for it to just be resolved like "lol jk," it was a really hard pill to swallow
30:50 On Y'Shtola's eyes: It was later explained as a translation error. It isn't draining her life away to see like that. More like it's taxxing on her well being and overuse isn't healthy. Not that it's literally draining years away.
I remember when I was clearing the Vault and I told my friend about it (he’s played for years but didn’t realize how fast I got there) He immediately told me to, put nicely “Hold the fuck up, get in the call”
I don't get why people get so torn up about Haurchefant. I played since the launch of ARR. He's a nice guy but he's such a minor character that I barely knew who he was when he dies in that scene. It was shocking to see them finally commit to killing off a real character but.... I felt like I knew nothing about the man really.
Also, you can meet Papalymo's parents in Old Sharlyan So we do actually remember him And he is present in one of the EW dungeons, as you mentioned But I legit lost my shit and started crying when "Answers - reprise" started playing, the same blue sphere appeared and Papalymo vaporized with a smile on his face, like Louisoix
Don't think I agree with you on the last leg of Heavensward. I'd argue that if course it feels rushed, because you're rushing. You're moving as fast as you can to catch up with the people who just killed your friend. If anything, it's not rushed enough for my liking. I always hate when the story gives us a big, 'Quick! They're getting away!' Moment but you're stuck sweeping someone's floor or something equally stupid. . Won't fight on it not making sense that a ship the size of Bismark just comes out of nowhere though. That doesn't make sense.
Unpopular opinion, We need more Haurachefant moments in the game, to thin the cast down close out story lines and characters that aren't going anywhere anymore. And make way for new characters and stories. I'm looking at you Thancred!
Nah, gotta keep Thancred around for the big reunion with Ryne, whenever it eventually happens. Wouldn't be mad if someone ended up staying there, actually.
@DynaChris Hmm I would agree but Thancred basically said his goodbye to Ryne and if he returned he would be the awkward third wheel (dad) to Ryne and Gaia haha. I'm all for Y'shtola returning to the first for her man Runar though!
The scene where we and alpi throw the nidhog eye to bridge on same side even not even try to seperate will always get laugh on me Like.... Thats the best solution they can come up with?
I feel like I really missed out here I was so lost and confused this whole story that when Haucherfant died in the vault I personally felt like it was a lot of cinematic for an acquaintance. It didn’t have an impact on me, Ysale dying had a bigger impact And so I also never remembered his last words… which made some later dialogue options feel cringe lacking the context
there is actually a papalymo refrence in the last dungeon of post stormblood, but it's npc text during the battle. and not audio so no they didn't forget about the potato
I'm loving this so much. But I gotta ask, which armor are you rocking in most of the cutscenes? Because that's some solid Dragoon looking armor. And I don't think I've seen it before.
Oh that's the Dragonlancer's armour - you get it for completing the level 60 job quest, but if you got rid of it, you can buy it in Ishgard for Centurio Seals at the Forgotten Knight :)
so do you think thancred goes on to get just a single contact over that eye to have it match the other or two mismatched contacts, one clear and one colored
It will be interesting hearing a defense of stormblood. I played through it fairly recently and the whole time I was thinking that I wouldn’t even be a part of this conflict. Other than the negotiation scene with the emperor, I think it’s the low point of the story, with the most irredeemable, unrelatable, one dimensional, inhuman villain in the entire game.
I really do think it's underrated, but I was getting bored of the empire towards the end. I wouldn't say I'm "defending" it, but I do think pretty highly of it - especially after a second run. It's the stuff in the far east that's really interesting IMO.
@@DynaChris I am looking forward to listening to your take! Perhaps it will help me see some things I missed the first time around. By the way, you are doing a phenomenal job with the writing and pacing of these videos.
