    Awesome guide man! Very easy to understand even for someone who never played with the job, and it's the first time I see someone actually spend some time explaining how to properly use the job before you reach level cap. I hope this turns into a series for all jobs, 'cause that would be extremely helpful.

    So, I actually only started the game a week ago because of your videos. Wasn't sure if I wanted to start it, but I chose to, you seemed to have a lot of fun playing the game! So, after starting I decided to go for PLD and my friend helped me do a lot of the shit for it and then this video came out and I've had an even easier time actually learning about it.
    I'm not very far in, I'm iLv113, Lv52, but I'm slowly getting there.
    I'll be subscribing because of this :P

      I have to say Melon Queen... first, welcome to the game, I'm really flattered that you picked this game up on my recommendation and way to go on your progress, that's epic and awesome. Second, your name is awesome, and I love it. :)
      Hope you enjoy your time in game, thanks for being a tank in the game and let us know if you have any questions. :D

    Tysm for posting! Aside from a few pronunciation issues (which might genuinely confuse some newer players who have never heard these things pronounced this way before), this was an awesome video. Here are rough phonetic pronunciations of the words in question:
    What you called "Matera" several times in the video is pronounced -- Muh-TEER-ee-uh.
    What you called "Requisite" several times in video is pronounced -- Ray-QUEE-es-COT.
    Thanks again!

    One thing to add, if you're clever about it you can use the RoH combo, FB-->Riot Blade-->fight or flight (wait til when the GCD is close to recharge)-->then use Goring Blade. Two Royal Authorities, and if you did it right you can snapshot another Goring blade Combo and Requiescat before starting your magic phase.
    not really essential per se, but if you're ever in a bind where you need to do more damage, that's a good place to start.
    Tenacity is good, but only if you can get it over 2000 points, where it becomes a 24-hour reprisal...which is insane but nigh impossible to achieve at this point.
    Better to start with Direct hit until you can achieve over 2000 crit where the potential dps outdoes DH. Determination is a good follow up and SS is kinda your only dump stat.
    Glad you touched on only using Total Eclipse for groups over 3. Not a lot of folks realize that.
    good video overall.

  • @kos-mosxenosaga2492
    @kos-mosxenosaga2492 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This patch it's recommended to have Direct hit only. Tenacity gives a lower overall boost in defense. Content as of now damage wise now is pretty forgiving. If you go for best in slot, you will have enough tenacity for the content.

    One thing you mentioned a little but I really would stress to newer tanks: using cooldowns, in dungeons: use them for pulls (don't just save for the boss). There are many tanks out there that wall to wall and don't pop a single cooldown...

    • @Work2Game
      @Work2Game  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Skatedudeguy great point, and I agree, hopefully that's underscored by the cooldown recast because I agree, I feel new players often sit on their cooldowns :(

    • @StuUngar
      @StuUngar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Skatedudeguy It’s easy to overlook them when doing rotations. Especially for people like me who don’t main as a tank. I macro most of my cooldowns to my abilities to make sure they proc when available. There’s a few that I don’t macro like Convalescence. But the ones I don’t have long cool downs and are important for boss battles.

  • @RavencroftRoost

    I wanted to note here (not sure if you've noticed or not but I've done a couple experiments and proved it) that while yes vitality is important but strength also REDUCES the dmg you take as a Paladin

  • @dominic123102
    @dominic123102 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Apart from the tenacity part, a pretty good guide overall! You only want to have about 1000 tenacity as a soft cap ( a bit like when SMN needed a soft cap for spell speed) which requires no melds, and then legit everything is melded with Direct hit apart from the accs that have the 1st grade 6 strength, then the overmelds direct hit :)

    • @dominic123102
      @dominic123102 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      only if your ilvl is really low you need tenacity melds, i was ilvl 323 and 0 tenacity melds, managed Neo exdeath with ease

    • @Work2Game
      @Work2Game  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ImProBowlesyy HD thanks for the feedback, I love direct hit as a star, but chose to highlight tenacity as it relates to strength, I'll do a deeper dive into end game raising stars in a follow up Advanced Paladin guide or I'll blend the three tanks together. :) but really good note :)

    Thanks for this video. I'm a level 65 paladin right now but I'm happy I watched this video so I could figure out Holy spirit. I had no idea where it went in the rotation at all. I guess I just need to wait till level 68 to fully realize what I need.
    Also, this video made me realize something! Are y'all ever going to do a materia video? That is definitely one part of the game I don't fully understand.

