Trying something different this year! Your support has been absolutely incredible this holiday season. I honestly just figured it was unnecessary to raise the price of the bundle after Black Friday, at least until the end of the year. Especially when I know there's stuff out there that's literally thousands of dollars, I personally feel like getting you STARTED is more important than just charging as much as possible, idk. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, etc etc I just hope you all have a great end to 2024. If you feel like starting your piano journey, I'm here for you. shop.betterpiano.com/

I made a comment on a different video by a completely different content creator talking about this. There are so many songs that are incredible works of music that often aren’t taken seriously anymore simply because they’re associated with a silly joke. Like for pop examples, Marvin’s Let’s Get It On or Imogen Heap’s Hide & Seek. Both are good individual songs but no one can really listen to them without thinking of the memes that use them. Which sucks, because then they’re often labeled as “dumb” or “you actually like this song?” because all anyone can think about is comedic sëx scenes or slow motion melodramatic dëath scenes instead of the art it is

@@PiotrBarczRight. That is what I am saying. They are different versions of the same tune. I love both versions. There is another version with JUST Randy Newman singing too.
Jazz seems like that care-free feeling you get when you wanna just chill out. My bet is they chose to put jazz in this movie for this reason. What a world this would be if this phenomenon didn't exist.
"Bored? Go practice." Wow. I can't tell you how many times I heard that as a kid. But I learned 2 instruments then, and three more since because, it's about the journey, right?
I've been saying this for YEARS. This was going to be a Gypsy Jazz Guitar duo piece for my senior recital (2020 lock down happened so it was canceled) but all my prof's were so confused when I pitched it to them. "Like the kids movie theme song?"
YES I've been waiting for you to do this one. One of the most underrated Pixar themes maybe all time. Especially given your jazz background this is right up your alley.
Ok the shot at Hawk Tuah coin was the best part of the video. Also the analysis of this toon. I remember learning this on trombone for my niece because it was her favorite movie. Such a cool track for a random pixar flick
I would have spat out my drink at the phrase "Hawk Tuah pump & dump" if I had any in my mouth at the time. Imagine having to explain this portion of the video to your children in 5 years' time... it would make absolutely no sense to future generations
Monsters inc is the reason I love jazz. Ever since I was 4 and saw this movie for the first time. Thanks for the in depth video Charles, and Merry Christmas 🎄👍
I remember listening to this song again sometime after I got into music remembering how funny I used to think it was, but seeing it in a TOTALLY new light once I had a different understanding of it. Seeing you break it down like this is always so nice to see, thanks for this!!