I recently replayed HW and I definitely agree that Azys Lla was rushed. It's just a series of "go to point B, then backtrack to point C, then back again" apart from the diversion with the imperials and Tiamat. It's a real shame, but otherwise very much enjoyed the expansion and the patches :)
People knock the voice actors from ARr, but I'd like to point out that many of those actors were well respected, experienced, and much lauded performers. ARR was rushed and, in my opinion at least, the voice acting suffered more from shoddy voice direction and the voice director not taking the project seriously as a narrative. The British voice actors (and, most likely, voice director) were cheaper than the California based performers and recording studios and benefitted from that British attituded towards performance of no job being worth slighting the performance. Basically, I think it was the direction that was bad, not the fault of the American actors.
True, but his role in the MSQ is pretty underwhelming. I kinda wish they brought the Warring Triad into the MSQ tbh, but maybe that's just the FF6 fan in me talking :p
I will never be okay about Haurchefant... the first Truest Friend that the WoL made. Alphinaud has somewhat gotten there by the time youre rescuing Aymeric, but its just not the same...
Aymeric and Haurchefant (and his family) are my everything from this Expansion, I always end up revisiting Ishgard to stay close to Aymeric and Edmont.
I love these videos, but I do feel like a lot of the 'conveniences' you complain about are actually a positive - Having characters do things productively off screen gives a greater sense that your character is really part of an organization that works well together. Some of them are truly egregious, yes, but I honestly believe the majority of these are just good writing.
Just wondering are you going to make a video going over the other different alliance raids and trial series? I noticed in this video the warring triad and Shadow of mhach weren't mentioned.
Not in the immediate future, but I'm not gonna rule it out. I wanted to get these videos out in time for Dawntrail and ended up running short on time, so I just stuck to the MSQ. I would've loved to go over the raids/trials, though - especially Warring Triad, Omega, Eden, and Sorrow of Werlyt. Maybe I'll go back to them over the summer when I can take my time with it :)
Now hold up, Regula is NOT a generic Imperial! you literally fight along side him in Warring Triad, so you actually ally with Imperials for a common cause, which never happened before, but will happen later
True, but if you're just running through the MSQ, that's all he is, and it's honestly pretty disappointing. The Warring Triad was a great questline, though!
50:24 I might need to replay this part, but I remember this being my most hated part of the entire story; nothing else came remotely close. Something I wonder about is, in the original Japanese, did Emmanalain (sp) actually order "shoot her?" Everything that followed would have made more sense and felt more justified if he had, even if it was a spur-of-the-moment mistake.
I love the moment lolorito stands in the door offering you the antivenom, Befor that I was always wondering why we, after arr basically a demigod, don’t just kill the enemy or how Uldal can chase us out when the ultimate weapon culd not, But here stands a weak, mortal lalafel, unarmed, unguarded and surrounded by you and your ally’s, and not only can’t you kill him, no you even have to waveguide him and escort him back… that is true power
I have a completely different opinion of the King Thordan encounter. After seeing the guy kill an Ascian in one swing, I expected a powerful enemy and I was underwhelmed to say the least. The tuning of this encounter is abysmal and both the King and his knights fall over so fast that they barely have time for a single ability each. The lack of difficulty ruins the epicness of the animations throughout the fight and they did not do the Knights of the Round justice. Granted, the tuning of the game up to this point has always been weak and any encounter tied to the MSQ remains that way until Shadowbringer, but this fight in particular fell flat in my opinion.
The critically acclaimed expansion that's also part of a free trial that lets you play all the way through A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, AND Stormblood up to level 70 with no restrictions on playtime, no less!
The abundance of northern English accents did get a bit much! There's a couple of voice actors that were pretty good in ARR, but most of their replacements were better IMO
You dropped out of nowhere and gave people the recaps we have been needing before Dawntrail. So hyped for the Stormblood and Shadowbringers episodes
Thank you! I can't wait for everyone to see them - especially the ShB one, which is really turning into something I can be proud of.
By the way, is that a Link to the Past-inspired profile pic? That's my favourite Zelda game!
@@DynaChris It's an original female link art from around when the NES games came out. But seriously keep up the work
Haurchefaunt is the most devastating death in the entire game... And *then* you have to tell his dad.
It was ALWAYS having to tell his father that destroyed me...
Look, I know I'm not the only one who sees Ser Aymeric as "Daddy", but it's lovely to hear someone else vocalize it from time to time.
