  • Hello it's Who-Time!
    Today, we're reviewing the Season 9 opener Day of the Daleks, including the Special Edition version on the DVD from 2011.
    When I was a kid, this serial left me bored stiff but when I hit university and the DVD released, I gave it a reappraisal and now I absolutely love it.
    Let's explore all the aspects of the tale: plot, characters, production etc and I'll give you my thoughts in a quick, concise review.
    Thanks for watching!

    I wonder when the season 9 boxset releases I wonder if they’ll be an option to switch up the old voices for the new version but still keeping the old effects I think that would be an interesting thing to see

      Probably would make certain fans happy for sure. Can’t see why it wouldn’t be possible.

    Must see the new improve version on DVD. I’m now seeing Inferno SE on DVD. Like the Genesis of the Daleks the best.

    One of my all time favorite episodes!

    The really weird thing about this is that the broadcast of the final episode of this story is my earliest memory of Who- thanks Dad - and for years I remembered the original as looking and seeming to have the fire and fury of he epic upgrade by the Restoration Team. I am sure that the 'poor' Dalek voices were done by Michael Wisher.. whatever happened to him?

    • @Benji568
      @Benji568 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't Michael Wisher from what I remember. They were done by three voice artists whose names escape me. The only time I think Michael Wisher's Dalek voices sounded okay was More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS, it must be the warbly effect they put on it.

      Oliver Gilbert and Peter Messaline did the Dalek voices for Day of the Daleks.

      Yeah & they’re not great 😜 Didn’t Michael Wisher do the voices in Death to the Daleks though? Quite like the voices in that one.

    I like watching your videos and hearing your opinion. I think you would benefit if you got a mic. You should look into it. The special edition of this story is fantastic and will probably be released again in a season blu ray.

      Fair play; I have a quiet voice. Also i know little about audio editing. I’ll look into it.

      Do it, I want you to be successful. I appreciate your passion of Doctor Who. I've been watching it since 1980. I was 5 years old and Genesis of the Daleks was the first story I saw. I immediately became a fan. Best Davros ever.

    Always loved this. I remember people moaning when the Special Edition came out that it was basically like what George Lucas did with the original Star Wars trilogy with the new effects and the like but overtime people have got over it I think. I to this day have never watched the original transmitted version and have always watched the Special Edition, same can be said with The Five Doctors as well.

      I’m with you all the way on this. Special edition every time on Day. Each fan has their own preferences. It’s a shame for Star Wars fans that they can’t watch the original effects as easily. Here with the Day of the Daleks DVD, you have the 2 options - original & new effects.

    It's a good paradox story, but it does drag in the middle. The biggest flaw in the original, though, was only having three Daleks, and one of them was basically an office wallah, but all tarty 'n' smart in black and gold. I always liked the Ogrons (we need some figures of them, please, CO.- and possibly some Draconians for later?), and it's jarring to see the Doctor casually shooting them. But the whole thing, for bringing the Daleks back, is a tad underwhelming. The Doctor, Jo, and UNIT are as good as ever, but it's not a favourite, sadly.

    I’ve always had a hard time really enjoying Day, personally prefer Planet and Death

    • @Benji568
      @Benji568 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't understand why people have a hard time with Planet of the Daleks. I've always liked it, I think the Spiradons let the story down somewhat and it is a bit of a re-tread of The Daleks back in '64 but it's still pretty good.

    I’m all for tarting up the CGI and adding extras. However, the extra scenes filmed for the final battle are an absolute abomination.
    The Ogron masks are less convincing than the 1970s attempts. Plus unforgivably the UNIT soldier even has the wrong uniform! The scenes just do not match. If they can’t get such obvious details correct, then why actually bother at all?

    • @who-time
      @who-time  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow haven’t heard such a harsh take before. It may not be accurate but it was made in the spirit of the original production with a shoestring budget & the desire to embellish that final battle since it was originally a bit lacklustre. It’s only adding, not taking away.
      Still each to their own, you can of course watch the original version all you want. It’s nice to have options.
