    I'm with you about that solo and I've been listening to solos for 40+ years. That's some funky jam! AIC is part of the big 4 (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains..I would include Stone Temple Pilots on that list as well) of the early 90s grunge scene. Huge in the day, they created a ton of bangers. You can't go wrong and his voice sounds like that live too. Incredible vocalist, gone too soon.

    Alice In Chains is one of my favorite bands. They emerged from the Seattle grunge scene in the early 90’s alongside Nirvana and were very influential to rock during this time. Jerry Cantrell(lead guitarist) wrote most of the songs, the amazing powerful voice you hear is Layne Staley, who has his own tragic life story that ended shortly after a drug addiction. Other songs by them I recommend you give a listen to are Would?, Rooster, Down in a Hole, Love Hate Love, Nutshell.. honestly just do a lot of their songs. Lol

  • @Zero-Fox-Garage

    Lyrics for this are pretty cryptic, and even Layne Staley admitted he was stoned when he wrote it. It's allegedly about censorship in media. Still a banger, even if it doesn't exactly make any sense.

    You're not tripping. It's a great guitar solo. It's not the hardest solo in the world to play, but it doesn't have to be. I think that's where too many people make the mistake. The notes played with the effects used blend perfectly with the mood of the song. Have always loved that solo.

    • @enrique7208
      @enrique7208 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah a lot of theories, but I think the censorship is the one that fits most considering some of their other songs. There’s a theory it’s also about how animals/livestock are treated, caged in small boxes never seeing the light of day(feed my eyes), and that’s why there’s animals like goats and pigs in the video. Not sure if Jerry Cantrell ever broke down the true meaning behind the song

    • @enrique7208
      @enrique7208 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok just looked it up, in a early interview around the time this song became a hit, Jerry Cantrell says the song is about censorship and the way the government and media control the way you view the world and think. So we are all the man in the box and we need to break out of it and think for ourselves. He didn’t talk about the video, but it’s easy to see now that the livestock reference is being used as a literal comparison, confined to a box and controlled. So yeah, you’re right. Censorship

    I like your rating of guitar solos and I would suggest looking at different factors of the solo, specifically flow/fit. There’s a lot of songs that have solos where the guitarist completely goes off and kills the solo, but it doesn’t necessarily fit the flow/rhythm of the song. Jerry Cantrell is a great guitarist and is capable of doing that but in this solo he doesn’t go over the top to show off his skill. It meshes perfectly with the rest of the song. I’d give it a 8/10, only because I’d be real picky and select in giving a 9 or 10

  • @Jellyroll2
    @Jellyroll2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You want to rate guitar solos? AIC will always rank up with 9s and 10s no matter which song you choose. Their lead guitarist (and co-vocalist) Jerry Cantrell is a living fucking legend of guitar players. They call him the Riff Lord he’s that damn good. Plus he’s their principal songwriter and wrote at least half the lyrics during the Staley era. He and Layne were a powerhouse together

    Love Alice in Chains! Try Rooster next..If you like guitar solo's Try Freebird live at knebworth! In my opinion it is hands down one of the best solo's ever and this live version goes on and on and never loses momentum all the way through!

    A.I.C. is the best band ever. No one will ever come close to Layne. He is the 🐐, far and away.

    You really should listen to the live unedited version of the song to really feel this man’s pain. Such a talent lost. :(

    So Jerry Cantrell(Lead Guitarist and main songwriter for the group) has said that this song is about censorship and the way the media and government control what we see and how we think. So we are the man in the box. The way I see the song is 2 people, the man in the box is the lead singer Layne Staley(RIP, died in 2001 after a long fight with his heroin addiction) and the controlling party is Jerry Cantrell(guitarist/backup vocals). Layne is pleading for help, Jerry is censoring him. Layne asks, “Won’t you come and save me?” Layne wants to see more, “Feed my eyes” Jerry tells him, “Can you sew them shut?” Layne begs for help, “Jesus Christ”. Jerry tells him “Deny your maker.” Followed by “He who tries”, “will be wasted”. Then again, “feed my eyes”, “now you’ve sewn them shut.”