    Nice, Guide! I love PLD, I have been very hesitant of tanking the lvl 70 Dungeons ( I main BLM) But I think I'm ready. I did get pulled into a Lakshmi run as OT and ended up MT. that was interesting and a new experience lol
    I know I'm a meh Tank but I try lol and I will have to remember the healing rotation that shield seems helpful for sure.

    • @Work2Game
      @Work2Game  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't be afraid to let your party know that you're still "newish" to the Tank for the content, and that should help set the expectation at the start of the content rater then if you run into trouble. :)

  • @bonetower
    @bonetower 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This helped out a bit, been trying to figure out proper rotations for harder content. Also a good combo for heavy damage events in raids i would suggest divine Veil with Passage of Arms, the mitigation seems to stack (for now at least).

      +Drew Wogen in truth, being that I struggle with words so much, it kept me off of TH-cam for so long... one day I might release a behind the scenes video on how I make my vids and prep, and script, and repeat... what I need is an app that I put in a word and it reads it back to me so I can practice... my issue is I've been saying things one way for so long it's hard to break the habit. I might do a post on this at some point, as I'm sure people might find how I used to say Chocobo hilarious :)

    Also, i think your math is a little bit screwed on one of the moves at least. Total eclipse means an attack of 110 potency to all enemies nearby, not increasing multiplicitively as more enemies crowd around you. If that were the case, it would be stated in the move description, and would be completely wiping out groups of enemies in basically no time.
    The potency formula is as such. Over three seconds (1 server tick), all auto attacks do 100 potency's worth of damage. If the weapon's delay is, say, 2.25sec (75% of 3.00), the auto attacks will be 75 potency hits per swing. If you weapon's delay is over 3sec, your auto attack swings will hit for more than 100 potency per swing. It scales linearly.
    This means that a 300 potency attack deals damage equivalent to 9 seconds of auto attacks for any given class. This is not a constant value between classes (3sec of WAR AAs =/= 3sec of MNK AAs). It is, however completely consistent within a given class. A Warrior's Heavy Swing, for example, deals 150 potency of damage. The actual damage of the ability should be half the damage of an Inner Beast, which has a potency of 300.
    This can be tested easily with or without a parser, bearing in mind that you should account for + or - 5% damage variance of all direct damage skills, spells, and attacks, or the numbers will be off.

    I would add that for 50+ one flash and circle of scorn is more than enough, and not having that second flash taking up a gcd is nice and you can get into damaging be it with aoe or hate rotation to damage and gain hate. And for total eclipse make sure someone has goad or tactician as your tp will drain fast. When it comes to clemency, i wouldnt use it unless your healer dies in a 4 man dungeon, as in higher-end content your requiescat+holy spirit is your dps peak. For hallowed ground, if there is a fight with certain mechanica like stormsplitter in susano ex, its good to save it. Using stormsplitter as an example most paladins, myself included, tend to pop hallowed for the first stormsplitter so you don't need to swap, and in turn the dps of both tanks wont suffer during the swap, especially if the other tank is a warrior or dark knight. When it comes to role actions, 100% of the time you should have awareness and rampart. For fights with tank swaps, provoke and shirk, and provoke on all bosses just in case the main tank dies when you are off tanking. For dungeons i tend to take convalescence to help with large pulls, and anticipation. For instances that require a lot of mitigation, reprisal is very helpful. The cross role stun isnt needed as a paladin in most cases as you have a gcd stun, but can be helpful if a situation arises where you need a stun but dont want to sacrifice a gcd. Ultimatum is useless on all three tanks (except for less confident warriors sometimes), but for paladin dont bother. For interject, ive never taken it, not really necessary at least for me, never had issues without it. Also quickly about requiescat timing, if you dont have to move and can just spam holy spirit, 5 holy spirits will take you to the end of the requiescat timer and will reduce your mp so you camt use another. If it comes to a situation where requiescat is up, but you have to move for mechanics, try and get as many holy spirits as you can in with requiescat, but then also keep going when the buff is down intil youve done five as it is still 400 potency each. For cover, it can help in some untankable situations like the second boss of qarn normal, but in most cases if you lose aggro you should be getting it back in about a second. I think ive only ever used cover once (apart from using it cos the tether is cool) and it didnt realy help.

