Some lady went down there & claimed to be my daughters aunt & started receiving her benefits…. I got a letter eventually but they didn’t Check n call or do anything to try to stop it. I’ll make ends meet this month but it honestly isn’t fair to my kid & they won’t arrest the person who did it either

There is a video on TH-cam from Anderson Cooper’s 60 minute talking about how the social security office is ruining people’s lives by saying they owe huge amounts that they claim we’re overpayments. The social security office admits that the overpayment is their fault. Because of the exposure, they forgave the debt of the people on the show. Thousands of elderly and disabled Americans are being affected by their negligence.

I was told I died in 2007 by DHS. They called me and I told them I'm alive. I filled taxes for years and no one said anything about me being dead. I took the driver's license and social.security card showing I was alive. They called me every month for 2 years saying I died.

Take SSA to court. It should not be her job to figure out how to fix this on her own since she didn't make the mistake. And the SSA is sorry for the "inconvenience"?? It's a lot more than that, they are affecting her ability to live and support herself. It should not have taken a news story and attention from a Congressman to make the SSA do the right thing and restore her status. And it took so long to fix because the government is slow and at times uncooperative as this story shows, and yet we want to give them more power. They should be held responsible and made to compensate her for lost wages and the emotional distress I'm sure this is causing her.
We did that to get disability - SS is more interested in saving money by spending it on lawyers
I hate that she is going thru this. My mother went thru a similar incident years ago. With social security. She had worked under the wrong social security for years. It never did get fixed, and that's how it was. Our government never makes mistakes, according to them.

In 1973, Social security sent my father Charlie Watkins notification that he, Charlie Watkins was deceased, and that he, Charlie Watkins was eligible for Charlie Watkins death benefits. Someone had apparently worked for several years in Seattle under his Social security number and he lived in Sacramento.
Oh, that's interesting.... I know somebody who came from Mexico, who got an SS number from a coyote, a living person's number. They didn't adopt the citizen's identity (for one thing, they couldn't speak English at the time,) but what if they had?!! 😳
Afaik, they stayed in the country and applied for citizenship, but I met them at work and never knew them very well.

This happened to me. All of a sudden I stopped receiving my SS direct deposit. I first called them to ask why and they said they did not know why but it was cancelled. I went in person and told them that and they said there had to be a reason but could not find anything suspicious. Finally they looked at the Master Death Index and saw their error, a typo and immediately corrected it and sent me back deposits in my bank account. I was luckier, this person at their office had previously dealt with this error and because I missed the money I caught it right away. If I had not been receiving benefits yet it would have been a disaster like this poor woman as I would not have noticed it until credit cards and bank accounts were cancelled.
Seriously this is sad all because of someone's mistake man I'd be devastated.

This actually happened to me about 10 years ago. I went shopping in Louisiana and my card was denied by the company, because I was listed as deceased. It took many months and man hours to correct this problem.😢

It has happen to me and I still come up decease sometimes. Social Security Administration said they don’t understand what database it is coming from; they tried to fix it. The mixup happened with a person with the same full name including middle name and born on the same day, died. I can’t do certain things online; I have to come into a office. It’s a part of my life now.

My brother and I went through the same thing with my mom about 5 years ago. It took us a few months to get that mess straightened out, but in the meantime, there was no money or insurance coverage. I see this latest posting shows that nothing has changed when it comes to SS correcting THEIR mistake, not to mention the hoops you have to jump through. I'm glad her situation was resolved, but the amount of time and effort to get there is stupid!!
I can see what she’s going through, I was robbed years ago and needed a new card so I go down to get a new one showed driver license and I thought things were okay. I got my new card in the mail and I thought things were okay until I went online to fill out a form and that’s when things went crazy they were telling me I was not me after trying over and over I had to come in person three different times before someone saw the problem and the problem was the person that gave me the new card had two letters in my last name backwards and that’s after I gave them my drivers license,talk about fuming 😠😤🤬🤯🇺🇸🤔
That's why you should double check your information and before you leave they always make sure that everything is accurate

This news story has the most descriptive thumbnail and animation to illustrated what happened. My father died almost 2 years ago yet I still get his mail credit cards offers etc. as if he were still alive. But people need to realize that they are not a legal fiction. They are a living beings. Some might have taken advantage of this situation to live off the grid, work for themselves and take on a new legal identity.
This type of thing has been going on for a very long time. "Dr. Cliff Huxtable" made light of this issue all the way back in the late 80s. They've had more than sufficient notice to get their house in order, if they really gave a damn. But on the bright side, at least they didn't try to tell her that she's not a US citizen while they were at it.

