      simple tip to at least get out of bronze, learn anti air and anti air optimal punishes, cause if i was playing against you, from the moment i realized you didnt anti air at least 3 of my jumps, im just going to keep doing it, and thats free pressure, or if i actually hit you, its a free optimal combo punish for at least 25% hp... again, practice anti airs bro, super important in those ranks

    Bronze: Learn to anti-air. It gets harder later, but against bronze players you should be able to anti air 10 times out of 10 against these jump heavy nuts. If you can't, you already found your problem. Practice it in training and get used to setting the dummy to all its options. A big part of this is spacing make sure you set yourself for the spacing to anti air, but you can literally just do that all match and beat bronze players.
    Silver: Learn gameplans and risk reward, and execution. Does your opponent have a fireball? Learn to punish it wiith anti-fireball moves. Does your opponent like to dash? Practice stopping dashes by buffering lights and fast buttons in neutral. For risk reward it's very important that options like wake up super and DP be very very limited. IN FACT just don't use them. Not yet. Yes they're viable but you aren't learning to use your EX elsewhere where there is no risk (confirmed) and pure reward (guaranteed damage, real punishes). Now's also a good time to practice defense. take a few rounds when you're ahead and just see how long you can block, punish, and tech. I'm just assuming you know oki by now, too, and obviously stop throwing out unsafe special moves without a confirm.
    Gold: You have a gameplan now but work on your execution until these options are instant and intuitive. You will start running over gold players when you can formulate gameplans faster than them. You should know delay tech by now, which gives you a perfect defense in theory, but that stops as soon as shimmies come in, so make a note of players and characters who like to shimmy and just practice not teching them now. You should also start whiff punishing and stop whiffing yourself, and if you don't know what those *actually* are ask somebody because they aren't as reaction based as they seem.
    Edit 2/2/22: been a while. So for beating plats I found polishing both execution/optimization to make sure you get the damage you're owed, and decision making are important. Jab check dashes, and anti air their trickier jump-ins. Use training to figure out how, but jump back jab is a good starting point. In nooch it's all about spacing your chosen AA button. Also, When I say decision making, I think it's most important not to view things in context of right or wrong not because it worked, but only because it can work consistently. A great example is EX DPs. They work if you guess right, but if you do the math the 120 damage is almost never worth the risk. It's their turn. Blocking ALSO prevents them doing 300 damage to you and does not have the risk. This is why checking dashes is important. Now they have no way of getting combos off on you outside of neutral and you can start developing character specific gameplans to help you in diamond because each match up has its own decision making rules. Maybe you HAVE to ex dp sometimes to get out of that mika left/right, and sometimes you gotta realize you can't jump at people with polished AAs. Regardless, if you go against a platinum player, do your optimal combos for damage or oki, then don't drop your execution and stop their dashes/whacky platinum gimmicks when you will win. They get flustered when they lose life lead repeatedly and resort to very poor, unoptimized approaches just to be random to get back in.
    Also, for all these levels, watch players better than you and steal blockstrings or combo extensions you didn't know about.

      Dude this is kinda really great insight. I am a Gold Sagat. After reading this i realize i tech way too much esp. in corners and got counter hitted way too much. Thank you. Learning to not tech is gonna be my training now.

      Yo mike thanks for the advice I would like to speak to you more...im a gold Ryu/Alex and because of lag shit is type hard to execute difficult combos...

    • @mikethegreat4296
      @mikethegreat4296 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gallonthegreat7036 Sometimes SF5 just lags and you drop confirms. It happens and you have to move on. If it's happening so much you notice it's holding you back, or it seems to be happening to you more than your opponents, it's time to start checking your replays on CFN with inputs on and verify that your inputs were clean and that you weren't mashing any inputs (it's fundamentally inconsistent). It's completely normal to experience a loss of execution when transferring from the training room to a real match as more of our brain is dedicated elsewhere, so if you are noticing consistency problems with your combos but only in real matches, you can still practice those combos. Even though you're never failing them in training mode, you'll still improve consistency outside of it.
      Also this is more anecdotal, but breaks for me help my execution a load. If I practice for a few hours a day like normal (training with matchmaking on) some consistency issues don't get ironed out. The next day I'll do training mode only to see roughly how much I fail them, then wait and see if coming back helps. It helps me for muscle memory type problems not not reactions, so stopping dashes and anti airing with combos would get worse, for instance.

    This type of video is important for the community. I've been a big fan of Smug for a while, and this type of video increases my respect even further. Sometimes I feel like some players that are really good in the FGC feel like they are too good to help bad players out. We need more pros like Smug reaching out to the smaller guys out there to help the FGC grow.

  • @TheBlackSage7
    @TheBlackSage7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    From my experience what stops people from getting out of Bronze up to Gold is that they do highly unsafe moves far too often, jump too much or in general know little to no frame data.
    Most times just knowing how to anti air consistently and block is enough to get someone out of Bronze. There's no shortcut to moving up in sfv so it's a lot of time learning frame data, learning character matchups, practicing combos, frame traps and punishes. The more you learn and the more experience you get will help you guys rank up.
    Also while most don't (myself included) like watching replays it's definitely vital to doing so as you can see if the setups your opponent is doing is real or fake which gets you ready to face that same opponent again or that character in general.

    That’s a really nice series! I like that you also picked a match where the guy won to start out - I think that (speaking as a pretty garbage player myself) it can be discouraging to have a match you get washed on reviewed on stream and showed to everyone, because it feels like you’re doing nothing right sometimes. I also like your approach of being really positive about the whole process - like I’ve seen a few match review series and some of them get a bit too condescending sometimes, your sense of humor worked great. Really good series dude! Can never catch streams but I love watching the youtube videos.

    You know what's even more interesting is that the Akuma is literally playing like he's listening to Smug's advice. You can tell that for their rank/level of play that they at least are using fundamentals but not over extending themselves because they probably don't have the muscle memory for for complex combos and set ups yet.
    i say that because you and I know that an Akuma with a full stick of butter is trying to style on you every chance they can get.

    • @planetjanet3845

    • @kevingriffith6011
      @kevingriffith6011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@planetjanet3845 The big issue I'm noticing with that Akuma is that he's not *doing* anything in neutral, always waiting for what the opponent does. This will serve him well probably all the way up to diamond, but eventually he's going to have to learn that he's got to stick things out in neutral or the opponent is never going to make any mistakes if they know what they're doing. That, oki, and optimizing his combos.

    • @jaquelinegillisfrancine2923
      @jaquelinegillisfrancine2923 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was great, Smug helping the commoners (not excluding myself)! And funny as always.
    In all seriousness though, I think it's great that you're coaching a bronze player, as opposed to higher level player. Bronze players are (probably) closer to when they came in, so it's helping new(er) people not giving up. Also more advanced players are probably already better at finding their own tutorials, information, etc. And to be totally honest, I'm way closer to bronze than platinum myself, so I can relate:D.

    This is awesome SMUG! A great way to help the community. I like the positivity, hopefully it encourages others to keep playing. I think you could speed up the commentary so you could get through more matches, but still, cool!
