This reminds me so much of Gnomoria, a game I have so much affection for, for which have never quite found a substitute.
Same, it was my first love in that genre.

Everyone loves to be pretentious about DF's UI but it's geniunely awful. The game would be 100x more popular if the dev had actually given a shit about usability.
Here's a thing, I love the depth and freedom of dwarf fortress, so a few years ago I wanted to get into it with all this software that made it more accessible. It didn't last for very long. After another year or two I came back again, this time just wanting to get used to it completely vanilla for some reason. And I actually got used to it just fine. What I did is that I had a DF Wiki opened up in my tablet to help me out with information and then I started to recognize the ASCII sprites like second nature. And I had a blast, the immersion and simulation is just so satisfying that the simple controls and UI didn't matter to me at all after a while.
With that being said, I think if you have some patience and really like sandbox gameplay, then nothing beats DF, hands down. But most of the people don't have that, they just get frustrated quickly (can't blame them though). I also think it's simple visual nature allowed the development of the simulation to get so deep anyways, so I think that's good. And what's even better, like Playasum already mentioned, you can use user made software to help you visualize the game more easily.
Though one thing I hate is that when you stop playing for some period and come back, it feels a little sloppy again and takes time to get back into it.
I thought i was taking crazy pills in not liking Dwarf fortress for its U.I.
I think they will be aiming to improve it a bit later on, but no doubt it's not easy to get into. I find the biggest issue to be having to use keys only. If there was mouse input supported, damn, that'd be sweet. Don't really mind ASCII.
The dev of DF himself said multiple times his UI was completely awful and made no sense but it's probably a ton of work to change it
What do you mean Rimworld Meets Dwarf Fortress? It's like saying "A 90% water alcohol solution meets a 20% water alcohol solution". It's the same damn thing, only one is much more pure. It would be more appropriate to say "Little bit less casualized Rimworld", or "Another futile attempt to add graphics to DF, only this time slightly better than others"
My god, this game looks very interesting. I'll definitely consider a purchase.

This is a fun little title, that has a lot of promise. I'm looking forward to it being finished. If you start a new game with Advanced, you can change some of the map settings, and choose where you start. You will be able to see all of the biomes (from forest to tundra to caves to even waste). You can turn off the vision fog in settings if you want, though some people would consider that cheating.

I have wanted something to replace Dwarf Fortress for So long but I am afraid this will not be it....Just yet.
Oh dear god the lighting is just AWFUL....
I understand they wanted to go for a retro aesthetic, but incorporating something that was just objectively ugly and a tech limitation such as banding artifacts around light sources is odd. Why would the dev intentionally include that?
Next, lets remove anti-aliasing and let the 3d terrain be rendered in crisp 680x460 without any smoothing. Because retro!

This looks like a cross between Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress.
i think i might like this alot more than HearthStone. Those 2d sprites in the 3d world are very aesthetically pleasing.
Of course, i would prefer if you play it Splat. I find myself enjoying watching your videos more than playing the games myself.
If you're a fan of 3D worlds and 2D sprites, did you ever play Ragnarok Online? It's an older MMO, but pretty good for its day and had similar graphics 3D+2D).
I bought this shitty game, after you got some constructions done the games starts to get more and more slow reaching at 5 fps in a pc tha runs cities skylines at ultra. I asked the refound burt after 4 hours playes i doubt i will be refound. Shame on me, shame on steam, THIS GAME IS A SCAM

Why worry about ladders when you could just make 1 block high steps, like Minecraft, for them to walk up to get to the top layers?

this looks interesting. Hope it doesnt go the route of Gnomoria where its "released" and forgotten but has a TON of balance/AI issues still and thus really difficult to actually enjoy.
Rimworld is already dwarf fort light. I realize uncreative people just rip off ideas but this game is trying to land a ridiculous sweet spot between two already robust products. Makes me want to play rim world, or dwarf fort, or berate creatively lazy people.
This looks like a better Gnomoria, with controls from RimWorld and gameplay from Dwarf Fortress; I'm kinda interested...
Correction - 0.43 - best fantasy race ever invented. If its a made up race how did they hire all those Dwarves to act in Lord of the Rings... I love your work but Dwarves are totally real and I love them... we need to dig more tunnels to find where their cities are hidden.

From what I can gather the game went into a sort of development hell where it took ages to address any of it issues, and hasn't come close to Rimworld let alone Dwarf Fortress when it comes to complex simulation or management.

Have you seen the Octopath Traveler demo for the Nintendo Switch? It has a super nice sprite with high res texture art style.

I doubt. Zach & Tarn have been working on this game for such a long time now. It's a decade old.
Apparently Zach and Tarn plan to continue DF long into the future... (as in, 2050 future), barring a world ending cataclysm.

Check out Gnomoria. It's an abandoned project but in it's current status absolutely playable. Looks and feels much better than this one.

Hey! Since you like that Graphics-type you ought to know it's official name. This game is what's called a 2.5D game.
2.5D games use mixed assets. USUALLY it's like this one; 3D world 2D actors. But it can be the other way around too.
You should lay torches down so you can the us views can see whats going on.

Reminds me more of Towns tbh, just with a fantasy premise. Granted towns has that premise too, in a way, but the whole
"splicing/splitting" grid like map that you can go up n down levels is very much Towns like.

15:40 Seems taken entirely from Dwarf Fortress - the explanation there was that elves craft their wood with magic, and consider 'mundane' woodcutting and wood-crafting to be immensely barbarous; akin to murder and mutilation.

Final impression: this looks exactly like Gnomoria. I'd like to see a play-though which got around military and enemies.
