Playgrounds: Sun Valley

So, why do they call this place Sun Valley?
That’s the question we're still asking ourselves on day three of the storm cycle. We haven’t seen anything remotely like the sun since Sunday, with inches of snow piling up as we looked on. The town is absolutely buried - cars are unrecognizable, roofs are sliding, and every skier in Ketchum is frothing to finally get after it after a particularly dry start to the season. One skier in particular - Karl Fostvedt - is beyond excited for the fresh coat of paint in order to show us around his stomping grounds.

Baldy used to be an okay mountain that was made awesome by the people who skied and lived there. Now the whole area is neo-cali, full of kyles and Karen's with plenty of money and zero humanity. Bums me out every time i have to drive thru ketchum. Good to see a yokel still living the dream.

Better yet: name one quality resort that would even exist without wealthy people investing in every aspect of the place. Sun Valley is an incredible mountain and Ketchum is a beautiful mountain town with great people and history. Visited for the first time this season and I can’t wait to go back.

By the way, folks from your crew filmed me skiing behind Grand Targhee resort in the Side Country back in the mid-90s. I don't even think my clip made it to the cutting room floor. About a 6-ft cornice drop and a very clean line on 200 cm K2 slalom skis! I was never asked to sign a release.