It was extremely important to keep that bit in there, okay? :p
@@DynaChris I agree! I feel seen!
@@Morvelaira hes not a daddy i swear under that armor hes wearing fishnets and a miniskirt lol
@@desryntelvanni3105 Who says daddy can't slay in fishnets?
@@desryntelvanni3105 Aymeric is daddy and babygirl at the same time. He is absolutely a service switch and that's why we love him so much.
I'll never understand why the Warrior of Light doesn't bring a servant with them to taste these things...
It's the echo.
I had the same reaction to this moment…was just waiting for something to fall through. Glad it went the way it did but the tension was magnificent !
I'm a Gridanian "native", but Ul'dah is where I ended up spending most of my time. I liked the Syndicate being the essential rulers of the state(also the Goldsmithing/Textile industry is amazing.) Dewlala is especially blunt - the context all but says "If Lolorito had ever wanted Nanamo to die, it would have been nothing for him to order it."
Ysayle's model being tilted as she walks up is too funny.
The sidelong glance your WoL gives the servant pouring wine is also hilarious.
I legit don't know why the WoL doesn't have a taster following them around after getting drugged like that.
Yeah a lot of the Ishgardians were stubborn idiots in ARR - except for Haurchefant, of course. And dadd- uh... I mean, Aymeric.
Yeah it's brought up a couple of times in Shadowbringers but almost immediately forgotten about again lol
Okay, see, THAT makes more sense. Goofy localizers.
Properly speaking, Matoya never says it's going to cause some long-term deterioration, even in the localization. The full line is: "I need not tell you that it consumes your very life force to see by sensing the aether around you. Take care of yourself, do you hear me?"
People who want to complain about plot holes are quick to claim that it means she's shortening her life span, but that's not how Matoya delivers the line. There's no "Oh, no, my prize student is going die before she gets as old and magnificently cranky as me. We need to do something about this." The air is more, "You're relying on coffee and all-nighters too much to get through your exams. Make sure to get enough sleep and don't try to live on cup noodles."
And that's because the "Y'shtola is doomed" take isn't how things work in the world of FFXIV. 🍰)
@@DynaChrisIt’s brought up multiple times in Endwalker too cmon

Thancred in this expansion down to his look and how much he contributes to the story made him my second favorite characters in the entire game.

The algorithm has brought me another great channel.
Great video man!!
Amazing lore recap channel, hope you get big, looking forward to the Stormblood recap
thanks for doing this. i was a heretical story skipper bc i didn't start playing until 5.4 and was trying to get caught up to play with friends. always have been on the lookout for recaps but have never been able to find ones with good writing AND good voice work so tysm for this. really looking forward to SHB and EW.
These videos have been amazing, cant wait for the Stormblood video!
this expansion gave me some of my fav characters, what i love about them is that when our character is usually called the hero and fights alone, the moment you need help, the people you make in ishgard is there for u, to the point u arent just a friend, you are a brother, a son, and i just love it, they arent there to be backup, there are there to fight with you, shoulder to shoulder
I loved the first one so please keep going! It's super awesome and very easy to follow too!
I just came back to the game, and these are so helpful for me to recap story I’ve experienced but since forgot the beats to
the mentioned stormblood at the end i have to agree with my full heart. especially at my replay, i appreciate it so damn much and much more! you should not compare the expansions with each other, every one of them is an important part of the whole story till endwalker and makes it as brilliant as it is. i mean, bloody hell, look how endwalker makes shadowbringers even better as it was and is by itself!
cant wait for dawntrail and all the old and completly new stuff
I think it's a lot better than Heavensward in some aspects, but I can still see why a lot of people don't think so highly of it. Of course, Shadowbringers ends up blowing it out of the water, but that doesn't make Stormblood bad by any stretch of the imagination.
@@DynaChris the steppes alone and shtolas biggest critical hit, the kami storyline and the sky pirates made it a true highlight.
@@larskoenig6021 Magnai never truly recovered...
Honestly to me the saddest death of the game was always in the Samurai quest line. Not just the death but everything surrounding the death. It's an extremely heart-wrenching situation.
