Because they produced hit after hit after hit, they were seen by the casual fan as more as a pop group, when in reality they were doing some really impressive prog rock. Love the guitar solo extro on this track. More Supertramp please!

Supertramp had two great songwriters (Roger Hodson and Rick Davies), who with the band's success, sort of began to compete within the band, with each singing their own compositions. This led to Hodson's departure announced at a performance in Germany in 1985. In this song Davies sings and Hodson does the falsetto.

Yes, it was the guitar u two were discussing, and it was the clever use of the Wah-wah pedal that created the effect you were talking about. The Wah-wah pedal is a floor device effect through which the guitar is connected to the amplifier, and when the pedal is in upright position it is the bassiest of tones, and when the pedal is totally depressed it is the trebliest of tones. Stepping up and down frequently creates the Wah-wah type sound.

Supertramp one of my all time favs, always layers upon layers in every song, but this is a classic example, well some experts say the song is about the end of a relationship, to me it’s about one night stands possibly with multiple women, others say it’s about giving up marijuana Mary Jane back then was often referred to as pot, but taking into context of the album going to America the 2nd invasion of British music, meeting girls on the road the freedom of one nighters no time for commitment life on the road as a band etc, my take anyway, great great song, no Dideridoo’s
    Just great musicians
Rick Davies on Wurlitzer electric piano and Hammond Organ lead singer and backin vocals
Rodger Hodgson on Electric guitar, lead vocals on chorus, backing vocals rest
John Heliwell backing vocals and whistling, rare for him not to be on Sax or Clarinet
    Dougie Thomson on Bass guitar
    Big Bob on drums..
Just excellent musicians they don’t make ‘em like this anymore..

Yes "Breakfast in America" if you look closely at the "city" behind the waitress you will see salt & pepper shakers, coffee cups, cream & sugar containers, bottles that represent various things you would see on a Diner table, there is also an egg cartoon in there standing on it's edge. It really it a cool graphic.

    Will we ever meet again?
Feel no sorrow; feel no shame
    Till tomorrow, feel no pain

I'm probably wrong, but I always sing it "come tomorrow, feel no pain." I guess that's the beauty of lyrics even if you tweak them to make more sense to you.

This song is so richly layered it takes a few times hearing to fully appreciate. The call and response part of the chorus is fantastic.

Roger Hodgson is better known for his falsetto and keys/acoustic guitar mastery, but he was/is such an underrated electric guitarist imho.

Immediately transporter to the summer after Freshman year. This whole album WAS hanging with my best friend, my last summer without a formal job or a driver's license. It was going to the beach, being driven around by by BFF's older brother in an old Suburban, my first real date.
    Great time for music.
    Classic album.
    Thanks for the memories.

It's NYC and the waitress is the Stature of Liberty... took me years and years to figure that out.

You hear this on the radio and you can't help yourself but to sing along to that chorus..."good bye Marie....." I'd love to be a fly in the back seat of Asia's car to hear her belt it out when she thinks nobody is around.

It’s a guitar with a little bit of a phaser effect. Isn’t it amazing to think that they played this by hand?

Regardless of genre, I prefer handmade music over machine-made music. Humans grooving in real time. That could be this, it could be the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, it could be Metallica, it could be John Denver, it could be Miles Davis, it could be Hank Williams. Did humans play it while tape rolled? Then I prefer it over the alternative.

As a musician, I’m more amazed that people have forgotten that musicians exist and do these things regularly. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Specifically, the city on the cover is NYC. The waitress is Lady Liberty holding her orange juice torch aloft; and the buildings, etc. are all recognizable objects from any diner.

Great song, but I always look forward to the outro, when the guitarist takes off for the stratosphere and beyond. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it ...

My band played this song back in 1979, I used a wah-wah pedal to create different tones during the solo, it sounds like that's what is being done here, with possibly another effect (fast flanger?).
