Thanks for showing alterations of a piece of men's clothing. Most sites focus only on women's clothes. I'm a guy, a sewing beginner, and I appreciate your attention to men's clothes as well as your clear explanations.
Thanks Angela. Really well done demonstration. I like when tips get dropped in to a demo, like explaining why you pin the bigger placket and how you marked the button hole and how you figure the pleats out. Super helpful and a great way to teach.
Amazing! GREAT instructions, very clear and straightforward - there are other sleeve shortening videos but I haven’t found one that shows how to remove the placket. I need to shorten sleeves often and the cost has been prohibitive forcing me to find out how to do it myself! You have given me the confidence to actually try it myself! Thank you!
As a beginner I liked your use of that ruler (bone folder?) as a pinning guide, and also rubbing the chalk through the button hole to mark the position for the button, thank you.
Peter Bryenton Thank you! For your comment. I appreciate the feedback. As far as marking the button placement, anything it takes to make it accurate and easy! :)
Follow up, I watched your video first then several others, and yours is by far the most professional. A couple actually didnt even move the placket, just cut the desired length from the sleeve, the sewed the cuff back on. Thanks so much!
Thanks for this. I work in a men's clothing shop and was explaining to a customer today how a tailor could shorten his dress shirt sleeves. It's a bit more complicated than I thought.
Excellent video! Thank you so much. My husband has been begging me to shorten a couple of his brand new Ralph Lauren shirts and I've been terrified to try until I watched your video. His shirts are like the one you demonstrated - with the small and large plackets. I think I can handle this now - thanks so much. I am now a subscriber to your channel :) !!
Thank you so much for doing a straight forward and simple video. Been trying to figure out how to shorten shirt sleeves forever now. Going to go have to buy some cheap shirts to practice on.
I am about to open a men's store and will offer alterations to shirts and pants (not by me) and thought it was important to know how to do it. Great job
This is such a great video because it's all step by step. I'm a new subscriber because I have short arms. By the time I get a shirt to fit my neck and chest, I look like a little kid in his dad's shirt. This is a huge help. I've got about 15 shirts that need to be altered like this.
Thank you! I've just watched a longer video on this subject that didn't remove the packet and re-position, as you did. Plus you method of re-attaching the cuff much simpler and appears to be easier to do. I have short arms & too long sleeves have plagued me all of my life. Now, I know how simple it is to correct. Again, thank you. Subscribed.
Great video very professional and meticulous work thanks for the info. I'm a professional mass production garment cutter and recently got into altering my own clothes, thanks for sharing I'm looking forward to learn more techniques from your channel, cheers from California.
Me too! If I can get this down, I can say goodbye to all the ill-fitting shirts I'm always stuck with. I can make a shirt from scratch, but altering a shirt always makes me feel like I'm going to freak out.
sometimes getting a fresh shirt out of the package the sleeves are 1 1/2" to 2" too long. it's a little bit of work, but the results are great. Thank-you.
Excellent. Just what I was looking for. I didn’t quite understand why it’s easier to make the pleats on the right sleeve first, but I’ll take your word for it because you obviously know what you are doing. Perhaps it will become obvious as I work through the project myself. Another question - as an amateur but experienced sewer, what features should I look for in a seeeing machine? I sm looking to replace my old machine. Also, do you recommend having a serger?
If you plan to just do little sewing jobs; mending and alterations, you can go to Walmart and pick up a cheap one there. The thing you need to keep in mind is that those machines aren't the same thing that you'll get from a dealer even if it's the same brand and model number. The motors are weaker and louder. If your budget doesn't allow for a better one, than by all means get the Walmart brand. When I was able, I bought an Elna Explore 160 because I needed a quiet machine and one with a high presser foot lift. I do a LOT of sewing and the range of things I sew are wide. I bought mine from a dealer and paid about $350. The one drawback from these newer machines is that they're so light. If I'm sewing something thick and heavy, my machine will actually move on the table when I'm adjusting the item that I'm working on and that's frustrating. I hope this answers your question.
Hello! If you need to take off a large amount like 3”, I find the cuff hole too large even with pleats. Can you show us how to narrow a dress shirt sleeve with a flat felled seam please?
Angela I love your tutorials, but on this vlog I think it would be more helpful if you showed the unpicking of the cuff/sleeve a bit slower at the start, and to show us how a shirt cuff is constructed so we can gain a bit of confidence and understand how to put it back once you trim the actual cuff.
Having tried this I am having great difficulty in sewing the big part of the placket round and across etc. You didn't show how you hold all the material out of the way while sewing very well so we can follow. Please can you do a video that shows your technique a bit clearer.
Western shirts have large cuffs three buttons. I love the fit of a western shirt but do not like the three button cuff is it possible to reduce the cuff and make it a two button cuff like a standard shirt. I’d love to see that video. Everybody I talk to says it’s too complicated
Cinnamin Barry I find it harder because you may have to recut the armscye and if you make a mistake, it will be more visible on the shoulder. But if it’s something you would like to do, I would encourage you to buy a shirt from the Goodwill or use one that you don’t intend to use anymore and just practice. What I may find difficult, you may find very easy to do.
thanks alot, I can use this method to shorten my workout pants, it has a zipper on the bottom. But it's a nylon material, what needle and thread should I use for it?
I don’t sew for anyone anymore, but this would have been a $15 -$20 alteration. It really depends on where you live. In some areas, it might cost $10 and others, people would gladly pay $35.
Just what I needed. I can never find a shirt in my size with the correct sleeve length and your video gives me the confidence to alter them myself.
Very informative, just what I needed to have confidence in altering hubby's shirts. You make it look so easy! Thanks so much.
Thank you! I hope you find it easy. It definitely gets easier, the more you do them.