I'm so glad I got recommended this video! Your videos are awesome, I hope your channel will continue to grow!!
The playlist is in the description :) I wouldn't say this is a deep dive into the lore, but I do try to be pretty thorough!
I love these recaps! Keep up the good work 😊
I love this series so far! Keep up the amazing work!
A well made video. I enjoyed your retelling of the story and will be watching the rest later :-)
Great video cheers - just going back to check out the ARR one too.

Funnily enough I actually recently got the Hraedvelgr dungeon in duty roulette so your comment about never seeing it was very interesting to me
I got it the other day, as well! 😂
Kinda dreading the Shadowbringers video - it's just over 2 hours and I'm not sure how many people will want to watch/listen to something that long 😅
@@DynaChris I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Two hour long videos are pretty average in the game analysis and review sphere these days!
@@Tolly7249 Yeah but I'm not confident in the idea of people listening to me waffle on for 2 hours lmao
😉
Sidenote I like how out of all the "villains", Ilberd is one of the only ones that actually won. Yeah, he died, but his entire goal came to fruition. He got the Warrior of Light to go to Ala Mhigo and liberate his country. That's all he wanted.
Actually the Roegadyn (his name escapes me atm) does refer to him as "Arbert" one time, which Ardbert references in ShB :)
And technically Ilberd saved the universe xD
59:52 if you know his later looks, its obvious that its Urianger, but for a fresh player, its not so clear.
Up to that point, we only saw his mouth, we dont even knew his hair color back then, unless you really checked his model out during the game...
Its obvious the moment he speaks though xD
You see antitower more in roulette because it is the fastest level 60 dungeon. So it is used a lot for relic grinding! Sohr Khai has no such use so it wouldn't pop up as often!
Ah, gotcha. I'm not efficient when it comes to that sorta thing xD
Biggest HW map, least amount of story content :(
Furthermore, Azys Lla has literally one aetheryte, and it’s at the very beginning of Azys Lla, which means getting anywhere is so tiresome.
Post ARR to the lead up to Heavensward was peak in terms of story telling
Final Fantasy 5 was the first one I played and is still my favorite 😁
Wow a video on the critical acclaimed expansion which you can play for free with no limit on play time 🎉🎉
Amazing work! Been listening along whilst crafting away irl! Please give your sweet black kitty in your photo a loving pet from your new subscribers ❤
30:50 On Y'Shtola's eyes: It was later explained as a translation error. It isn't draining her life away to see like that. More like it's taxxing on her well being and overuse isn't healthy. Not that it's literally draining years away.
Yeah a handful of people have pointed that out :) One of a handful of translation errors, from what I've heard.
@@DynaChris Guess I shoulda read comments first lol. Good video tho watched through.
I remember when I was clearing the Vault and I told my friend about it (he’s played for years but didn’t realize how fast I got there)
He immediately told me to, put nicely
“Hold the fuck up, get in the call”
If I ever have a friend who's playing XIV for the first time, I might have to do the same!
Also, you can meet Papalymo's parents in Old Sharlyan
So we do actually remember him
And he is present in one of the EW dungeons, as you mentioned
But I legit lost my shit and started crying when "Answers - reprise" started playing, the same blue sphere appeared and Papalymo vaporized with a smile on his face, like Louisoix
Didn't know about his parents! I haven't done all the yellow side quests in EW yet :(
Dude, I don't know where the heck you came from, but maaaan, you're doing an awesome job!!!
The scene where we and alpi throw the nidhog eye to bridge on same side even not even try to seperate will always get laugh on me
Like.... Thats the best solution they can come up with?
I feel like I really missed out here
I was so lost and confused this whole story that when Haucherfant died in the vault I personally felt like it was a lot of cinematic for an acquaintance. It didn’t have an impact on me, Ysale dying had a bigger impact
And so I also never remembered his last words… which made some later dialogue options feel cringe lacking the context
there is actually a papalymo refrence in the last dungeon of post stormblood, but it's npc text during the battle. and not audio so no they didn't forget about the potato
@@DynaChris I think I might have, so I will definitely be buying those back! Thank you so much, and keep up the good work!

