    Hi Kim! I'm so glad I found your video yesterday. This is the first year I'm growing tomatoes (or a vegetable plant, for that matter), and I have four gorgeous and robust plants that are blooming beautifully, but I found two dried up flowers. I am in an area where heat is quite high, so I decided to shade them with some old lace tablecloths I have, but were a little too short. I was so happy when you suggested a sheer curtain. They're the perfect length. I placed them yesterday and the little guys seem to be very happy. Thank you! 😊

    I needed to see this. Even in a greenhouse it can get mighty hot. I have four vents and a Louver vent and a door that are always open during the day. With these heat waves here in Alberta, I now know what I can do to save my plants.

    I’ve seen a new approach. Above your garden, install solar panels on a pergola. The panels can be moved for full shade or varying degrees of shade. All the power is from the panels. I thought that was a clever way to protect the vegetables. It’s an alternative to a greenhouse.

    How do you deal with smoke from forest fires? The whole month of July has been so smoky, blocking out the sun that the temps are lower than normal. It has also been a very dry year, doing a deep watering every second day. I think because of this, what little plants I do have are not producing as much as they should. I have 3 zucchini off 5 plants, and everything else is way behind. My first frost is mid September and I don’t think I will get much more produce. I didn’t plant as much as I wanted so I wasn’t expecting much this year but thought I would get more than 3 zucchini

    • @CaliKim29

      Oh no, My Backyard Gourds - that's such a bummer! Forst and foremost, make sure the air quality is OK before you go outside. Rinse off your plants with a gentle spray of water to clean the ash. When you bring your harvests inside, soak in a sink full of water with a few TB vinegar. Rinse thoroughly and peel any veggies that are severely affected. Drought is very challenging as well, as the plants like the deep watering and natural minerals in rain to develop those deep roots and green new growth. Do the best you can, make sure to keep them well watered and fertilize regularly. I'd start some veggies indoors so you have things growing inside too. Good luck, hang in there!

    I live in central Ca and it’s over 100 June through September. I’ve tried everything and my plants stop producing and blossoms fall off. Should I even bother? I feel like summer is our “frost” and I should just start plants indoors super early to harvest everything in early June?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that, Kirsten. Wow, so hot this year in central Cali, it can be brutal on the garden. Sure, I'd start as early as you can in spring for early harvests. Actually, my cherry tomatoes always do really well. I can't get big tomatoes to grow though . My cherry tomato plants are heavy with tomatos. All of my bigger varieties though only have like 1 tomato. Every freaking year.