This is a lie. It can be fixed although it shouldn't have happened. I work for SSA and her field office should have just accepted whatever verification documents she had. Crazy we need verification docs right,? But I had a claimant who called because someone from their family reported them as deceased and we required verification document such as a notarized letter. Did it take time? About 30 - 60 days of course because everything is slow. I've been here for some time but I'm ready to move on to Veterans Affairs. Too much making it alot on those of us they thoroughly service the public. After my interviews, I jump on the national line to assist because the queue was just overwhelmingly full.
Would you mind if I ask you a question about something? Pls? I want to ensure no one is trying to compromise mine and need to know how to find out?

I don't think this is that uncommon. It happened to my sister. It didn't take her long to get "re-alived," though. Certainly not 6 months.
I'd sue for pain and suffering from not getting medical care, emotional distress, lost wages, anguish, and slander!!!
This actually happens often, they told me I was dead when I went to get a replacement card.

Tennessee has allowed this fascism to grow. My Aunt is 92 and can't get her vital medications bc the state has started making people reapply for their Medicare every year. My Aunt depends on loved ones to take care of her and her Daughter passed unexpectedly on Labor Day. I'm worried for her and praying states stop allowing this inhumane corruption.
Same thing happened to my aunt and she had gotten so stressed didn’t know how to fix it. She passed last month. These ppl really need to be look into

There's a man in TN that served in WW2 that is being told he is not an American citizen. I saw it on YT recently. It is infuriating.
When someone dies, the spouse can file for surivor benefits for themselves and any minor children and a one time death payment of $255 BUT they must show proof with a certificate of death. So it seems crazy that the social security office can just mark someone dead without seeing actual proof with a certified death certificate and to know this has happen to others is disturbing. They sure want to take that money out our checks but when it comes time to pay they want to play games.
What incompetence! That should easily be fixed! I went through this with the Veterans administration! Same thing!!!! They finally got it fixed, months later! I had to go through a lot of hoops but finally got it fixed. And my point exactly it took a push on a key to delete me, but took forever to hit another key to reinstate me.

1. Go get the record of your live birth
2. Send that record with an affidavit of your existence to you Secretary of State.
3. When you received the acknowledgement with your documents certified.
4. Apply for a foreign national ein
5. Use that EIN in place of a Social Security number.

They did this to me too when my dad passed away! They had me down as dead instead of him. It took a lot of fighting to show them that I was alive.

This happened to a friend of mine years ago. This kind if mistake can ruin your life. Everything is put in hold. You basically can't do anything until the bureaucracy clears itself!

My grandma died in 2020 yet her daughter was getting money from the Governemnt for a whole year after. None of my grandmothers 4 children told any of her governement services that she was dead. She got $10,000 from the state of Colorado in unemployment benefits that never once went to my grandmothers estate or her past due bills. I paid them all, her grandchild. None of her children came through with help in any way

And that’s what happens with the government if someone does something by mistake it is on you and it can take you months and even years to get the mistake rectify it’s insane! I lost my Social Security for about three months just because someone decided to say oh she’s working and she makes a substantial salary when I did not! Because of someone’s mistake, I had to go back to the Social Security office over and over again until it was rectified. It’s ridiculous.

This happened to my husband when he tried get credit. It came back he was deceased and pending estate. Took him 3 years to fix.
A simple mistake from the SSA im currently dealing with is that they are claiming that I owe them $11,000 and are taking it out of my monthly check to pay them back. Yet everyone I spoke to has no proof of reason on their computers. Im so stressed out from barley making it. I will eventually die from this.