It really helps me understand it easier and I really appreciate the time and work you put into the videos to accomplish that. Thank you so very much, you are amazing, please keep up the good work!!!! The theme's main lyric phrase bears a striking resemblence to the 1929 jazz song "Rockin' Chair" by Hoagy Carmichael. I couldn't believe how similar these two jazz pieces sound. I knew the tune by memory from hearing the version by Alvino Rey on a WWII compilation. Check that version out: it has an excellent girl chorus on vocals that is similar to the Andrews Sisters.
This might be the last video on your channel this year that's why I just wanted to say thanks for kind of changing my life lol. This year I found my love for music and completely understand theory. What a nice surprise to see this video. I say this, because I LOVE the Monsters Inc theme for its whimsical nature for a jazz-inspired pop theme. It is unapologetically an A-tier Randy Newman composition that does require a break down like this. Thank you for making me better appreciate my younger years through a detailed, yet accessible, breakdown of this iconic tune. :)
I can see ur passion for music theory but it goes straight over my head. But honestly ur enthusiasm brings u in. I know most of ur videos are music theory based but id love to see u perform more often
5:08 You can also go to any key you want by using a diminished 7 chord. Since they're fully symmetrical, you can treat any note in the chord as the root.
I met Charles at a gig his trio did recently, what a cool guy! Very knowledgeable about more than just music, and a great chat. Nice to meet you, Steve, and Matt.
Ok, I thought I was having a schizo moment when I brought up Monica Martin’s Go Easy Kid for the first chord, but now I see this, and James Blake is on both those songs. Who wants to find 70 different songs to stitch together into the piano part for this video?
I have no idea what you're talking about, but I love your videos. Mad respect for musicians. I mean, I do dabble in guitar and know about major/minor chords and a basic (as in very basic) understanding about roots and fifths. But y'all really impress me when you talk music. :)
Practically lost my mind when this theme opened the movie. It was so different than the first three soundtracks. Randy Newman set this up to tell us this will be no ordinary buddy story.
This has been the sound of my childhood indeed. Every time I listen to this piece as well, as the Toy Story soundtrack, it's straight goose bumps and an ocean of emotions. Thank you for this beautiful video, I really appreciate it!
Now I desperately want to watch Monsters Inc! Side note, how much do you practice a song before making a video? Or are you one of those gifted people who can play things instantly? 😂
He stated before he has relevant pitch. So he can identify notes by comparing it to a reference note (textbook definition). So he can learn and play stuff pretty quickly.
What most people don't get is being able to play stuff after only a listen or two isn't necessarily a gift it's a learnable skill. Knowing music theory and having good pitch knowledge is super helpful in these situations.
We have a version of this my conductor did up for our Sax Ensemble and it’s honestly so much fun, especially when he gets to play sop for it and there’s 6 parts going at once. Great tune and even greater sax piece. Kinda sad I’m leaving the ensemble now, but I’ll probably find a group to play it with again 🙂
Eh I wouldn’t say it should be a jazz standard. Mostly because it literally already is. To those who don’t know what I’m talking about take a listen to dolphin dance. A song the the Monsters Inc is VERY inspired by. To the point where is kinda the same
Ever since I was a kid this just made my heart SCREAM with delight. Even when I was 10 and though jazz was stupid and boring it just tickled my entire brain all at once. LOVE this piece.
This is seriously one of the most underappreciated pieces of music. You just can't find any good covers of it anywhere. I think it'd be nice if you could do that. (And btw, those slowed down moments of you explaining the chords sounded really nice)
Charles, we need an Elliot Smith video! I know you would be blown away by his chord progressions, they are truly amazing. Songs such as ‘son of Samson’ ‘colorbars’ or ‘clementine’ (or really any of his songs) would be fascinating to have you react to. Any how, big fan of yours, happy holidays, cheers.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. FOR SO LONG. Nobody listens when I say that the Monsters Inc. theme is one of the best pieces of music ever. Now I can show them this, thank you!
@@MyNameIsNeutronjust such a beautiful tune. All three are stunning. I still technically have tickets to see Randy if he ever gets back to the tour he had to cancel :(
@7:20 - "We're just using every chord and making it dominant so that it functions as a five chord heading somewhere else." Like magical doors in the finale of the movie, jumping from place to place :)
You can do the same thing with diminished chords. Professor 1: What's so great about Reger? It's just a bunch of diminished chords. Professor 2: Exactly! It's brilliant.
In the past few years I've discovered a few local jazz jams- I wouldn't expect them to play this theme over the standards, but I absolutely think it would fit perfectly. If I ever get a chance, I'd love to perform this. Pixar movies have some wonderful music, I watched WALL-E yesterday, score by Thomas Newman (Randy's cousin) any film that Thomas Newman does, Finding Nemo, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile... I just know I'm listening to music by him. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about his beautiful harmonies that are perfect for the situation, whether it's deep space, the deep blue sea, or a bleak prison. I listen to the song 'Down to Earth' quite a bit.
Monsters Inc. was that childhood movie for me that stuck so much. I used to know all the script word per word from start to finish that the dialogues had been carved in my brain. When I tried to trace back my likeness for Jazz music, eventually I realized I was already being exposed to good jazz phrasing and licks from a movie at a young age. Even before I dug deeper in jazz music, whenever I hear someone say jazz, the first lick that pops in my mind is this opening theme. I miss the old Pixar themes.
Charles, what you said about the diminished seventh chord is something CPE Bach loved about its quality. He suggested people use the diminished 7th chord as effective ways to modulate to very remote keys for improvising fantasias. Source: last chapter of his book Essay on the True Art of Keyboard Playing
My favorite pixar theme was a dope subtle variation of the Incredibles main theme, when Helen is encouraging Violet, the flutes right before the line "it's in your blood"? ❤🔥

Lyrics
If I were a rich man
With a million or two
I'd live in a penthouse
In a room with a view
And if I were handsome
No way
It could happen
Those dreams do come true
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you
Wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have
Wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have
Wouldn't have nothing
Can I tell you something?
For years I have envied
You're green with it
Your grace and your charm
Everyone loves you, you know
Yes I know, I know, I know
But I must admit it
Big guy you always come through
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you
You and me together, that's how it always should be
One without the other, don't mean nothing to me nothing to me
Nothing to me
Yeah I wouldn't be nothing, if I didn't have you to serve
I'm just a punky little eyeball, and a funky optic nerve
Hey I never told you this, sometimes I get a little blue
Looks good on you
But wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you
Let's dance
Haha
Look ma, I'm dancin'!
Will you let me lead?
Look at that it's true, big guys are light on their feet
Don't you dare dip me, don't you dare dip me, don't you dare dip me
Ow, I should have stretched
Yes I wouldn't be nothing, if I didn't have you
I know what you mean Sully, because
I wouldn't know where to go
Me too, because I-
Wouldn't know what to do
Why do you keep singing my part?
I don't have to say it
Aww, say it anyway
'Cause we
Both know it's true
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you
Wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you
One more time
It worked!
I don't have to say it
Where'd everybody come from?
'Cause we both know it's true
Let's take it home, big guy
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have
You, you, you