I really love the idea of fast forwarding the video and going straight to the point without any boring moment. Simple and straight!

Straight to the point, short, practical and very helpful. That's all I needed to subscribe.
Thanks for the upload.
You make this look sooo easy!! I'm going to try it on my new flannel shirts. I've probably got 2 inches to shorten! Thank You!
Good luck! The more you do a particular alteration, the easier it gets!

Wow I just love your video. I never take off the packet . But I will from now on ! Learn something new everyday.
Great illustration, shown where easy-to-follow.
Thanks for this. I work in a men's clothing shop and was explaining to a customer today how a tailor could shorten his dress shirt sleeves. It's a bit more complicated than I thought.
I never would have attempted it if I hadn’t been taught how at the mens shop I worked at, but after you do it a few times, it’s pretty easy.
Excellent video! Thank you so much. My husband has been begging me to shorten a couple of his brand new Ralph Lauren shirts and I've been terrified to try until I watched your video. Oldtimer Lee I’ve seen others cut the placket too. Looks very awkward and really shortens the vent.
Good afternoon I have 6 shirts to alter and thanks for the information you saved my life blessed day
Millions thanks to you. The video saved my new shirt
Rakib Hasan That’s great to hear! I’m glad it helped you.
Thank you! Just purchased with too long sleeves but now I know how to alter to fit me!
Good video. I like how you get to the point right away.
I try :)
I’m going to try this asap. Thanks. Mila

Thank you Angela for this very informative and interesting video. Clearly explained. Neat job. Thank you. Jose from Melbourne
Wow you make it look so easy and I love your simple techniques.
Thank you! Yes, I like to keep it simple. No need to complicate things :)
That tutorial was brilliant . Thank you so much.
Very helpful. The person tried the shirt on first and you measured the 1 1/2 inches needed for adjustment.
@Angela Woosley i was wondering if you can make a video on sewing the placket step by step and how you sew back a button. Tanx!
Clear and precise. Thank you.
excellent. I only need this done on like 20 shirts...time to dive in.
The more you do, the easier it gets! Lol

I just recorded the “easy Peasy” video on how to shorten dress shirt sleeves. It will be published on Thursday.
sometimes getting a fresh shirt out of the package the sleeves are 1 1/2" to 2" too long. it's a little bit of work, but the results are great. Thank-you.
Great video. I do have some sleeves to shorten, but was not sure how to do it. Thank you.
Elizabeth Batten You’re welcome! I’m glad it was helpful!
Great work and thanks for sharing!
Thanks for posting this. I would love to see more alterations for men videos.
Hi! I’m a very green beginner! No sewing experience except a few hours. Retirement project! I’m going to try (on old shirts) and let u know

This was a terrific video! Thank you! I have not performed this alteration before and you have made it easier to understand.
Hello! If you need to take off a large amount like 3”, I find the cuff hole too large even with pleats. Can you show us how to narrow a dress shirt sleeve with a flat felled seam please?
So a stitch in time saves 9! I get it now!!!
Please do a video on how to taper a men’s dress shirts. The side seam and the back darts. Excellent video

And when I say a three button cuff. I mean snaps
PS 2.0 Also I’m not sure if I’ll see your comment and less you respond via email Wjef4ds@hotmail.com And thanks again, if you have time to respond
My dad used to wear western shirts with snaps. I’ll have to see if I can find one.
Thank you for sharing
Very nice and helpful video.
Gurpreet Singh Thank you!
SIMPLY SUPERB!!!
New to sewing and altering. Can you alter by taking in the top of the sleeve by the shoulder? Or is that harder?
Cinnamin Barry I find it harder because you may have to recut the armscye and if you make a mistake, it will be more visible on the shoulder. But if it’s something you would like to do, I would encourage you to buy a shirt from the Goodwill or use one that you don’t intend to use anymore and just practice. How to alter the shoulder side
Useful
If it's a new shirt should it be washed to shrink some or does the measurements have to account for that?
BLUE KAOS Yes, When altering new clothing, its recommended that you clean it according to the instructions on the garment care tag.
@@AngelaWoolsey thanks
thanks alot, I can use this method to shorten my workout pants, it has a zipper on the bottom. But it's a nylon material, what needle and thread should I use for it?
Bob johnson I always use 100% polyester thread because I’ve have so much trouble with cotton and poly cotton and I’d use a sharp needle or universal.
@@AngelaWoolsey can you do videos tailoring polyester stretchy athletic clothes?
Yes! I’ll add it to my list! :)
@@AngelaWoolsey thanks Angela 🥰
Thank you so much.
Awesome. How much you charge to do this?
I don’t sew for anyone anymore, but this would have been a $15 -$20 alteration. It really depends on where you live. In some areas, it might cost $10 and others, people would gladly pay $35.