    I very rarely have to use my savage blade/RoH combo when im tanking and have no problem keeping aggro, generally with trials, raids or 70 dungeons i start out with shield lob, CoS and then a flash or two. From there my rotation is just my goring blade/ royal authority combo plus the occasional flash, obviously spirits within, shield swipe and CoS when theyre off cooldown as well. Am i tanking wrong? Most regular mobs can be stunned regardless. However any stun can only be applied three times per mob before a stun effect wont work anymore.

    Also you never mentioned shield bash. In my rotations I use it all the time. It has a limit to 3 uses per mob. You want to use it all the time as it reduces the damage you take. (Target 1) Fast Blade. (Target 2) Savage Blade, (Target 3) Rage of halone - Flash - , Shield bash Target 3, Shield bash Target 1, Circle of Scorn - Fight or Flight - Spirits Within. This combo works because you stun last two targets of a pull and you buff Spirits Within with full damage because of stunned enemies not aaaaattacking you. If you have a good healer that initial damage you take would be fully healed. Thing is I play with no HUD on screen for about 4 years so I developed my own special way to play. This way I rarely have to use cds at all because enemies are already stunned.

      When starting you can only pick between PLD and WAR... aka (Gladiator, and Marauder)... What type of role are you most interested?
      Do you like doing more damage, and have a larger life pool? (if so pick WAR/MRD)
      Or do you like to have better DEF, and ability to protect others? (if so pick PLD/GLD)
      My personal preference has been PLD, but with an update to WAR with the last patch, I'm trying it out again. :)

    • @rafaelcastillo670
      @rafaelcastillo670 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've played all tanks up to 70, done recent savage content and started as a WAR because PLD was veeeery boring and different back then, but you should start with a PLD, it teaches you to use your cooldowns, you're a bit more open to stancedance and you get both of them very close to each other, and eventually you start getting fun tools to dps with, which is extremely important. WAR is a risk/reward class and doesnt have much utility to others until late ingame. Playing PLD forces you to learn these concepts and it will end up being easier for you to apply these things to not just the other 2 tanks, but to all classes in general. Thats just my opinion though, go with whatever you like!

    • @morganmcinroy4211
      @morganmcinroy4211 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just started as a gladiator and I know you probably have already picked it up or changed your mind but the game is pretty forgiving at first and there's a training system for each class that teaches you the mechanics. There's also a lot of nice people who can help you out because some stuff the game does not tell you. I haven't played a mmo in years and I'm finding ffxiv to be very user friendly. I did my first dungeon as a tank and it was super stressful but also fun!

    • @Work2Game
      @Work2Game  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome. :) Tenacity in this video isn't telling people that is what they should meld (exclusivity), but that it's a tank specific stat that increases defense and attack. There is debate in the community about it, and when it's beneficial too, but beyond that as the game stands right now, especially for Savage/Ex content DH is a clear stand out winner, even though we've been told that Tenacity will get better with time, we'll have to wait and see on that. :)

  • @raistresrobes
    @raistresrobes 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would say tenacity isnt as worth it as of now, unless you are going for world first. Its better to go direct hit or crit hit. Also cover especially in raid and extreme trial content is best used on the other tank if you are off tanking. If you are main then its ok for the healer but these days we pld are usually off tanks anymore.
