It's the spoken part of The River on the lives '75-85. (He used to go stand in a phone booth for hours because his dad hated him and wanted him out of the house)
My favorite version of my favorite Springsteen tune. It's too bad that he skips a verse though: "The jury brought in a guilty verdict and the judge he sentenced me to death Midnight in a prison storeroom with leather straps across my chest" Still great though.

First off I'm a Bruce fan and I think The "Nebraska" album is by and large a masterpiece "My Father's House " par example But this song is as awful as Dylan romanticizing "Crazy" Joe Gallo. Nothing to empathize with. They were murders plain and simple

This song is about a 50's Spree killer named Charels Starkweather Who Killed 11 people in Nabraska with his 14 year old girlfriend.
The movie Badlands is also about that and that's where the Baton thing at the start comes from.