@labro1330 what child is this by vince guaraldi trio
FINALLY! This has been on my jazz classics playlist for years now, so glad to see someone recognize it for the amazing tune it is!
I met Charles at a gig his trio did recently, what a cool guy! Very knowledgeable about more than just music, and a great chat. Nice to meet you, Steve, and Matt.
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long dude
4:28 Godspeed ahh chord progression
Ok, I thought I was having a schizo moment when I brought up Monica Martin’s Go Easy Kid for the first chord, but now I see this, and James Blake is on both those songs.
Who wants to find 70 different songs to stitch together into the piano part for this video?
I have no idea what you're talking about, but I love your videos. Mad respect for musicians. I mean, I do dabble in guitar and know about major/minor chords and a basic (as in very basic) understanding about roots and fifths. But y'all really impress me when you talk music. :)
I've always thought this is one of the best opening credits sequences of all time.
Practically lost my mind when this theme opened the movie. It was so different than the first three soundtracks. Randy Newman set this up to tell us this will be no ordinary buddy story.
It’s already a jazz standard in my school. I wrote a lead sheet for the school band and the teacher sometimes has us play it!
This has been the sound of my childhood indeed. Every time I listen to this piece as well, as the Toy Story soundtrack, it's straight goose bumps and an ocean of emotions. Thank you for this beautiful video, I really appreciate it!
One of my favorite Pixar pieces has always been The Cleaner from Toy Story 2.
I always loved the very Dixieland/Morton way that clarinet was. Sounds like a great mix of Morton and later pieces.
I just noticed you have the exact same Gretchen Catalina club as me!!! Such a nice kit (awesome video btw)
I love your work and your personality. God Bless!
Always love a good Randy Newman video!
Eh I wouldn’t say it should be a jazz standard. Mostly because it literally already is. To those who don’t know what I’m talking about take a listen to dolphin dance. A song the the Monsters Inc is VERY inspired by. To the point where is kinda the same
Dude, when you’re listening to the music at the beginning your facial expressions and body language is pure Rick Beato!
Ever since I was a kid this just made my heart SCREAM with delight. Even when I was 10 and though jazz was stupid and boring it just tickled my entire brain all at once. LOVE this piece.
Neat to see you tackle this! I was looking for analysis of this song a few months back and couldn't find any.
This is the song that taught me how walking bass works
This is seriously one of the most underappreciated pieces of music. You just can't find any good covers of it anywhere. I think it'd be nice if you could do that.
(And btw, those slowed down moments of you explaining the chords sounded really nice)
How about this cover from 1929? th-cam.com/video/4SRwkMLvXWw/w-d-xo.html
@allenlutins that has the same vibe to it and is similar to the Monster Inc. Theme. But it's definitely not a cover of it
absolute gem of an ad transition
Charles, we need an Elliot Smith video! I know you would be blown away by his chord progressions, they are truly amazing. Songs such as ‘son of Samson’ ‘colorbars’ or ‘clementine’ (or really any of his songs) would be fascinating to have you react to. Any how, big fan of yours, happy holidays, cheers.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. FOR SO LONG. Nobody listens when I say that the Monsters Inc. theme is one of the best pieces of music ever. Now I can show them this, thank you!
Wonderful review of this classic song! ty!
Merry Christmas Charles!!!! 🎉
Happy Holidays, Charles Cornell!
Which is better? You Got a Friend in Me or If I Didn't Have You?
If I didn't have you is better imo
Time of Your Life
@@MyNameIsNeutronjust such a beautiful tune. All three are stunning. I still technically have tickets to see Randy if he ever gets back to the tour he had to cancel :(
@7:20 - "We're just using every chord and making it dominant so that it functions as a five chord heading somewhere else."
Like magical doors in the finale of the movie, jumping from place to place :)
You can do the same thing with diminished chords.
Professor 1: What's so great about Reger? It's just a bunch of diminished chords.
Professor 2: Exactly! It's brilliant.
It always amazes me that he does all of this by ear, and without sheet music, scores or transcriptions. Truly impressive.
Came to comment "this is a known fact" in reply to the title, stayed for the music theory explanations. Great video!
I've heard it played once at a swing dancing party, it fit right in with all the other standards!
Bro you make me feel so stupid at music and that what makes me motivates to learn more, please make videos like this! I wanna learn a lot!

My favorite pixar theme was a dope subtle variation of the Incredibles main theme, when Helen is encouraging Violet, the flutes right before the line "it's in your blood"? ❤🔥
7:07 Charles dropping unintentionally the MacGyver intro
😂👍🏼
