    Gado Bravo Inn
The "Estalagem do Gado Bravo", located in Recta do Cabo (between Vila Franca de Xira and Porto Alto), was inaugurated on October 2, 1952. It was built by businessman Joaquim Augusto Faria, through his firm "Gado Bravo, Lda. "Taking advantage of the inauguration of the" Ponte Marechal Carmona "in the previous year, on December 30, 1951, which taking this road on the main access road to the Algarve, would certainly benefit the Estalagem a lot, which was verified .
Regarding the opening, an excerpt from the news in the "Diário de Lisboa": «The inn will provide Portuguese aficionados and tourists with a permanent bullfighting environment, especially on the eve of bullfights. Featuring a balcony facing the flatland, it will allow guests to see bulls at close range in the field. Also in a small private square, you will be able to deal with cows and herds, in view of the inn's regulars. » The first manager of "Estalagem Gado Bravo", whose operation was transferred to the company "Hotéis Internacionais, Lda.", Which already operated the "Estalagem da Lezíria", was José Carlos Baptista helped by his wife Maria José Baptista, who with his son Vítor Baptista, they also lived here. This 4-star inn consisted of a restaurant, wine cellar, party room, inn and a small bullring.
For decades, the "Estalagem do Gado Bravo", already the ex-libris of Ribatejo lezíria, served as a meeting point for farmers, cattle ranchers and bullfighters, but where important figures of politics, culture and artistic life also spent the night, for example, Paul Mccartney on 11 June 1965, and having been visited by the Queen of England Isabel II in February 1957. On the stages of the hall decorated with Ribatejo motifs or the courtyard, between the main building and the Toiros, Amália Rodrigues, Hermínia Silva, Fernando Farinha or Alfredo Marceneiro passed by, just to name a few.
Paul Mccartney and Jane Asher with manager José Carlos Baptista and autograph of the artist.
This Inn, and its small bullring, would also serve as a backdrop for some scenes from two Portuguese films that were shot here. They were: "Sangue Toureiro" directed by Augusto Fraga, in 1958 and "A Ultima Pega" directed by Constantino Esteves, in 1964.
And since we are talking about films, I take the opportunity to remember that the name "Gado Bravo" had already been used for the title of a Portuguese phono-film, made in 1934 by António Lopes Ribeiro. Here is the poster.
In 1975 the Baptista family definitively left the management of "Estalagem Gado Bravo" and thus began its decay, which culminated in its closure in March 1989, aggravated by the fact that the owner heirs wanted to sell the space. Already owned by "Banco Espírito Santo" (now "Novo Banco") and unsuccessful attempts to recover and resuscitate the space, what remained of the inn has been the target of theft and vandalism over the ages. They even sold steaks in a caravan next to the inn's facade. Today it is the preferred location for the Traffic Brigade's "Stop" operations.
The property and the 30,000 m2 land are currently for sale for € 376,000.00
