  • I mounted the RushFPV Cherry antennas to the Walksnail VTX, and took it out to 4 miles. The Eagle flew great despite the wind. Walksnail made it out there and back just fine, but I don't think it has a whole lot left in the tank at 4 miles... lol I was hoping for a bit more, though I am still at 1080p. I think dropping to 720p will give it a bit more headroom, and we still have the Tripple Feed Patch arrays I can mount up to the receiver, rather than the smaller TFPs on it now.

      What bitrate and resolution are you using? I think the consensus is pretty much that you get better range on 720p at 25Mbps. I'm still at 1080p for now, 25Mbps. I honestly don't see a ton of difference in picture quality between 720 and 1080 unless I pause the video and look close at the fine details... That's ground testing though, might be different in the air.

    I found it to be absolutely critical, to have both high gain patches facing the plane. One on an RX port and the other must be on the TX port of the VRX or goggle. To maintain maximum signal strength, and best range.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm using the VRX, and have my two TFP on the top ports, built in patches for the other two antennas. One of the top ports is the Tx, they're all aimed together and pointed at the plane as best I can get it... lol To be honest I think I'm just kind if finding the limits while flying with the lower gain antennas (as opposed to TFP arrays or something else relatively high gain) and staying under 400ft. With more altitude I could certainly go farther, but we'll save that for another time, and place... ;)

    you could build a little antenna pole at the loveshack ? every meter above ground makes for a better reception and fresnel zone,innit ? crazy flat outthere btw - i only have hills and valleys around me here :)

  • @MrStevegibb
    @MrStevegibb ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Probably worth bypassing the internal patches which are probably crap anyway and putting two more sma connectors on there.
    But honestly i would expect range to be better on 1200mw.
    I hope the VRX is not less sensitive than the goggles.

    • @wattage2007
      @wattage2007 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had my VRX doing the business at 7.4 miles so far with two 150mm triple feeds and the stock patches. Another couple of TF patches on SMAs would deliver mad range, like Wesley Varty's findings.

    I flew my quad yesterday on just 200mw with no issues. Betaflight of course but absolutely no flickering of the OSD. I am using the overlay tool from GitHub though to render the video. Maybe the flickering is because you're recording the live feed directly on your PC?...The HD feed has opened up a new world in terms of detail. Imagine what overhead Summer sun will bring?
    I noticed the onboard video memory ran out again...😳😏😏😀😀🇬🇧👍

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've played around with Kirek's OSD overlay tool a bit, the flickering is there too. It's flickering while flying live on my monitor as well. The recording just records what the HDMI is pumping out... lol It doesn't seem to be related to low signal or whatever, you can see it when the plane is sitting on the runway, before and after switching to low power standby mode.
      Oh and that small onboard memory is one of the first things I suggested they change when submitting feedback to Caddx! lol More storage or an SD card slot. 8GB is not enough for planes that stay in the air more than a few minutes. For now I'm happy recording on the ground though.

    If you decide to put it on the AR Pro, I’ve designed a nice little 3D printed bracket for the VTX and antennas for the “HD hatch”. If you want, I’ll put it on thingiverse. It’s designed to take it apart very easily if you want to remove it or move it to a different plane.

    For more range just fly at higher altitude? Maybe objects in the way.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah more altitude will definitely give you more range, if nothing else just for not violating the fresnel zone... lol I'm just looking to see how this performs in the same way I fly 1.3G analog really, which can definitely fly farther at less than 400ft despite the larger fresnel zone with it's lower frequency. The better penetration makes up for it in that case I guess. Honestly 4 miles under 400ft isn't terrible for 5.8GHz, even more so considering the bandwidth used for HD.

      I pretty much never fly with goggles, just monitors, always have. So I can't comment much on the goggles, but everything I've seen lately seems to suggest most people that have used them like the HDZero ones. For just starting out, I'd say build something cheap and fly it and see if it's something you want to dive deeper into. On the other hand, nice gear would be easy to resell later, and if you stick with it you only have to buy once. There's always two sides to every story... lol