so do you think thancred goes on to get just a single contact over that eye to have it match the other or two mismatched contacts, one clear and one colored
Well NOW I do! :p
It is not a stupid squirrel it is a "Nutkin" and covers exactly what his name says :D
I was waiting for the "Sloppy." I kept shouting it when you brought him up. The Japanese VA delivers the "Sloppy" so much better though.
SLOPPEH
I recently replayed HW and I definitely agree that Azys Lla was rushed. It's just a series of "go to point B, then backtrack to point C, then back again" apart from the diversion with the imperials and Tiamat. It's a real shame, but otherwise very much enjoyed the expansion and the patches :)
Yeah, minor blemish on a fantastic expansion. I'm glad the rest of the expansions take their time with things
how the hell do you only have 500 subs
I'm honestly happy to have hit 500 so quickly, but I'll take that as a compliment! :)
Regula van Hydrus does get some more development in the Warring Triad storyline.
True, but his role in the MSQ is pretty underwhelming. I kinda wish they brought the Warring Triad into the MSQ tbh, but maybe that's just the FF6 fan in me talking :p
Good old Grynewaht, FFXIV's Pete
my character still wears the fortemps shield on their back
Never forget! o7
I will never be okay about Haurchefant... the first Truest Friend that the WoL made. Alphinaud has somewhat gotten there by the time youre rescuing Aymeric, but its just not the same...
The amount of times he's brought back up as well :(
Aymeric and Haurchefant (and his family) are my everything from this Expansion, I always end up revisiting Ishgard to stay close to Aymeric and Edmont.

I'm one of those platers with a shrine in my house...
To be fair, I'd probably have one as well, if I had the patience to buy and decorate a house...
I love these videos, but I do feel like a lot of the 'conveniences' you complain about are actually a positive - Having characters do things productively off screen gives a greater sense that your character is really part of an organization that works well together. Some of them are truly egregious, yes, but I honestly believe the majority of these are just good writing.
...you just had to say "Critical Acclaim", didn't you?
Subbed.
You have no idea how hard it is to make these videos without mentioning the free trial :p
It's just so good😺😹😼
Now hold up, Regula is NOT a generic Imperial!
you literally fight along side him in Warring Triad, so you actually ally with Imperials for a common cause, which never happened before, but will happen later
True, but if you're just running through the MSQ, that's all he is, and it's honestly pretty disappointing. The Warring Triad was a great questline, though!
A true blessing for this bank holiday! Thankyou!
Thank you very much! Glad to see so many people enjoying these!

I might need to replay this part, but I remember this being my most hated part of the entire story; nothing else came remotely close.
Something I wonder about is, in the original Japanese, did Emmanalain (sp) actually order "shoot her?" Everything that followed would have made more sense and felt more justified if he had, even if it was a spur-of-the-moment mistake.
Stormblood next, chop chop XIV man

For entertainment purposes
Naturally!
I love the moment lolorito stands in the door offering you the antivenom,
Befor that I was always wondering why we, after arr basically a demigod, don’t just kill the enemy or how Uldal can chase us out when the ultimate weapon culd not,
But here stands a weak, mortal lalafel, unarmed, unguarded and surrounded by you and your ally’s, and not only can’t you kill him, no you even have to waveguide him and escort him back… that is true power
Not the critically acclaimed expansion Heavensward!? Can't wait to watch this one!
The critically acclaimed expansion that's also part of a free trial that lets you play all the way through A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, AND Stormblood up to level 70 with no restrictions on playtime, no less!
i miss Papalymo every day....
Who else thi nks aemeric shouldve joined his shield to the 3 other leaders instead of his sword.
I still feel that ARR Ilbert had a better voice.
The abundance of northern English accents did get a bit much! There's a couple of voice actors that were pretty good in ARR, but most of their replacements were better IMO
@@DynaChris yeah, I can agree to that. Pretty much the only voices I wish they hadn't changed were Ilbert and Merlwyb.
